Problems With Kino's METROPOLIS?
Has anyone had any problems playing the KINO edition of the silent film, METROPOLIS? I know when this was released it got rave reviews, but I've heard from two trusted sources that the disc will not play after Chapter 23, which is exactly where the layer changes. Anybody else have this problem? Thanks!

I have not had that problem anytime I've played it, maybe a "bad batch" got out.
|
Mine played fine - tho I got it when it first came out.
|
Never heard of that problem or experienced it with my copy of Metropolis.
|
No problem here -and this is the first I've heard this mentioned.
|
It may just be a player issue. Sometimes certain players just don't seem to like certain discs.
|
Maybe try the problem disc in another friend's player to see if you get the same kind of response. I've been surprised before what some players will play and others don't.

Actually, we watched the film in class last year and the film did refuse to play after chapter 23, and the extras didn't work at all. So it's probably not just your copy. Write to Kino and ask for a replacement.

No problems with my disc.
I actually have two DVD players connected to my system. Each made by a different manufacturer. If one of my player has a problem with a DVD, I pop it into the other and vice versa. The reason I have two is one is a region free player. |

My copy played fine. It has been awhile since I've watched it.

Here's the official word from KINO:
We recently suffered a defective batch of METROPOLIS discs. It sounds as if you've had the bad luck to receive two copies. As you purchased this DVD from Borders Books, you should contact them for a replacement or refund. We regret the inconvenience. -- N. Mulligan, Consumer Video Sales http://www.kino.com/ |
Mystery solved. Only problem with exchanging it at Borders would be how to identify a defective DVD from a good one without having to open and play it. May not be too fun if there stock is full of defective discs. Seems at least Kino could step up and offer a known good disc directly in exchange.

Laser, I completely agree and feel that KINO dropped the ball on this one. I have not seen a copy of METROPOLIS at any Borders store for months, so they will have to special order it, then I'll have to check it and make sure it's not from the same bad batch and it's all a hassle that KINO could prevent simply by offering to replace the defective copy. I realize they are a niche video company and not a big studio, but elementary customer service should not be too much to ask.

bad batches suck. I pulled out my copy and it suffers no problems. this is from the first batch and I grabbed it on release day.

I had the same probleme with my copy of INTACTO last year: the extras wouldn't play. The issuing company told me to deal with it at the store, but every copy they had was messed up. I ended up keeping it, at least the film plays.

My disc has worked fine on the dozens of times I've watched it. :)
