Just watched for the Argento cut for the first time, It was cool for the extra Goblin music, but I still like the theatrical cut best. There were a few scenes cut from the Argento version that I was REALLY surprised he cut:

1. The helicopter/zombie head scene (one of my favorite SPFX scenes of all time, next to Zombie vs. Shark in Zombi 2). What, did he think it was goofy or something?

2. When they're blocking the mall entrances with trucks, he cuts the explanation and the first truck... in the other versions, it's after they park the first truck that Roger starts getting cocky and crazy... in Argento's cut he starts off cocky and crazy, and you wonder what made him that way...

Case material?

Sorry if this has been asked and answered, but what is the outer case made of? Is it cardboard, plastic or other?

Thank you in advance.

its made from card, not very strong card, but it should hold up to the wear and tear of playing all 4 dvds over and over again

And the Nipple, well you could see it clear in my old VHS from years ago and on many dvds from around the world, the UK cannes cut of it out years ago I could see it very clearly indeed, even Tom Savini on the UK dvds commentary commented on it, he said the quality of the print wasnt good enuff on some vids.

You can find our full, detailed review of this new 4-disc Ultimate Edition here.

Snippet:
2004 has proved to be the year of the zombie with the likes of Shaun Of The Dead (which Romero reputedly quite likes) and the remake of Dawn, itself. Even Lucio Fulci’s infamous Zombie 2 (Zombie Flesheaters in the UK) has been re-issued with class and bursting with extras. But, if zombies are truly back on the map, then George Romero is holding the compass and only he can steer them forward. Let’s pray for Land Of The Dead without studio interference (in fact let’s pray that he reverts to the oft-mooted title of Twilight Of The Dead, as well).

Dawn is the greatest zombie movie ever made. No question. Truly epic in scale, brilliantly written, directed and acted, whether you view it as satire or gorefest. And another weird thing about it is, just like outrageous comedian Billy Connelly, it appeals to almost anyone, despite appearing to push the boundaries of taste.

Thanks. Wonder why he changed it? And I agree that the actors' commentary should have been on the extended cut.

What an excellent, comprehensive set. I bought it on Tuesday and really just finished looking at it tonight. The extensive poster, still, and video box galleries were a very fun touch.

i bought the divimax when it came out but it would skip and freeze after
Spoiler:
the truck scene when they brought in the guy that got bit
. it would skip throughout that entire chapter. i exchanged it 3 times and then decided it was some type of imcompatabilty issue with my toshiba 4800 and just ended up returning it knowing that a better set was in the near future. is the US cut the same exact disc that was in the divimax? is anyone that had problems with the divimax having problems in the same spot in the new set? KTIK mentioned it earlier in this thread but it could just be him.

I have a 4800 and never had a problem with the DiviMax version. Maybe you found a bad batch? Weird...

Huh, that's interesting--my copy of the Divamz version does the exact same thing on my Apex player, which normally will play literally anything with no problems. I thought I had a bad disc too. Maybe it was a bad batch. Don't have the UE yet, but I'd also be interested to know if it skips as well.

My copy of the Divimax did that too on my Toshiba, had to watch the mvoie on my computer. But my player is really dirty and screws up on a lot of discs.

I'd never seen Document of the Dead and was really looking forward to seeing it, but the dry lecture-analysis tone of it really put me off. The newer one was much more enjoyable. I couldn't believe how old Flyboy looked compared to Ken Foree. Does he have a painting of himself in the attic or something?

The most fascinating thing to me was finally seeing Argento's cut, which I thought was terrible. Amazing that extending shots by a beat or two, adding a few lines here and dropping others completely changes the rythem of the film. I also disliked his music choices. The attack on the projects always seemed like a horrifying scene to me (innocent people being slaughtered by a deranged SWAT guy), and the Argento music plays it up as an action scene.

Terrific set. Happy to put it on my shelf and know I will never have to buy this, my favorite movie again, until the next format change.

I just picked this up at BB, and can't be happier, I'm more of a fan of Night of a Living Dead, but this is a great addition, and presentation, no doubting that..

I haven't worked through all 3 versions yet, but look foward to it..

Hi everybody!

I bought the set, but I've never seen the movie. Which version should I watch first?

I would suggest the theatrical first, so you have a good basis to compare the others too. However, you really can't lose with any of them. Enjoy.

Hey T-800... welcome to the forum!

I'll agree with onebyone. IMO, it's usually best to start with the theatrical version.

I watched the US Theatrical cut last night and absolutely loved it! I hadn't seen it in several years and this DVD makes it look and sound the best its ever been.

I'm listening to the commentary now. Does anyone know if it was recorded exclusively for this DVD or was it ported over from a previous disc?

I watched the European (Zombie) cut of the film last night.

I felt that the flow of both the Euro cut and US Theatrical cut was a tie. The Euro cut some scenes, while extending other sequences. Some worked in its advantage while others did not. I did enjoy the additional Goblin musical score, when compared to the US version. However, I felt that the editing in this version was sub-par when compared to the US version.

So which version do I favor? Slight advantage to the US Theatrical version.

I hope to watch the US Extended version over the weekend.

I'm going through the Euro cut now. So far, I like the pacing of the film... very Euro. But I miss some of the Goblin music that is in the US cut.... in particular, the opening scene. I like the added scenes, like the first struggle with the female zombie, the pause in the tenement building with the boarded up doorway, Steven at the police dock...

...the jury is still out.

These are two scenes that were welcomed on my part. Especially the pause at te boarded up doorway. It adds tension to the scene and makes it plausible. Without a pause, the scene doesn't work well.

However, the Euro cut of the film shortens the scene of Flyboy going from the elevator to the safe room by a couple minutes, which hurts the flow.

Per DVD Compare, it has everything but the Two Evil Eyes featurette.

After all these years, this is still my favorite set that has been made. Be nice if they made a blu ray set of it.

On DVD compare I see that the UK version had the Document of the Dead commentary but it is not listed on the US version. Can anyone with the US version confirm if it is on there?

I am currently about 10 hours away from my copy and need to know if I should keep the individual version wrapped for reselling or enjoy.

Oops, your right, I think I accidentally looked at the UK four-disc instead of the US UE. So yea, the UE only has the documentary, none of the features
