STAR WARS SET, really cheap looking?

Anybody else feel this way?
I opened up my brand new STAR WARS box set, SOOOO excited. And everything inside the outer packaging seems, well... CHEAP. From the dvd cases, to the liner boards, the graphics on the discs themselves... it all seems CHEAP.
I don't know, maybe its just me. But they almost seem like there were just thrown together with no thought to the long lasting impression they would hold in someones collection.

PLUS, I was looking at the quality of the DVD's and my Return of the Jedi looks like it is just a poor quality disc. Its hard to describe, but when im looking at it, it just looks like it was poorly cut, I can see where the glue ran on to the inner spindle...
It just looks like CRAP! And im not usually picky about this stuff. Maybe it is just I was expecting more out of a huge release like Star Wars.

Anyone else?

Nick.

Kal-El 09-22-04 01:36 PM

Already covered here.

Adonus 09-22-04 01:37 PM

Im not talking about the packaging, Im talking about the DVD's themselves.

The graphics on the discs are great.

Josh H 09-22-04 01:40 PM

Fine with me. I love the disc art, cover art is ok as well.

Adonus 09-22-04 01:45 PM

REALLY... Man, I must have just been looking for something else. It doesnt look like the graphics were done in crayon?
Nick

Toad 09-22-04 01:45 PM

"Cheap" is not a word that came to my mind. I also don't see what people are complaining about re: the "flimsy" box. It serves its purpose for me.

Are you talking about the inserts? I think those are reproductions, or in the style of the concept paintings that were done to sell the films to Fox.

ya, the inserts, the graphics on the discs... it all seemed cheap to me. I was kinda dissappointed. Like I said before, "it must just be me. I must have been looking for something else. And didnt get what I expected." No worries... I am still stoked to have this in my collection, I was just curious if anyone else felt the same way. Apparently not! Guess Im just a crazy bastard.
Nick.

The graphics on the discs are from the original posters I believe, thus I think it's cool that they're on there.

OK, so now im concerned that I have a knock off copy. If they are copys of the original one sheet, then mine is a cheap knock off. I have the original one sheet, and it doesnt look like what is on my DVD.

I could be wrong as I haven't seen the original posters in ages, anyway, the actual art is shown in the disc below so you can see if that's what you got.

It's fuck'n artistic for fuck sake. You just don't get the deep level of meaning that those pictures represent.

MJKTool 09-22-04 02:26 PM

I dig the original poster artwork on the disks

darmok 09-22-04 02:28 PM

can't you give a decent reply without using the eff word?

Well, thank you for your in depth artistic approach that apparently I have completly overlooked. Its nice to see that you have overlooked the whole point of my post here, and gone off on your own little tyrade about how stupid someone can be with a question.
Are you one of the many art majors who crys about how nobody understands your art? How your so unappreciated? Just die already so we can all morn your loss, and truley appreciate all you have contributed to the world.

I think that the insert art (broad-brush-strokes & "abstract" feel) might have looked fine in another context, but with so much of the rest of the package looking cheap and poorly done, it really does start to feel like some stupid crayon drawings... Oh well (again...)

fumanstan 09-22-04 03:01 PM

Doesn't look/feel/appear cheap to me.

Rizor 09-22-04 03:11 PM

I'm fine with the box, but the actual keepcases themselves feel cheap to me. Mine came with these funny things near where you open them. I've heard this is the standard new case for new DVD releases, but it's really cheesy.

What he said! The DVD art looks fantastic. The abstract painting on the inserts look awesome. The keepcases are the same ones uses on many, many DVD release, and are fine. Sure, the box is sort of flimsy, but so was the Alien Quadrilogy box. Heck, my Alien Quad box has falled to pieces. Besides, I'm sure Paul Champagne will design a new metal collectors case, sooner or later.

I watch the content of the disc not the disc or the box

How do you choose which disc to watch? Close your eyes and pick randomly?

Yep, me too...I quickly opened it, threw the two halves behind my stereo (where all my other flimsy boxes are) and put the four keepcases on the shelf next to Ep. I & II. :D

Artman 09-22-04 07:17 PM

Adonus are you referring to the paper quality of the inserts? I always like a heavier cardstock for inserts and cover art myself. And yes, I hate those new cases, they look and feel cheap, but they are easily replaced.

I think I will store the box in the closet, and replace the DVD cases.

jarofclay73 09-22-04 07:36 PM

Packaging - Looks good. Feels cheap. I wish it was like the Indiana Jones Trilogy. At least the discs come in keep cases.

Keep Case Art - Bland. Tries too hard to match the art for Episode I & II. For some reason, it works for the prequels but not the OT.

Disc Art - The BEST part about the packaging. The original theatrical posters are what it's all about.

Inserts - At least we GOT inserts. Saved DVDTalk mucho bandwith with threads reading "Star Wars: No Insert = No $ale."

davidvp 09-22-04 07:50 PM

For some odd (no doubt anal) reason, the thing I noticed most about the overall SW Trilogy packaging is the lack of very many "DVD" logos.

There's a DVD logo on the front of each keepcase; but no DVD logo on any of the spines, none on the the back of each case, and none on the discs themselves. (Just like with Episodes 1 and 2 of SW.)

There are two very-hard-to-see DVD logos on either side of the slipcase packaging of the Trilogy Set; but, again, no logo on either spine of the outer case.

Most DVD releases plaster the logo all over the place -- front, back, disc, and spine. I thought the lack of the DVD logos here was kind of odd. Not a big deal, quite obviously. Just odd, IMO.

I, myself, like to see a lot of these on my DVD packages -----> http://www.discusa.com/images/gif/dvd-video.gif
I think the official DVD logo looks nice (and classy).

IMO, a http://g-images.amazon.com/images/G/...ray-medium.gif logo should always be placed on the spine of every DVD case. :)

jessebo 09-23-04 08:20 AM

at least the movies themselves are in keepcases and not crappy cardboard foldup cases. I agree they could have come up with a cool case, but it could have been alot worse..

Admiral7 09-23-04 10:02 AM

Wanting MORE DVD Logos plastered everywhere is definitely VERY anal, if not a little bit strange. A DVD Logo Fetish. Hmmmmm.

Yeah, it's just a damn shame Lucas doesn't feel that way about the movies themselves.

I mean, really, if he felt fit to digitally upgrade and change each movie, why would he use that god awful original artwork, anyway? I mean, I'm sure he'd say, sorry if you liked that artwork, but it just isn't what I wanted to do.

No, not the card stock, the cases... the art work.. I'm starting to get the feeling its just me, I guess when I think of COLLECTOR type product like Star Wars is, I just expect something REALLY special.
