Nice recommendation let's not forget Bible Black and La Blue Girl.

I also find myself venturing into anime. I have owned Akira for a long time, I added Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away and of course The Animatrix and Final Fantasy: Spirits Within (if that is considered anime).

I plan to add Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D and Ghost in the Shell to my collection and go from there. I am probably a more mainstream person even in anime but they are expensive so I want to stick with well known stuff at first.

I also have Tekken and Street Fighter II: The animated movie on VHS which I enjoyed.

Hmm, try some of these movies:

-Grave of the Fireflies-
-My Neighbor Totoro-
-Ghost in the Shell-
-Spirited Away-
-Akira-

They are great, and "most" people like them, so it's good first time anime IMHO.

I recommend finding a local video store that rents anime or getting a NetFlix subscription. Maybe I'm just picky, but I've always thought the hit-to-miss ratio for anime is really bad. Plus, anime DVDs ain't cheap, so they're not something you want to blind-buy that often.

Add Cowboy Bebop to that list, it's definitely a fan favorite.

You can't go wrong with Hayao Miyazaki, the man is a legend.

Spirited Away
Princess Mononoke
Castle in the Sky

I was wondering about this as well. I saw some Anime years ago and I found it a bit boring. But I'm willing to give it another go.
