Commercial DVD sizes?
 

Is there any place (web sites devoted to it or other) to find the actual size in GB that a commercial DVD holds? Sometimes you can guess from the included content and sometimes you might find some small print indicating dual-layer, but I'm curious if there's a better/more reliable way to tell.

Also, does anybody know of any sites that compare the feature film quality on movies that are released in bare-bones and special edition formats (the thinking being that because more space can be devoted to the film on a bare-bones disc, it might be of better quality)?

If someone were, say, interested in making uncompressed copies, this information could come in handy, of course, soon enough, double sided recordable DVDs will be cheap...

dvd profiler lists if the disc is dualsided or not, I think.

easy FunkPish, if i hadn't said something, someone would have called me out for the implied idea.
plus i don't see you berating all the people in the "what do people say about your collection" posts that lend out dvds.
plus there are legitimate reasons to make backups of your own collection, i currently make copies of discs i take with me when i travel.
plus if someone were to, say, actually illegally lend out their discs, they could make a copy, which would put an end to all the bitching about people not getting their discs back in a timely manner.
finally, it seems in these forums, you are dealing mostly with afficionados and collectors, none of whom would enjoy a copy of disc even if it were a 1:1 copy because the artwork and packaging are considered an important part of the dvd. i won't tread into the area of collectors who like to keep their disc in mint condition and not even open the package. you could bat around the idea of them renting the same movie, making a copy, so they had a watchable copy, while maintaining their original in it's sealed packaging, since they own the movie, it technically wouldn't be illegal to have a recorded copy of it as well.

As FinkPish wrote, you're dancing around an area that is off limits here. You could be smart enough to be a little more discreet about it.
