After Hours...where's the love?
 

One of my Holy Grails on DVD has always been Martin Scrosese's "After Hours." For years, I've been stuck with a horrible, worn-out VHS copy, and now we're less than a week away from the disc debut of this great, quirky comedy.

I guess I thought there'd be more cultish fervor around here surrounding this title. Where's the love? Or by admitting my love for this 1985 movie, am I just showing my age? I saw it in theaters and was bowled over.

I've been waiting for this one for years. It's one of my "MOst Wanted" on DVD. Great film.

I'm looking forward to retiring my VHS copy as well. After Hours is actually my favorite Scorsese film, although I admittedly haven't seen a few of them. I was thinking about picking up the box-set, since it has two movies I haven't seen, but I'll have to see how much more expensive it is.

You guys are gonna be BLOWN AWAY by the image quality on this thing. It's beautiful.

It's at the top of my want list. I still think it's one of Scorsese's best. It has all the elements of a great movie. It's funny, sad, weird, quirky and has some great acting with a great and varied cast. Oddly enough I also like the music even though its an understated score it really adds emphasis to the quiet moments in the movie.

Instead of the upcoming boxed set I would have really liked to have seen After Hours and Goodfellas packaged with Taxi Driver, Casino and Gangs of New York.

Now that would be a killer set.

It's actually my favorite Scorsese film, and is in my top 10 films list.

Can't wait until next Tuesday!

I'm waiting to see if anyone will offer a sale price on the Scorsese boxset next week. So far, I haven't seen it advertised anywhere.
If nothing turns up by Sunday, I'll just fulfill my CH account with the set.
Who will have the best price for this? Most of the pre-order prices I've seen are in the $41-45 range. Not bad, but I'm hoping for something a little better on release week.

I think there is plenty of love for this movie. It's one of my favorites, but when people look at Scorsese's body of work it's easy to overlook a less prestigious comedy.

This reminds me of when a critics poll of the 10 best Hitchcock movies omitted Strangers on a Train. It says more about Hitchcock's body of work that Strangers isn't considered one of his 10 best.

Huge love for this film here. I was always fond of this movie because of Dunne's performance (it's a shame he did not have a very successful career as a Hollywood actor). Anyway, I can't wait to get my hands on the DVD and am stoked after reading the DVDTalk review. :up:

Not my favorite Scorsese, but I'll be getting it in the boxed set. And I see that Mean Streets is on its way to me for review :drool: :drool: :drool: :drool:

Does anyone know if this release has the original ending (either in the film or as a deleted scene)?

As I mention in the review, an alternate ending is discussed in the featurette. Some sketches are shown. But the presentation of the film is the theatrical cut.

I plan to get the box set and am looking forward to After Hours. My copy of it is Beta for pete's sake.

I can't wait to finally see this letterboxed. My dad is going to crap himself when he gets this for Christmas. :)

ROTFL! When I heard this line during my first viewing I can't describe how hard I laughed. Griffin Dunne's performace was masterful. You feel his anxiety and frustration to the point of comical rage. Its... soooo funny.

That line and two other points in the movie had me rolling on the floor.

I've never seen it, and since this is Scorsese we're talking about, it's a no-brainer. Can't wait.

You are in for a real treat.

Sadly enough, I haven't seen any Scorsese films (I'm so young!). The comments from you guys though have me quite interesting.

don't start with after hours. start with goodfellas. it's a great combination between loose, fast and entertaining style and serious and innovative. Then watch Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Mean Streets and King of Comedy (maybe in that order). Then watch After Hours. Eventually catch up on all of it: Last Temptation of Christ, Bringing Out the Dead, Gangs of New York, etc...

Mind you, this isn't in order of best to worst at all, but an order that I think would help introduce you to his work.

i dunno..i actually saw this on cinemax a little while back and was very unimpressed..i wonder if i missed soemthing.

what a great film. it's been on my most wanted dvd list since I started building my library. seen it maybe 20 or 25 times and at last.....will see it looking good!! it's in my personal top 25 faves.

I would TOTALY buy a deluxe edition that included a replica of the paperweight! -eek-

Really the only Scorcese movie I love. One of my all time favorite movies.
