You know what's sad? I never even knew anything about this film at all. Heard of it but never knew ANYTHING about it. Just read up on it. Now I can say....

HOLY SH!T! Definitely picking this one up. :)

Hate to say it, but as much as I want Raging Bull, the rest of this set sucks.

Cameron 09-02-04 04:06 PM

It definitely doesn't "suck", poor choice of words, but I certainly don't care for New York or Boxcar, so the set as a whole is not worth for me & I'm sure others. The Last Waltz however is great.

I already have Last Waltz, I don't care for Boxcar and I'm on the fence w/ New York. So no box for me, just Raging Bull and maybe NY.

I can't wait for Raging Bull, though!!!

Boxcar Bertha isn't your usual Scorsese. I didn't care for it. It's very Robert Altman. Which isn't a bad thing but not when you're expecting Scorsese.

I did kinda like New York, New York. De Niro is very good in a role you usually wouldn't see him in.

Saxon

As per MGM's policy, the 1.66:1 transfer for New York, New York is non-anamorphic.

:sigh:

Why doesn't MGM do anamorphic transfers on 1.66:1 films? The recent SE of The Manchurian Candidate was a precisely sized 1.75:1 anamorphic transfer that was oh-so-slightly windowboxed in the 1.78:1 16x9 frame. Why not windowbox an anamorphic 1.66:1 image? A large number of sets would lose the side black bars to overscan, those that wouldn't would have owners who probably know what was going on and wouldn't complain.

Well, The Last Waltz is good (but not great), but I've seen the other two and thought they were pretty damn bad.
So it's not worth picking up this boxset for two films.

The only one I had was the old Raging Bull, and that just went for $19 on eBay, so I think I'll get the boxed set (all blind except for Last Waltz which I liked). Scorsese is a director I've been getting into alot more recently (Read: not just watching Goodfellas and Gangs of New York or something lame like that), so I am looking forward to checking out Boxcar, even if it's a letdown.

slop101 09-03-04 04:42 PM

After seeing Boxcar Bertha, John Cassavetes said to Scorsese, "You just spent a year of your life making a piece of shit. What're you going to do now?"

So Scorsese went off and made Mean Streets.

layth1 09-03-04 04:52 PM

I actually liked Boxcar Bertha (so I'll probably by that with of course raging bull). However, I'm not intrested at all in The Last Waltz or New York, New York.

Gil Jawetz 09-17-04 09:23 AM

Choices choices. Raging Bull and NY NY are no brainers. But I already have Last Waltz (beautiful movie, btw) and haven't seen Boxcar. I'm not a completist but might get the set and sell Last Waltz...
