I wish Futurama was getting a Season 5. I watch very little TV these days, and Futurama was one of the few series that I could really get excited about watching. Not only that, but it was steadily improving from season to season. The first season was good, the second season was good speckled with moments of brilliance, the third season was brillance speckled with moments of good, and the fourth season...well I'm not going to say it was perfect, but it was getting closer. I wonder what a 5th Season could have been like.

But on the other hand, there's something poetic about going out while you're still on top. 72 episodes isn't a bad run, and we've got the DVDs now to remember the good times with. I don't know about anyone else, but I can watch these same 72 episodes over and over again and they just keep getting funnier and funnier. I've been re-watching in order the over the past week, and me and my friend were literally in tears over the "Roswell that Ends Well" episode. When the Professor says "Oh yes, let's all take tips on not messing up history from Mr. 'I'm My Own Grandpa'. Screw the past! Let's get the hell out of here", I lost all control, even though I've seen that episode at least twice. So, if the series had to end after four seasons, well I guess I'm okay with that. Besides, if it had gone on any longer, it might have hurt it's chances of being considered a cult classic. ;)

I miss this show because

a) its able to reuse some of the better Simpsons jokes in a different setting - almost like a satire of the Simpsons in ways

and

b) because it was damn funny. I hope to hell Fox decides to redo this when Family Guy becomes a huge success when it starts airing again...

So why promote a show that they don't fully control? The time slot was awful when football season came about and the lack of promoting it was sad. But futurama was set up to fail sadly. King of the hill doesn't bring in the best ratings, but for it's cost, it works in it's timeslot.
Fox never gave Futurama a shot. They purposefully didn't give the show a decent time slot, and the stories of the disputes between Groening and Fox are legendary.

BTW, in an EW piece a week or so ago, Groening said they barely scratched the surface with Futurama and didn't have the chance to develop characters. He hinted that there may be life in the show yet.

Here is the whole EW piece:

A future for ''Futurama''? -- Matt Groening speculates on his canceled series by Josh Wolk

With the brilliant, unjustly canceled Futurama's last 18 episodes now out on DVD (Unrated, 6 hrs., 54 mins., 2002-03, Fox), we asked creator Matt Groening to reflect on the funniest show of the 31st century.

When did you realize that Fox wouldn't make Futurama the next Simpsons? We had the guillotine hanging over our heads before the show even went on the air. Fox's executives never understood the show, and I wasn't able to explain it to them to their satisfaction.

Any chance of a Family Guy-like resuscitation? Our Adult Swim rerun ratings are fantastic, and [codeveloper] David X. Cohen and I are throwing around ideas of how to keep it alive. It's a very ambitious and expensive show, which has been a sticking point.

Do you have unfinished business?

All science-fiction epics have an underlying theme that things are not what they seem, and we haven't revealed all of the secrets embedded in the show. We even have characters we created at the beginning of the series that we haven't gotten around to introducing yet!

I'll go with a movie or something but i dont think i want a return show to FOX.

Its a funny show that is a cult classic and will forever remain that way.

p.s. i still hate FOX.
