Yeah, I usually check on DVD Planet's site for the release dates.

Last two reviews should give you a good idea as to the controversial character of the film.

Here it is, from Criterion's official site:
http://www.criterionco.com/asp/release.asp?id=259
I saw it listed somewhere else as coming from Image, but that's probably incorrect.

Pretty thin on features.

Personally, À ma soeur left me cold, especially the big deus ex machina at the end. And the shock scenes didn't shock me that much.

Indeed-- just a "making of" featurette, it seems. The essay and interview (translated from French, at that!) should not disappoint, as Criterion reproduces some good essays-- for the most part. Still, more DVD extras would be appreciated. *sigh* Whenever they tag that "more" at the end it usually translates to "not much else."

How can a title be "Fat Girl" in the US and then "For My Sister" somewhere else.

Kinda like calling Gibson's movie "Passion Of The Christ" in the US and then naming it "A Really Shitty Day" in Europe.

It's not really that uncommon. For example, one of my favorite movies (directed by Wenders, of course) is Im Lauf der Zeit, which translates roughly into "In the Course of Time") (the British release title). Here in the US, the film is known as "Kings of the Road", since the characters sing an impromptu version of that song.

I think Breillat used Fat Girl as a working title. The film is actually called that on the making-of documentary that comes with the French DVD.

Speaking about titles, Spanish ones are very imaginative. See if you can guess any of these:

Things You Don't Forget

Two Men, One Destiny

The Devil's Seed

Centaurs of the Desert

Very interesting insight on the translation of film titles. Often film title translations have more to do with cultural translations, or, worse, marketing purposes, as it does with literal meanings. Hence the poor fate of the translation of À ma soeur, which literally means "To My Sister." If you think about it in context with the movie, the French title has more depth than the superficial English title. Funny how superficially the film is often received. The title certainly does not help.

I think there's another interpretation regarding the ending scene. This was pointed out by my girlfriend as we were leaving the theater a little stunned.

She pointed out that there were two male characters in the film. the first one seduces a sister, and leaves the family in ruins.

The second one does the same thing - only like a sledgehammer.

There is nuance and interpretation to this film.

Whatever it is - it is not uninteresting... at least to me.
