Dvd Addicts Support Group

Telling you wife or girlfriend about your problem does not work. I just found myself sneaking around and buying dvds behind her back. You just have to hit bottom. There should be a support group for us dvd addicts. Mabye we should start one.

"Hi. My name's Mike, and I am an addict."

"Hello, Mike", Group replies.

I actually remember the exactly moment when my mind "snapped", and I started buying tons and tons of DVD's. It was winter of 1997, and my then girlfriend (now wife) said, "I visited so-and-so this weekend, and I noticed he had a lot of DVD's. He was suprised that I even knew what they were (my wife is not very technologically inclined). He has a lot more than ...... you."

And BAM! That was it. Through '98 and '99, I probably bought more than half of the new releases each week. The deals in the early days of 800.com, Reel.com, Buy.com, MassMusic, etc sure fueled my addiction.

I am now recovering. I recently started selliing a number of my DVD's, mostly double-dips and duplicates and such. Although I still have a hard time passing up a great deal, when they come along.

The real turning point for me, which was one of the hardest things I have ever done, was selling my only original sealed copy of Criterion's Salo. ... although that $750 fueled a whole lot of DVD purchases in the short term. :D

Getting your priorities right is the most important so step 1 should be to immediately get rid of your wife or girlfriend.

That is so true. You really need to pick one or the other.

Heres a way to get out of the addiction. Do not buy or preorder any more dvds until you have seen everything in your collection that you have not seen yet. You can take advantage of deals as they come but make sure your list of unseen DVD's doesnt get too high.

I've been doing this for quite a while and now I only buy maybe 2 or 3 a month. If I can't find the time to watch my movies then I shouldn't be buying them. My list of unseen DVD's is currently one and has been as high as 5.

You won't sucker me into your cult!

Damn, five is like a year long holdout on watching dvd's.... :)

Jackskeleton 08-23-04 12:20 AM

I just saw Penn and Tellers Bullshit about 12 stepping.. this thread can only have a success rate of 5%

so go out and enjoy your dvds.

You're not an addict! What are you doing here! -wink-

I have over 1000 DVD's and my "unwatched" percentage is somewhere on the order of 55-60%.

i snuck around my wife to buy goodfellas last week, i gave her my pile of reciepts to do the checkbook and didn't say anything. of course she then asked about the BB reciept and why i bought goodfellas.

i'm not as bad as you guys though. i've been pretty good lately and haven't bought much. gotta wait till the house is finished being built.
