Looks like they're dropping the Pauline Kael "I hate this movie" commentary from the laserdisc.

Some more information regarding Short Cuts (and thanks to a member of the Criterion Forum for pointing this out)...apparently, the "reprint of Short Cuts, the Vintage Books companion collection of Raymond Carver short stories " mentioned in the specs refers to an actual book, of course, and is no less than 160 pages in length...indicating that the Short Cuts set won't be the typical thick keepcase usually associated with Criterion double discers.

The Criterion boxart for Short Cuts, by the way, greatly resembles the art for the book.

I think the Short Cuts release may be the best DVD dvd release of the year. I'm still hyped for the Battle of Algiers but after reading this, wow. Criterion's best year by far.

About stinkin' time! Don't know what I'll do with another book of short stories by Carver, but it's cool it's coming with the DVD.

Is there an actual date on this? Might have missed it, but didn't see one.

has anyone here both seen the movie and read most of carver's books? if so, am i just being paranoid? just wondering. thanks!
I saw the movie back when it came out and also have read all (or most of) the short stories the movie's based on -- in addition to other Carver stories. In my opinion, the stories are far superior to the movie. If I were you, I'd just watch the movie with an open mind and not try to compare what you're watching to Carver's stories. You'll just be more disappointed than you need to be.

As a student of both Altman's and Carver's, I'm of the opinion that both the film "Short Cuts" and the collected Carver stories that the film is based upon are absolutely essential. "Short Cuts" is one of Altmans' best, and one of the 90's best American films... and Carver is, well, one of the key 20th century fiction writers...

Basically what Walter Neff said. It shouldn't ruin Carver for you, some of his best stuff isn't even in the movie if I remember correctly. Just watch it and enjoy the interpretation of his works, it's worth the watch.

Oh, baby. I've been waiting years to watch Julianne Moore roll out the red carpet in digital glory.

I just hope that they carry over the commentaries from the LD edition. Are there any Criterion DVDs where they didn't carry over the LD commentaries?
