M-M-Max Headroom series on DVD?

Anybody heard anything about ABC's Max Headroom series coming to disc?

renaldow 09-24-04 05:26 PM

No, it's not available in any region unfortunately.

El-Kabong 09-24-04 10:43 PM

I remember chatting in another forum with someone from the company that currently holds the rights to Max. She said that they were reluctant to put the show out because they didnt think there would be enough of an audiance to justify the release. They were a small company and a dud DVD release could very well sink them.

Unfortunatly the responses in the thread - or lack thereof - were pretty much an indicator of how tepid the should would have been recieved.

I'd love it, mself. I'd pre-order a copy before the ink on the contract was dry.

I want the ABC series and the UK series released all at once in a nice box set.

I hope that whoever has the rights to it gets a great release under their belt so they feel better about putting it out. Or sell rights to Shout Factory. They would release it soon, I would imagine.

BizRodian 09-24-04 10:53 PM

Then we just need Square One :P

Wapcaplet 09-24-04 10:59 PM

This is near the top of my list of most-wanted unreleased DVDs. I would kill for a release, especially now that TechTV/G4/Whatever-they-are-this-month isn't showing it anymore.

I remember watching it a year or so ago and realizing how much ahead of its time it was.

TheV 09-26-04 04:53 AM

Doing a DVD would sink them?

I think Max H. would be a hit, depending on the set & price point. But there are a lot of people who fondly remember the show...AND it's got a look that was ahead of it's time. The company must be pretty small to be sunk over one DVD. If you own the rights to a film the costs of making a DVD is small.

Maybe they could include the Paranomia music video - or was that from the movie? Wasn't there a movie?? I couldn't find it mentioned at IMDB... :hscratch:

I can't recall there ever being a Max Headroom movie. I think I would have recalled that! I just remember the TV series, the Art of Noise single, and also a Christmas single he put out called "Santa You're One Heck of a Guy" or something like that. Actually a pretty decent song. I don't know if all rights for Max Headroom related media fall under one company, however.

I would love to see this series on DVD. All my friends loved it and we never understood why it was so low-rated when it was so kick-ass. Ah, the innocent '80s.

The "Raking" episode was one of the coolest things I had ever seen on network TV.

I'd love to have a set of this!

There was a movie, but it might have just been episodes of the TV show edited together. I remember seeing the "Max Headroom: The Movie" VHS box every week when I would go to "Movies To Go."

On IMDB there are a few references to a movie in reviews, but no real info.

Mondo Kane 09-26-04 10:59 PM

I remember the movie.
It was just a large extension of the first episode with Max's origin. Only differences is that most of the roles were played by different actors and a few cuss words were included. I believe this "movie" was the pilot for the TV series.

The character of "Blank Reg" also appeared in the movie and was later featured in future episodes on the TV show. I liked that guy!

I'd go for a Max Headroom release in a second.

haven't seen the show in forever, but i would definitely check out a dvd release...

dstrauss 09-27-04 09:48 AM

So would I. I haven't even seen VCD or SVCD releases on the newsgroups.

DrS 09-27-04 12:07 PM

Another vote for instant purchase of Max Headroom!

The cost of making the DVD, sure. But definitely not the costs of marketing and distributing it. That's where most of the cost comes in.

Slowpc 09-27-04 06:15 PM

Yea , i remember having the movie on beta a LONG time ago.... now i want it all over again! A dvd of the series would be great!

(why did we get rid of the beta machine....)

Correct. It was made for UK television rather than the U.S., hence the edgier dialogue and the mostly British cast. It should be a requisite for any potential DVD release of the series.

Who owns the rights?

I'd buy a Max Headroom set without hesitation. It's one of my favorite sci-fi shows. A nice set with all of the US episodes plus the UK pilot would be great. It would also be fun if they could add in the Max Headroom Coke commericals.

What company owns the DVD rights? I'd send the company an email asking for a box set if I had some contact info.

El-Kabong 10-04-04 02:20 PM

Thats the thing - I wish I could remember which board I saw it on. It might have been DVD Sewer - I havent been there in AGES, and this came to me quite some time ago.

I'm sorry guys - I let you down with hersay and 3rd hand accounts that I sort of remember.

TheV 10-05-04 05:37 AM

Sounds like she went to the wrong place to do her research. I'd actually wager that it could be a semi-popular release. Sure, many wouldn't know what a "Headroom" is, but anyone over 20 is a potential sale. The show was here and gone so fast, but left a big impact on many of my childhood friends, and influenced more than a few films/jokes for years after. Actually if they had the rights but were lukewarm about doing a good release I'm sure that they could license it to another company who'd do it. It's a good title for someone like Image Entertainment or Anchor Bay. Then again it's probably a good title to get a fledging distributor on the radar.
