Is the star wars trilogy a good start for someone that never watched star wars?

This thread just proves that even with Rivero suspended, you can't keep crappers away in ANY Star Wars thread.
Anyway, yes, ignore the negativity and watch the OT. Just sit back and enjoy!

Get the proper introduction, the proper buildup to the whammy, said whammy, the explanation, then the wrapup.

I'd start with Episodes IV-VI (pre-Special Edition) first, otherwise the impact for this trilogy won't be the same. If you see the prequels first, it inevitably gives away some good spoilers from the classic trilogy. And having all the movies at your conveniece also takes away some of the drama. For those of us who saw Empire in 1980, we had to deal with a movie that ended in an unsatisfying way, a cliffhanger. We had to wait three years to find out its resolution.
After Episode VI, you can just go back to the prequels to see how it really began.

I liked the way Empire ended. It was the dark episode of the original trilogy and it ended on an appropriately somber note.
Opatlion, you sound like a friend of mine. He says he's never seen any of the Star Wars films, either.
I'll buy the set, but I've only seen the films about a hundred gazillion times each.

It sounds to me like most everyone here that say to start with the OT is assuming that the changes on the upcoming set keep the point of seeing that way. I don't know every one of the changes that were made but isn't it possible the Lucas has made all of these changes so that the proper viewing order would be 1 through 6 and not 4,5,6 and then 1,2,3?

I'm from the "South of Dayton" area, welcome.
I don't think Lucas ever "envisioned" that sequence or he would have released them like that. That may be how he wants those to view them now, but I don't recall him ever stating that and doubt that he really cares.
He is claiming changes, are to make all of the films fit together (and for the "most part" that is what he did - don't flame if you don't think so).
1-6 is the order, but many might be bored with that order, and would need to wait for 3.
If OP is looking to watch now... I kinda like the 4, 5, 1, 2, 6 order that was mentioned earler. Story is involved, story background is given, story resolution revealed, watch EP3 in theater hoping for some good stuff!

it stirred my imagination for 3 yrs.
what really started to kill my love for the series was Return of The Jedi- i found that a very unsatisfying resolution after the build up and three yr wait.
but i think new viewers, like the original poster here, are never going to have as extremely adverse a reaction to Jedi as some of us from the original generation did, just because there is no wait- hence, there is no anticipation to build up (and let down).

Lucas must need quick money.
