Anybody have the "Returner" DVD?
Saw a trailer for this movie on Steven Seagal's "Belly of the Beast" DVD and it looked damn cool. Had a bit of a Battlefied Earth/Matrix/Time Cop/Equilibrium kind of look to it. It's one of those live-action Japanese anime/sci-fi films.
I saw that the disc only runs about $13 on DDD. And I was wondering what the specs are, 16:9 WS or 5.1? |
I have it, and yeah, it was definitely a Terminator/Matrix/Transformers sorta feeling movie. It wasn't quite as cool as the trailers/box art/description made it seem, but I did enjoy it a lot. I don't remember the specs, off the top of my head (not at home to check), but according to the listing from my DVDProfiler list, it was anamorphic 1.85:1. with 5.1 on all the tracks (English, Japanese, French), assuming this is all correct.

If you have a hollywood video near by you can probably find it PVD for <$10, maybe even $6.99 with their new pricing tiers that started this week. That's where I got mine. I'm reasonably sure the DVDprofiler specs are correct, additionally the dub has the exact same surround and LFE sound levels as the Japanese. The best eye candy in the movie was all in the preview, but it was still reasonably entertaining.
Another film that was released at about the same time is "So Close" the Hong Kong girls-with-guns flick. They aren't linked in any real fashion, just both asian, action flicks with US domestic releases at about the same time and same pricing & availability from Hollywood Video. I think Returner's preview was also on the So Close DVD. So Close has higher production values and I found it more entertaining. |
Best Buy was selling it for 19.99 but I found it at my Flea Market for 2.00 durning the summer. I'm sure you can get it used for $10 if you look. I also liked the movie.

I had bought this movie (for $10 used at a BBV), but later traded it in. It was definitely worth a rental, but not a keeper IMHO. A few cool bits, but, ultimately, a bit silly.

The Hong Kong Returner DVD has a DTS track, anamorphic print and subtitled interviews. The best version is the expensive Japanese set, though. Two disks full of stuff.

I have the 2 disc Limited Edition Region 2 set and love it. great movie in my opinion.

I have the HK Region 3 release (on Universe) - excellent presentation of a fun movie.

It was a good movie, rented it, liked it. Dont know if I would buy it though. Maybe if it was $6.99 but thats about it. Worth seeing at least once.

The Region 3 version from CD-WOW was around $7US shipped a month ago. I've also seen it in numerous BBVs and HWVs. It's a very cool movie.

I rented The Returner and really enjoyed it; would like to view it again, in fact. Going to have to find a copy of So Close , but I doubt the local video stores will have that one.
BTW, I've really enjoyed the Asian films I've viewed lately. Just watched Ringu last night and found it creepy, though I've already seen The Ring and hence new what to expect in some ways. |
I have it,it's a pretty cool movie.Might have to watch it again now that you bring it up :)
