I would have to agree with this. I bet he owns most of the IMDB bottom 300 like Gigli and From Justin To Kelly. I'm sure there are 3 or 4 people who like those movies.

It's not being a movie buff however. You can't like everything. I'm sorry, you can't. You have to have some taste. Right now, Austin's taste is everything. I bet half of those movies are utter crap.

Plus, if he was a true DVD/movie fan. They would be stored better. Those DVD's stacked in a garage cannot be doing very well. I hope you aren't keeping all this to sell them 50 years from now because they are going to be in horrible condition.

This sounds like the guy I saw on Dateline that kept everything he owned and never threw anything. He actually went through garbage cans to find random odds and ends. If that's what you want to do with your life then fine. I'm no one to judge. But let's stop calling him a DVD fan and started calling him a media collector. Because if you have to own every VHS, DVD, Magazine, Laserdisc, whathaveyou, then that's what you are.

I'm not sure if this was mentioned/asked or not but is there a Mrs. Austin54?

I have just under 2000 DVDs(including the porn ) and around 2000 VHS, plus about 300 LD. I'm converting any extra bedroom into my media room. there is no way my wife would want stacks and stacks of DVDs and VHS tapes around the house like that. they would either find themselves out for trash when I'm not home or I would end up divorced.

Since Austin appears to be such a good sport without even a hint of animosity in his posts, I dare say some people that seem so angry towards his collection come across as jealous to me.

Not jealous in the slightest. If anything, I'm a little disturbed. If I wanted 5000 DVDs, I could have that many. That's my whole point. Being selective and having taste is part of DVD collecting. In my opinion. Buying every DVD that comes out just seems buying for buying's sake.

I agree. Austin has been nothing but nice in his posts. I don't understand the animosity and hair splitting over what a "collector" and a "true movie fan" really means.

However, if the animosity is over the DVDs being in such a mess, carry on. (I kid, I kid)

First, there is no Mrs Dridge. However I do live with relatives which is why some of the collection is in the garage.
The garage only has VHS tapes in it. No dvds.
I never got any laserdiscs because I never go the appropriate machine
Gigli I own, but haven't watched yet. It was part of a group purchase.
From Justin to ... - Don't have
Rennervision - Thank you
I have some of the bottom list on IMDB, but I have most of the top 100 too.
I was looking at PJ Jenning's list. It looks very similar to what I have if someone is trying to get an idea of what I have.
I will try and post some more pictures if my friend comes over tomorrow. No promises.
By the way, I am not buying every movie. I believe there are over 100,000. I am not even close.

Hell, I've seen people on this board call some of the greatest movies I've ever seen "crap". Just because YOU don't like a certain movie means absolutely NOTHING to ANYONE else.... and implying otherwise and insulting other peoples' taste (as you have been doing repeatedly in this thread and others) is arrogant and rude.

QuiGon:
it's his money and collection. He doesn't need to impress anyone with it. You can poke fun but your posts are more beligerant & insulting now. It's great that you trimmed down your collection but if someone has the funds to own every DVD on the planet, who are you to judge? Just chill out bro.

if I had the $ I would own a ton of movies too. remember one persons trash is another persons treasure. just because someone owns a bunch of "shitty" movies it doesn't mean they think they are crappy. everyone is a unique individual. by most people I have some crappy taste in my flicks. who cares though. I buy what I like.

Sorry for the double post, but I couldn't resist.
Do you really call Oliver Twist, Brazil, Caine Mutiny, Casablanca,
Some Like It Hot, Stalingrad, Captain Blood, Pleasantville, etc.
bad movies? I have also picked up a number of plays and musical pieces (Sondheim), and tv shows like Buffy and Angel. A good part of the collection is like that.

This is my 1st post here and I just wanted to say that I thought I was hot poo with my piddly 1500 DVD collection. Granted it's alot in my circle of friends and some of the other boards that I frequent, But Austin....I bow to your greatness. I aspire to have as many DVD's as you do some day.

Granted the wife won't be too pleased, but what the hell!

Let me chime in with my measly little 815 DVD collection. I don't understand why people get so upset about how many DVD's somebody else owns. People buy the films they like, that's it. The keyword here being like which people often seem to confuse with taste. The difference is terribly important and one should be able to understand that difference. I'm quite certain that my collection contains a number of crappy films that for one reason or another I like. I'm quite aware however that they are neither great nor even good films.

It's not really that hard for me to imagine having 5000 DVDs. I have almost 1000, and there are usually a half dozen or so that I wouldn't mind having, if money, space, time, and negative wife-points were not an issue. If I bought every DVD I'd like to have, I'd probably have almost that many, even though I'd still be passing up many more than I purchased.

Austin,

I live on Long Island (in RVC). I think I actually might have bumped into you once at the CD Warehouse on Merrick Road as I was browsing the new arrivals rack. There was a guy at the counter chatting up the clerks about how he had over 20,000 VHS tapes and a similarly enormous amount of DVDs. I instantly got this mental image of enormous end-of-Citizen-Kane-esque stacks of VHS, DVDs, and other detritus stacked up in a dank basement or garage, obscuring the light and crowding the human residents out of the house.

Seeing the pictures you posted it looks like I wasn't too far off the mark. I'm hoping (and praying for your relatives) that you've got things under control in the rest of the house. I can see some merits in assembling an enormous movie library (even if it's not something I would do), but think that if you really care about it as much as you say you do then careful storage and cataloguing should be your first priority.
