Les Miserables Superbit - Any news?

As last reported in this thread, the Superbit of Les Miserables in Concert was pulled because some dumbass put the THEATRICAL MOVIE on the disc instead of the concert. Obviously, i twas recalled before it was even released.

Is there any word on if and when it will be [re]released?

young 09-29-04 06:46 PM

i don't know... but buy.com has it coming out in december 31, 2004.

who knows? i am very interested in this as well.

Seeker 09-29-04 06:48 PM

I've almost given up on this, but I'd love a copy.

Static Cling 09-29-04 07:23 PM

I was just thinking about this the other day. I'll be snapping this up the day it gets released... IF it ever gets released.

bdshort 09-29-04 08:11 PM

Funny, I just thought about this the other day as well (as I was listening to the CD set of the concert).

young 09-29-04 08:23 PM

damn... this conversation just got me to buy the french cd set... created an account at amazon.fr... bought a couple different versions.

AdamComic2 09-29-04 08:41 PM

I gave up and bought an original copy of the DVD from a Canadian site. Got me an official R1 version and everything.

Giles 09-30-04 01:45 PM

an upcoming 2-Disc UK edition has the concert and a second disc comprised of:

° 55min documentary entitled "Stage By Stage" Featuring Interviews With Cameron Mackintosh, Alain Boublil And Claude Michel Schonberg
° Commemorative Booklet

can't seem to find any DVD specs on this but I would assume it's Dolby Digital and of course, it's in PAL.

Those sites have got to be wrong as the 31st is a FRIDAY!!!

bluesparrow 10-02-04 01:16 AM

Dammit, I read the topic and was hoping it WAS the theatrical film.

Sigh.

Shroud 10-03-04 01:13 AM

Considering that Columbia Tristar holds the rights to the movie, why don't they just release it. I watched the movie in the theater in 1998 and enjoyed it.

hondo21 10-03-04 06:15 PM

I have the original DVD. Not the best pic quality.

How was this recorded? Film? Hi-Def? Lower-rez video?

Wondering if an eventual Blu-ray version would be worthwhile.

wolverine1028 10-03-04 10:40 PM

superbit would be cool. I got mine from amazon.ca and the audio is okay but the video is not very good.

If I could get 5.1 sound and 1.78:1 anamorphic video confirmed I'd probably (a little afraid of PAL speedup on this one) get it but no site seems to have this information.

bdshort 11-25-04 01:18 AM

I just was about to buy the DVD of the concert from Amazon, thinking it it must have finally been released. Good thing I read this thread again... it's the Superbit that had the big screwup then? If the PQ on the current DVD isn't that great, I guess I'll continute waiting.

Bump from the dead

Has anyone heard ANYTHING about this? I found this on Amazon with some user pics of the case and disc. The last I heard was they mistakenly pressed the discs with the 1998 Liam Neeson version, though the discs and cases had the correct info on them. Any truth to that rumor?

Hell, at this rate, I might as well wait for the Blueray version...

shaun3000 09-28-07 02:23 AM

Ha, just saw that I'm the OP. I guess I really am the only one interested...

movielib 09-28-07 06:42 AM

I've had this one for a couple years:

http://www.dvdheaven.com/

http://www.dvdheaven.co.kr/goods_ima...70305-0113.jpghttp://www.dvdheaven.co.kr/goods_ima...70305-0114.jpg

Mine looks like it has the exact same disc but I don't have the booklet interior with all the lyrics like this one.

shaun3000 09-28-07 10:47 AM

How is the picture and sound? Is it really widescreen or did they just chop the top and bottom off?

vcuram 09-28-07 10:50 AM

Wasn't the "Superbit" series discontinued?

Not in 2004 when this thread was originally posted.

It's 16:9, OAR. Fullscreen chops off the sides. The sound is terrific.

melvin 09-29-07 09:32 AM

I believe sam goody dot com has the 2 disc dvd for around $60. I was looking for this for my g/f. When I searched and clicked on the link they showed the single disk and it was not available, but to the side they had the other version. No idea if its region 1 or not. Hope this helps some.
Edit: just checked & ordered. It's region 3

melvin 09-29-07 04:23 PM

Got my email conformation!!! If you're unsure about ordering from outside the us, this might be a good idea. $66 including tax+ shipping. Thanks for bringing the thread back from the dead! Was watching this with the g/f on PBS last week and they were giving away VHS copies with a membership.

shaun3000 09-29-07 05:01 PM

It was $26 from DVD Heaven. I'd rather take my chances with South Korea (and I'm not worried) and save $40.

Thanks for the link!

Drexl 09-29-07 05:20 PM

I may have to get that one from DVD Heaven. I'm relieved that it's NTSC because PAL speedup would really hurt this.

IMDB has this as using HDTV under the "cinematographic process" in technical specs, so a BD version may be possible. Who knows when they would get around to it though? The Region 1 edition is apparently OOP (hence why PBS had to give away VHS copies in 2007).

I completely forgot about this being PAL, anybody know if I'll have any problems playing this with my oppo 981? Many thanks!

There shouldn't be any problem playing it on any region free player on the market today as far as I know. But the 4% PAL speedup may be noticeable. That's why the Korean NTSC version is probably preferable in this case.

melvin 09-30-07 04:38 PM

Thanks for the info. I cancelled my order for now; hopefully It'll show up somewhere. A quick question, has anyone dealt with dvd heaven before(or similar sites)? I'm sure they're legit but when you go to the home page they list a bunch of CC logos above their name but when I checked the q&a they only listed paypal and bank transfers. I don't want 2 setup a paypal account for one item just a regular CC. Any hints or suggestions? Or other sites to try? Thanks again!!! -luv this site :toast:

http://www.dvdfromkorea.com/

Very close to the same price.

Both DVD Heaven and DVDfromkorea are trusted, excellent sites. I've ordered from both and never had a problem.

I notice that the DVDfromkorea info says it is full screen but I'm sure that's just a mistake. I'm sure it's the same as the one on DVD Heaven.

Sorry to bump this thread again (don't know if its frowned on) But the disc came yesterday. Unable to cancel and decided to open it -and I may have had some dumb luck; now I'm just wondering what I have... The cover is the exact same one as the 1st page but has a partial cardboard "sleeve" around the left front and right rear of case itself with japan or chinese writing on it.
Now the weird part... when I checked the specs there was no region code just a sqraue with "all" and the case says NTSC! I have no idea what this is but I figure I'll keep it (haven't opened yet its a gift). Any ideas what this is? I know I got hosed on the price- but live and learn I guess. Thanks again. -jp

shaun3000 10-13-07 01:31 AM

To clarify, South Korea uses NTSC so there's no reason for it to be PAL.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the bump.

The genuine South Korea disc is R3, not all-region. Plus the UPC on the Sam Goody page does not match either the present South Korean disc or the one I have. The price makes me think it may be Japanese (Japan is NTSC) as their prices are often ridiculous but then I'd expect it to be R2. Chinese or Hong Kong discs are probably more often all-region. Unfortunately I can't tell Japanese writing from Chinese or Korean. Perhaps someone who can could look at the picture and tell us what language it is.

http://www.samgoody.com/LES-MISERABL...VVviewprod.htm

Perhaps yours is the same as this one (unfortunately, no picture):

http://www.amazon.ca/Miserables-Conc.../dp/B000NDEXFC

Does the studio of yours match "Power International Multimedia Inc./VCI/Well" listed on Amazon Canada. Does it have Chinese subtitles as that one does?

young 10-13-07 10:13 AM

it's taiwanese. the upc code lookup shows that the manufacturer is the same - Power Intl.

i'm just enjoying my UK edition but, then again, i don't really notice/care about the PAL speedup.

shaun3000 10-16-07 09:36 PM

Came in, today. The disc is Region 3 even though the website said Region Free. :( That didn't hold me back, though! ;)

Great sound. The picture is sharp but there are glaring compression artifacts in the darker scenes. It's still better than the Region 1 disc.

Did your's come with the booklet shown in the picture on the first page of this thread?

shaun3000 10-25-07 09:34 PM

Yep

It's just like a little Golden Book. :)

The Valeyard 01-28-08 02:09 AM

Looks like BBC Video is releasing the two disc (non-Superbit - DTS) version on February 19.

http://www.amazon.com/Miserables-Ann...1507541&sr=1-2

shaun3000 01-31-08 12:30 AM

Holy crap, that's Region 1. I saw BBC and assumed it was a UK release. ABOUT DAMNED TIME!!

Drexl 01-31-08 07:16 AM

Well, that probably explains why it was OOP - BBC/Warner has the rights now. Come on, announce it for BD! :)
