Looking for Zombie movies on DVD

a friend is a huge zombie movie freak. she loved dawn of the dead (old one and new one) and all zombie movies in general. anyways, i'm hoping to get a list of 10 or so cool zombie movies, hopefully including some more obscure older ones, and get them for a gift at some point. reccomendations?

Check out Wes Craven's <i>The Serpent & The Rainbow</i>, about <i>REAL</i> zombies.

Shriek Show just released a great version of Fulci's "Zombie (aka Zombi 2)". Great zombie flick.

Evil Dead isn't a zombie film... but it is still very good.

Here are some of my favorite zombie films:

Night of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead (original)
Day of the Dead
Night of the Zombies (Hell of the Living Dead)
ShockWaves
Burial Ground
Zombie
Night of the Living Dead '90
Return of the Living Dead
Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things
28 Days Later (not really zombies, but "infected")
Resident Evil

A cool pair of flicks in which people become zombie-like are Demons and Demons 2 (available in a 2-pack).

From that list, I really like:

Shock Waves (cool nazi aqua zombies)
Dawn of the Dead '78
The Children (eerie)
Zombie
Dead and Buried (also eerie)
The Evil Dead (a hoot)
Night of the Comet (great 80's cheese)
Day of the Dead
Re-Animator
Return of the Living Dead (more great 80's cheese)
The Stuff (a guilty pleasure)
Night of the Creeps
Evil Dead II (another hoot)
Prince of Darkness
Redneck Zombies (another guilty pleasure)
Return of the Living Dead 2
The Serpent and the Rainbow
Bride of Re-Animator
Night of the Living Dead
Dead Alive (aka Braindead)
Death Becomes Her (another hoot)
Army of Darkness (another hoot)
My Boyfriend's Back (Traci Lind... Yummy)
Return of the Living Dead 3 (good zombie flick, and it has Mindy Clarke)
Cemetery Man (just, wow)

Some others:

Biozombie (if you're in the right mood)
The Last Man on Earth (sort of plague/vampire/zombies)
...and it's remake
Omega Man
Stacy
Junk
Versus
route 666
Shaun of the Dead!!!!!

Lucio Fulci's zombie movies are my favorites like:
City of the Living Dead
The Beyond
House By The Cemetary
Zombie

another cool Zombie flick is Let Sleeping Corpses Lie, I think its a really under rated gem!

Definitely Dellamorte Dellamore aka Cemetery Man if you have a region free player and don't mind the expense. If not, write it down on a list to pick up when it gets a R1 release.

i agree that Let Sleeping Corpses Lie is very under rate. even though it doesnt get alot of love around here i really enjoyed Versus.

cheers,

jj

As I rummage through my collection, I found two more that I overlooked:

Tombs of the Blind Dead / Return of the Blind Dead.

Goldblum 09-30-04 11:33 PM

"The Last Man on Earth" with Vincent Pryce--the precurser to "Night of the Living Dead."

That's not entirely true.

Skip "Tombs of the Blind Dead" and "Return of the Blind Dead."

It's currently out of print, and commands a high price on the collector's market. Blue Underground is working on a complete set of all four movies, so we can expect uncut versions and better transfers when it comes out.

right, the only real connection between the films is that Romero has listed the novel "I am Legend" as an inspiration for NOTL. The Last Man on Earth was a loose adaptation of "I am Legend

Which looks like could be soon from Anchor Bay

Over at a live chat on the Horror Channel yesterday, Anchor Bay confirmed that they would be releasing a number of recent acquisitions on DVD sometime in the next year. Here are some of the titles that Anchor Bay rep Michael Felsher confirmed the company would be releasing:

Cemetery Man (Dellamorte Dellamore)
Freaked
Race with the Devil
Quicksilver Highway
Bad Dreams
Damnation Alley
The Entity
Trauma
Season of the Witch
Class of 1984

demonio, you beat me to it, I was just about to post a topic on it's own ;)

Cemetary Man is one I will be picking up on release day.

I recently saw Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things for the first time and LOVED it. The DVD transfer sucks though, I hear that a new print was found and may be used for a R2 release in the future.

Well, there are still a few to be found at some stores like Suncoast and Media Play. (The type of people who would be interested in these titles DON'T typically shop there so the one or two copies just sits) There's also flea markets, and pawn shops. Not to mention mom-n-pop rental places that rent them.

As for the "complete set", the 3rd and 4th films are not worth owning IMO.

----------------

"Last Man on Earth" is a great film! I have the Diamond Entertainment double-feature with "House on Haunted Hill". Not a bad disc for $5 but the print of LMoE is absolutely horrid. But for $5 it's worth having it to hold us over until a quality disc is released.

abintra 10-01-04 05:15 PM

Unfortunately R1 Dellamorte Dellamore is still another year away.
