Goodfellas:SE somewhat rant(possible spoiler)
Hey all. Im sorry to start another Goodfellas thread but I just wanted to say that, as beautiful as the new SE was, I found several problems with it.
1.The sound. Did anyone else notice that any gunshot sounded awfully muffled? Im not sure if they did this on purpose or if it is my surround sound setup. 2.During the scene where Paulie is telling Henry he has to go back to his wife I noticed a big huge matte line(I believe thats what it was) right down the middle of the screen. Anyone else notice this. Now if I remember correctly, the matte line was there in he previous DVD as well. Im unsure of whether or not the sound was muffled on the previous DVD(can't remember). As I said previously it is a beautiful DVD but just these minor things really bugged me. Any thoughts ? |
At least you have it to watch. I received my copy from Amazon just to discover it contained 2 copies of Disc 2 and no Disc 1. I put in for a refund and went to Tower to buy a new one (adding several bucks to the original price tag). I got the last copy on the shelf, took it home and suprise - Disc 1 was cracked in half! Now Tower says because it was opened and they don't have another copy in stock, I have to special order it and wait 3 more weeks!
|
sorry dude. That sucks.
|
Yeah, probably when I finally do receive it, I'll find out that you're right and the transfer has problems!
|
I wouldnt say the transfer has problems. The trasnfer is quite good with just some minor flaws. I guess this is just how DVD is nowadays.
|
hey joliom, the same thing happend to me. Amazon was quick to replace it for free, though.

Originally posted by TboyTN Yes, I also noticed this big line down the middle of the screen during that scene....Seems like something as obvious as this could have been cleaned up. Yes I agree, especially since I seem to remember it being on the last DVD also. Oh well. |

The scratch jumped out at me as well. It's still a great disc, the scratch only lasted a few seconds and overall the rest of it looked great. It is dissapointing that it wasn't corrected though. When a studio double dips on a title like this (bona fide classic, potential huge seller, directed by a legendary auteur, and less than twenty years old) I really feel like they have an obligation to get the picture quality close to perfect.
|
The big line during the Paulie/Henry/Jimmy scene stood out, as did big flecks of black on the screen when Henry and his wife go shopping toward the end of the picture (during the long coke/sauce/guns/helicopter segment).
I didn't have any problems with the audio though...I thought it sounded great. As noted, the video glitches were apparant on all previous copies, including the laserdisc to my recollection. My guess is it's a flaw in the master - meaning ALL prints of the movie are like this. But yeah, they could have spent some money to digitally remove it if they wanted. |
I sold mine the other day for various reasons...mainly I was never gonna watch it again and Im sick of gangster movies...anyhoo...I absolutely hated the mix on this DVD...it was good until Henry's voiceover popped in...and its so loud and overbearing that I had to turn it down...and then when he's not talkin...which is rare...the dialogue and sound effects and music are so much lower than the voice over that I'd have to turn it up..then the voiceover would come and down the volume would go..! AHHH!!! CRAPPY SOUND MIX!
|
The voiceover and dialogue played out pretty well on my system, no volume adjustment needed
|
Got the big ass line on mine as well, but didn't notice any problems with the sound.
Has anyone watched it with Scorsese commentary? Just wondering if he mentions the big ass line...maybe it was intentional (though I doubt it). |

Re: Re: Goodfellas:SE somewhat rant(possible spoiler)
Originally posted by Mr. Salty It's not a matte line, it's a scratch on the original camera negative and has been present on all versions of this movie, including the theatrical release, VHS and Laserdisc. Originally posted by lordzeppelin In this day and age, they could have cleaned it up digitally fairly easy. And added Jar-Jar Binks to the scene at the same time. Ask Lucas! LOL |
yousa thinka me funny?
meesa funny how? meesa like clownin to yousa? How is meesa so f'n funny? |
That's the same way the mix that was on the last release and in theaters IIRC. |

Originally posted by Mr. Salty In a thread at HTF, film restorationist Robert A. Harris said that a scratch like that is very difficult, time consuming and expensive to remove. Time Consuming? The DVD medium hit the market in what, 1997? They had seven years to release this special edition. Expensive? Again we're talking about Warner Bros. and given the enormous popularity of this film, I'm sure that they'll easily recoup the investment that they put into restoring this film. Not trying to jump on you for passing on the info Mr. Salty, but this should have been corrected. If Criterion can extensively repair underappreciated art house films then Warner can certainly do the same with one of the biggest titles in their catalogue. |
Maybe warner figured that since everyone wants to see the flick in it's OAR, that they'd also want to see it in it's OSN version as well (original scratched negative)... so you're getting exactly what you got in theatres! While it's slightly annoying, it's short and barely noticable.... I'm just glad to have a great edition of one of my favourite movies.

Here's the thread on this from HTF; it kind of degenerates after a bit, but has a lot of info until then:
