TOP GUN SE info. Looks to be awesome
from the digitalbits
Here's one I know you've been waiting for. Paramount has just revealed to us that they'll be releasing the Top Gun: Special Collector's Edition on 11/16 (SRP $19.99). There will be separate anamorphic widescreen and full frame versions of the release, each a 2-disc set. The widescreen version will be presented at an aspect ratio of 2.40:1. Both versions will feature audio in English Dolby Digital 5.1 EX and DTS 6.1 ES, along with French Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround. Extras will include audio commentary (by producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Tony Scott, screenwriter Jack Epps and Top Gun vets Captain Mike Galpin, retired Admiral Pete Pettigrew and Vice Admiral Mike McCabe), 6 documentaries on the making of the film and its cultural impact (from pre-production through its theatrical release), 4 music videos (Kenny Loggins' Danger Zone, Berlin's Take My Breath Away, Loverboy's Heaven in Your Eyes and Harold Faltermeyer and Steve Stevens' Top Gun Anthem), a vintage Tom Cruise interview, a vintage behind-the-scenes featurette, a vintage Survival Training featurette, multi-angle storyboards with optional commentary by director Tony Scott, and 7 original TV spots.

Top Gun in DTS
Most over-rated surround sound track on VHS.
Most over-rated PCM surround sound track on Laserdisc.
Most over-rated Dobly Digital track on Laserdisc. (I assume the original DVD uses the same mix...) There was an over-loaded LFE track, and maybe 2 split surround effects when jets zipped by. Otherwise, it was pretty much a nicely split stereo mix for the music.
Unless there is some major re-tooling of the soundtrack, this will become the most over-rated DD EX and DTS ES soundtrack in the history of DVD, HD-DVD, Blu-Ray or whatever comes down the pipe.
Hopefully this disc will have the original 2.35 aspect ratio, and not the 2.0 aspect ratio that was on the previous widescreen LD.
I'm really looking forward to the supplements. Too bad the couldn't come up with some new Tom Cruise interviews, but it not that surprising.

So, given the different aspect ratios will it be cropping the previous transfer (giving us less film) or will it be giving us more by extending the frame outward and leaving the vertical info untouched? A bit of both?

So far* it's yet another movie that "Mr. Scientology" can't be bothered to participate in. We're stuck with a "vintage" [read: before he became famous thanks to this flick] interview.
Oh well. I'm still buying.
* [I say "so far" since the specs could change. Yeah, right.]

I also clued in to the repetitive use of "vintage" (read: really old stuff) in the release.

Yeah, but I suppose i'm still smarting from his lack of participation on the Legend DVD [one of my favorite flicks].
Top Gun, more than any other of his flicks, is responsible for helping to make him what he is today.
Perhaps he has something against the Scott brothers?
