Pixote?

Any news of this one coming back into print??

FilmFanSea 09-12-04 11:40 PM

New Yorker released the OOP disc (and then Facets seemed to have it for a while). Since none of the major studios were involved in the production or distribution of this film, I have to believe that the rights have been purchased by another independent.

I suspect that the same company also has the rights to Hector Babenco's so-far-unreleased other major film*, Kiss of the Spider Woman (Polygram once controlled the rights & released it on VHS--those rights may have passed to MGM), and plans to release them in tandem. Likely suspects would include Criterion, Wellspring, and Koch Lorber, but I haven't heard any rumors.

A re-release should obviously be a double-disc set which will also include José Joffily's Who Killed Pixote?.

I realize this is all speculation, but it's the best I've got ....

* no slight is intended towards Ironweed.

For those that want it, Ironweed is available in Denmark as 'Jern Urt'.

The Pixote DVD I had (bought in Canada I think) had a terrible transfer.

So we'll leave this one at "someday." Maybe when Carandiru hits DVD this one will come out too.

I passed on the previous release based on the universally negative comments on the transfer quality, and will have to hang on to my VHS release until someone finally does justice to this title.

Kiss of the Spider Woman

Checking at the official Kiss of the Spider Woman web site, I received the following e-mail response:

Thanx for your interest. As you know, Kiss of the Spider Woman has never
been released anywhere on DVD. A 20th anniversary special edition 2-disc
gift-set, with two full-length feature documentaries, is being completed for
Region 1 release next year. Please let me know if you have any further
questions.
Cheers
David Weisman
