God No!!! MGM is now making billingual covers.

We got our copies of Walking Tall at my store yesterday and they all have those horrible, ugly (and unneccessary) billingual covers. Although they print the french in a way so it doesn't look too bad on the cover (small print), the spine looks as horrible as all billingual spines do. Looks like Columbia and Fox are the only studio's who have not given in to this annoying trend, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

Sigh.

from what i can remember, i've never seen bilingual covers in american stores..only on stuff i've ordered from canada..i know i ordered a paramount disc from a canadian retailer and it had french on it ....are you in canada?...that could explain it ..something they're only doing for canadian releases..the cover scan at dvdempire has no french whatsoever..

Isn't MGM owned by Sony now?

A few DVD Cover Art sites have pulled their MGM covers, giving fewer alternatives for those who want 100% English packaging.

The French do not want English on their covers either.

This is so stuipid. I hate double logos, specs and synopsis on packaging - it's not good composition.

Reversible covers would be the best solution.

Thank goodness there aren't many more movies coming out from MGM that I'm looking forward to.

They can go boil in their own baby oil.

This thread should probably be moooved to the covers forum.

No. The acquisition has been announced but I don't think the sale hasn't even been officially approved yet, much less gone through. You don't announce an acquisition and then send your guys over to run the company the next day. Sony has absolutely nothing to do with this.

Jackskeleton 09-25-04 04:25 PM

The sale needs to go through Federeal approval and so forth. Just because it's been announced doesn't mean that they paid in cash already. Expect the switch over to take a good while. Remember how long it took for NBC to get Universal? This cover was in the works for months now by MGM.

I realize we are wandering off topic, but did the rights for Manhunter revert back to MGM? All I can say is pick up one of the Anchor Bay releases if you haven't already. I checked DVDpricesearch and one retailer is still showing the Limited Edition 2-disc set in stock; I still see it on the occasional B&M shelf (Borders, Best Buy) as well.

The end of civilization is definitely near.

Bilingual covers don't bother me one bit. I actually think the English/French covers of my R2 Buffy sets are très cool.

Buffy Contre les Vampires.

I would like to note that the cover scan at DVD Empire is not bilingual.

Might I suggest, when you fellow Canucks are finished bitching about bilingual dvd covers you move on to bitching about bilingual cereal boxes? They're far more insidious, and they're unavoidable, mocking me with la francais as I eat my Cheerios...

You collect cereal boxes?

mcharro3 09-25-04 09:18 PM

I don't pay $20 and up for a box of cereal and then put it on a shelf for the rest of my life.

Bilingual cereal boxes only mock me for a week or two, not ETERNITY.

MGM used to make separate English and French covers, but now they've switched to the cheaper (blingual) alternative. Cheaper, yes, but they've lost me (and countless others, no doubt) as customers, so they're saving money HOW, exactly?

excandide 09-25-04 09:19 PM

Um, I work in a DVD store. We got walking tall a week ago. They DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT have billingual covers.

The CANADIAN walking tall does.

It is obvious that what you have seen are Canadian Versions. Many stores in New York get releases very early, and usually they are the Canadian versions. Mom and pop stores mostly.

MGM is not going to start releasing Billingual covers of DVDs in America. Especially not ones with French. If they ever did billingual covers in the US it would definately be English/Spanish.

This thread is now closed.

I don't think that anyone thought that MGM would. Everyone figured out that he was located in Canada, which many other forum members are.

PopcornTreeCt 09-25-04 10:10 PM

I'm in before this thread disappears.

Adrenaline 09-25-04 10:35 PM

As long as you don't order from DVD Soon or some of those other Canadian stores you shouldn't have a problem. I hate my copies of Star Trek VI CE and the Back to the Future Trilogy, they have French all over them :(

marty888 09-25-04 11:32 PM

Hmmmm ... I look at a DVD cover for two seconds. My eyes can stand any bilingual assault. I refuse to obsess about the outer wrapping when it's the damn DVD that I'm planning to spend my time with, and the reason I made the purchase.

darkside 09-26-04 01:22 AM

I'm still confused on how a single country can function well with two separate sections of the population speaking a different language.

Yes, I know people in the US speak Spanish, but English is the official language and its pretty much impossible to go very far without learning it.

Is there a logical reason why Canada won't decide to make English the official language? If less than a quarter of the population are the only ones using French as a first language then they should all be required to learn English as well to eliminate confusion.
