The REALLY BIG list of limited editions
Here is a fairly comprehensive list of limited edition dvds that I made by scouring stores and online resources, although I am sure there are titles that I missed. If you know of any, please let me know. I have not included any anime titles, as I have a list of those in the forum at www.animeondvd.com . Also, I didn't include any region free or multi-region discs that originated outside of the USA or Canada. I am not sure if some box sets with exclusive content are limited or not, and some are listed, while others might be missing. For the most part, this list doesn't include titles where the only limited part is a slipcover or exclusive item (especially at Best Buy) as there are other lists showing those.
(Last updated on June 05th, 2005) Anchor Bay: Anchor Bay has a bad habit of not listing OOP titles such as limited editions, so I don't know if I am missing any of them.
Blue Underground:
Creative Design Arts: Creative Design Arts makes collector's sets of other studios' work, including Warner Bros. The sets include senitypes, posters, booklets, soundtracks, lobby cards, script books, and/or photo stills, depending on the set type (Classic, Deluxe, Gold.) I'm not sure how limited these sets are, however. A few of these sets were available as autographed sets, as well.
Cult Epics:
Disney: The original 9 limited-issue titles:
Fantoma:
Full Moon/Koch: It is hard to find information on these titles, if anyone knows of others, please let me know.
Synapse
Wild East
Misc Titles:
Music releases (Usually CD + DVD): If I search dvdpricesearch dot com for "CD" it pulls up quite a few CD/DVD combos, although I am not sure which are limited, beyond what is already listed here. Due to the way I found some of these, I am not 100% sure that some of them actually include DVDs, or are Region 1.

Halloween LE extended (with film cell, Best Buy? Exclusive) - Information on this would be appreciated Thanks for compiling such a list  |
Right off the top of my head I can think another music title that you don't have listed: Tool - Salival.
It is a collection of music videos and also includes a CD. This is one that I was always upset I didn't pick up when it was available. I will post more if I think of or find any others. |
Not sure if the following would include anything not already listed but perhaps it might be useful.
Michael's Movie Mayhem Search Results One probably could do similar search using things like DVDAf, Amazon, DVD Price Search to browse for any missing titles to include. Thanks for the list. |

Originally posted by Mountain Biker Yes, it was a Best Buy exclusive limited to 5,000 copies I believe. Thanks for compiling such a list  |
I have the 3-d cover and the limited edition film cell. The 3-D cover was available for a run and the film cell was a Best Buy only exclusive. It's the extended cut and the film cell is in a plastic holder shrink wrapped to the DVD.

Thanks for the Halloween info, Beritolam!
I made a huge update after searching Michaels Movie Mayhem and Amazon, I will try searching DVD Profiler and Guzzlefish soon to see if there is anything else I have missed. I tried searching DVD Price Search for CD, and it pulled up quite a few music CD/DVD combos, but I have no way of knowing what is limited, beyond what is already listed. |
You might want to check out www.ultimatedisney.com. I guess you could call some of the 2-Disc OOP titles like Tarzan "Limited".

thanks for the list

Re: The REALLY BIG list of limited editions
Originally posted by littlefuzzy -- Many of the Disney Animated Classics are on a rotating 10 year moratorium, and should be expected to be hard to find if they have been OOP for a while. AFAIK, most Disney titles are time limited, instead of production limited. Platinum Editions: - Beauty and the Beast - Snow White and the Seven Dwarves [does anybody know the date when 'The Lion King' will be OOP?] Boxes: [I believe all permutations of these titles are OOP now] - The Fantasia Anthology - Toy Story: The Ultimate Toy Box Misc: - Peter Pan (Special Edition) [note: you should update your list, it's not available anymore] - Sleeping Beauty (Special) - Tarzan (Ultimate Edition) - Tarzan (regular one-disc edition) Or you could just link this: http://www.ultimatedisney.com/OOP.htm Not sure when the last time they updated was, as I would've sworn that the "Ultimate Groove" edition of 'The Emporer's New Groove' was OOP. |
Great list. keep updating and i'll keep checking.

Originally posted by ThatGuamGuy Since you went to all the trouble of making the list, it oughta have the Disney stuff to; I made the effort for you: Platinum Editions: - Beauty and the Beast - Snow White and the Seven Dwarves [does anybody know the date when 'The Lion King' will be OOP?] Boxes: [I believe all permutations of these titles are OOP now] - The Fantasia Anthology - Toy Story: The Ultimate Toy Box Misc: - Peter Pan (Special Edition) [note: you should update your list, it's not available anymore] - Sleeping Beauty (Special) - Tarzan (Ultimate Edition) - Tarzan (regular one-disc edition) Or you could just link this: http://www.ultimatedisney.com/OOP.htm Not sure when the last time they updated was, as I would've sworn that the "Ultimate Groove" edition of 'The Emporer's New Groove' was OOP. What does everyone think about adding all of the OOP Disney titles? EDIT: They might be better off in the OOP thread that has been running recently, although I am not sure if the original poster was wanting to add them to his list, either. |
A few more updates have been added.
|
I think it's safe to say everything from Disney is a limited edition. ;)
Great list BTW. |
Yes, thanks for the list...hope it continues to be updated...Kudos
|
How do people like the Creative Design Arts boxsets? Are they worth it?
|
Great list...one edit though Disney is now on 7 year moratorium not 10

Criterion's "Straw Dogs" was announced as a limited edition (it even had a little silver "LIMITED EDITION" sticker on the wrapper) as they knew their licence window was brief.
Also, the Fox Studio Classics "Sunrise" was a limited edition (and says so instead of a spine number). |

I have added everything mentioned in the thread so far, with the exception of the Disney titles that are placed on moratorium.
I also tweaked the list just a bit. Please keep submitting titles that would be considered limited edition. |
No DVD has any long term value. The format will be dead within a decade as a higher resolution format takes its place.
May as well crack whatever you have open and enjoy it now. Are any laserdisc LEs still worth anything? Not really. The same will be true of DVDs. DVD isn't a very solid long term investment choice. Better to go with a no-load mutual fund. |
No one said this is about cashing them in one day, and becoming a millionaire...
DVDS go OOP all the time, and if they are labeled Limited Edition, then they will probably vanish even quicker. Even with a new format coming, there is no guarantee that many of the older titles will be re-released... People are still waiting for favorites from VHS and Laserdisc, that haven't seen the light of day on DVD. |

Very true....it's kind of sad really, as they change formats each time a few more movies will get lost along the way..I'm not getting rid of anything unitil I see it on the next format. There are at least 50 titles I want from the VHS days and I know they all wont' make it out.. It's more about the attachment to certain movies then anything. |
I have added quite a few titles, but I am running out of places to search. If anyone has any Limited Edition titles that aren't listed here, please post them.
