Is it Common for Studios to Release the First Season of a Show on DVD but NOT the Fut
I am asking this because I started renting the show "Soul Food" from Showtime via Netflix. I really like the show. But I now realize that they have only put out the first season.
Now, the first season was released back in 2003 at some point...and the show lasted five seasons on Showtime.
Does anyone know if a show has had it's first season released on DVD but not the future seasons? My first guess for no second season of Soul Food would be that the sales or rentals weren't great, but I honestly have no idea. And I would have to imagine that other studios have had shows sell under expectations and yet the future seasons got released...
Either way...what are people's thoughts...thanks.

Showtime/hbo shows take some time to hit dvd for some reason. Usually they will follow through because there has to be some fan base for it. Sales need to be atleast decent. So unless it was really a bomb in sales I doubt they wouldn't release the rest of the series. worse case I could think is that it isn't a priority title they want to fill so it takes a little longer to make it on the shelves.

Studios have discontinued releasing certain series on dvd after only one or two seasons. Malcolm in the Middle was discontinued after the first season, and NYPD Blue was discontinued after the second season dvd release.

Twin Peaks has been stalled by legal considerations, not lack of interest or sales.
Showtime has been releasing Queer as Folk on a regular basis, timed to hit stores just as a new season is hitting TV, so good sales do help.
Didn't The Mary Tyler Moore Show also stop after the first season release?

The Larry Sanders Show was discontinued after one season.
However, NYPD Blue Season Three is apparently set to come out (the Jan 13th date is being postponed) because Fox wants to find a date that is less crowded so that it will sell well.
