My mother in law still buys foolscreen movies as well and there is no convincing her any other way. The good part is she doesn't ask to borrow any of my DVDs because they have those annoying black bars.

Anyway, I wouldn't worry about it. Widescreen is taking over with more and more people getting bigger TVs and learning the difference. I see widescreen versions of almost every movie at places like Wal-Mart and Blockbuster now so even those backward places are learning. Eventually foolscreen will go the way of the dodo and people still watching their DVDs on a 13inch TV will either have to upgrade or quit buying movies.

I can't recall the last film I wanted on DVD that was only available in a 4:3 P&S so I'm not bothered at all by this. What concerns me more is that some material is being cut to fill a 16:9 display even though the OAR is greater than or less than 1.85:1 (e.g. Kung Fu - Season 1). I expect we'll see even more of this as more people get 16:9 displays.

Ultimate full-screen adoration thread? I read the whole thing. It was two people expressing a preference for fullscreen and a bunch of pretty knowledgable people trying to educate them on the advantages of OAR.

Which part made you sick? The majority seemed to be for WS.

Most of them don't really sound ignorant to me. Most of the time it isn't that big of a deal to the casual viewer. Until they stop making Widescreen DVDs altogether though, it doesn't really bother me what other people want. Most people have watched VHS tapes for years, so it's not like Fullscreen is some kind of radical and dangerous new concept.

Did you try showing her comparison pics from her favorite movies? How did that go?

I tried everything. She claims she can't stop looking at the black bars when they are on the screen. I would say a few more choice words about the woman, but my wife looks at DVD Talk occasionaly and I would rather not start a fight over it. To say the least she is a classic mother-in-law.

As long as there's a choice to buy widescreen then I'll be happy. I guess there's no way to get through people who like foolscreen.

I came into work yesterday with the Star Wars set (just didn't want it to melt in the car) and a guy I work with noticed and asked me where I got it -- I told him and then he asked if they had a full screen version. I told him yes, in the gold box and then asked him why he would want a full screen version (especially of Star Wars at 2.35:1) when widescreen was available. His answer was that he never bought the widescreen versions because he didn't have a widescreen TV. I tried to explain the advantages (and correctness) of WS with pictures and examples to no avail. I finished by telling him that I hoped to be there in 3-5 years when he DOES own a WS TV to say "I told you so"... I even tried telling him that the studios were ripping him off with FS as he would be re-purchasing all of his DVDs in WS to match his set in a few years -- no dice!!

They want that screen filled no matter what! I don't understand the thought process and never will -- MOVIES are NOT TV!!

I don't even try to sway people anymore, they'll find out in the long run, poor bastards

I always get "I just don't like the black bars"........even when you show them pictures, these people still don't get it. Oh well.

The aversion to black bars is worse than you think.

The entertainment of the evening at my sister's a few months ago was one of the Harry Potter movies. I can't remember which. It doesn't matter.

It was the P&S version stretched to fill their widescreen TV.

My efforts to mitigate the already uncorrectible image were greeted with howls of protest. It seems that it was a "waste" of screen space to allow black bars on either side of the image.

I went into the other room & read a magazine.

I think I would have a conniption if that happened to me!

Holy crap -- cropped *and* distorted. The best of both worlds! I'd probably have to leave the room too.


I've long since given up trying to even explain widescreen to people. Although, I've noticed that a lot of people who previously "hated" widescreen have gotten used to those "black bars"... given the number of WS television shows and WS-only DVDs out there. Now it's a non-issue. For the few holdouts? It's not worth the effort.

That's Best Buy's add also. The picture on their widescreen tvs is a stretched picture of Star Wars. Really helpin to win over the consumers there. -rolleyes-

You could always play an anamorphic widescreen dvd in 16:9 mode. If they like the stretched full screen, they might like that too ;)

I prefer OAR, I could care less what anyone else chooses to view in their own home and I'm certainly not going to get worked up over it.

I love how the people who prefer "fullscreen" almost always have spelling, punctuation, and capitalization errors- great way to prove their point!
The term "Fullscreen" needs to STOP being used also- it implies you're getting the full picture; it should be labeled as "pan and scan" or "modified to fit your screen".

it doesn't annoy me when people say they prefer full screen, but when people try to convince me that it's better than OAR is when it gets silly.

otherwise, as long as there is always an option of the two, i dont mind.
