does anyone here own this dvd? im thinking about buying it i used to love the show on abc and fox then i recently saw it on comedy central so im thinking about buying it. is it worth it and how are the special features?

The review is dead on. This is a great set loaded with everything you could ask for except John on the commentaries since he wasn't available. One of my favorite TV box sets.

I agree, it's a great set. It's a bit baffling that the outside of the box doesn't list the special features, since it's got a good amount of them. I haven't listened to all the commentaries,but I liked the ones I've heard. It's too bad Al Jean and Mike Reiss didn't do commentaries for their episodes of SLEDGE HAMMER! on that DVD set.

Was he too busy not being in showbiz anymore?

Ouch! I've not been a fan of him since he took down Newsradio (not that it is entirely his fault), but that is harsh, albeit funny. :-)

Very funny show, one of my favorites too. Although, I had a hard time finding a good deal on it.

It's not worth owning. I bought it ebcause it was nostaglic to me, it amazed me as a kid and the little movie paraodies were hilarious. I bought it a few months ago and watched it and was a bit let down. It's not as funny as I remember. It's two seasons on four discs. The first season is really funny (for 1994) but the second season, it's stories, are irritating. There's this southern belle main character as Jay's love interest and her accent is beyond irritating. There's a pointless clips episode. Some dumb typical storylines like Alice's attention-loving sister is in town and tries to steal Jay and her sisters glory. It's annoying. I like comedians like Will Ferrell, not Jon Lovitz so that might have something to do with it too.Just buy Family Guy if you want that kind of humour, or wait for future season sets of The Simpsons. Or hey I'll just give you my Critic set.

I picked this one up and was pretty surprised with some of the offensive (for the time) humor it featured. The set is definitely worth owning, but it costs a pretty penny (I picked mine up for half price previously owned)... so be wary unless you're really a fan... but if you're a geek with a penchant for movies, you'll love this satirical animated series that was ousted long before it should have been.

I think I paid $23 from DeepDiscount. Definitely worth it. This was one of my favorite shows the short time it was on. The 'webisodes' are an interesting addition, but really, the are too short to too much of a storyline...

Wow. Good thing this is the kind of thread where diatribe like that can be given the alibi of being someone's opinion, and therefore be fairly well excused.

Counterpoint:

This was a great show, and is a great addition to any collection. John Lovitz is, and always has been, hilarious, and I can't imagine anyone else doing the part of Jay Sherman. People like Will Farrell, who I will admit I do find funny, make their living out of acting like morons, and get such acting roles accordingly. Comparing this show to The Family Guy, if I understood that to be the quoted author's intention, is utterly ridiculous. Since the creators of The Critic were trying a slightly more cerebral humor with this show, it's obvious why the show didn't catch on more than it did: people like myself who truly understood and appreciated it were, unfortunately, in the minority.

I too have thought about buying this DVD Set, but does it have English subs, or English CC?
English is not my first language, so it's sometimes hard to hear names and certain words.

The_Infedel, do not criticze my opinion and call it "diatribe", especially when your opinion is PURE DORKISH DIATRIBE. The Critic and Family Guy are amazingly similar. Funny how you notice the small differences more when that's all you spend your free time doing. Sad. I'm here to talk when you're ready, big guy.

Yes.

I own both The Critic and Family Guy and love them both. If you love movies, you'll appreciate The Critic.

I bought it a few weeks ago, it was alright, I remembered watching it as a kid, but had forgot allot. While watching it I couldn't help but think that this may have worked better as a live action show rather then a cartoon. The southren girl was a pretty weak character, they should have focused more on the father, because he was frikin funny. I found the picture was alittle grainy, and it wasn't consitant as far as colours go between episodes.

I love this show and the dvd set is awesome - has just about eveything a fan could want. The humor isn't as random or off-the-wall as The Family Guy, but they are kind of similar. I think The Critic has a little more heart. The Siskel and Ebert episode is a classic example.

Personally I did actually see similarities between Family Guy and The Critic... especially with the tangents that the two shows can go on from time to time.

Originally the series was intended as live action, but John Lovitz wouldn't do a TV series, but was agreeable to a cartoon. Another problem with live action was the film parodies, they would be too expensive in live action.

im probley picking it up this weekend and that would be so cool to see critic live action.

i've got the set and I love it....terrific show
