Catching up on Warner Brothers 2-discs
 

I own True Romance and Citizen Kane... but I'd like to catch up on a lot of the other ones.

First and foremost I think I want Casablanca, Treasure of Sierra Madre, Yankee Doodle Dandy, and maybe My Fair Lady and Around The World In 80 Days.

Anyway, my real question is how can I get caught up? There's box sets out there like the Warner Legends Collection which package a couple of the ones I mentioned above with Robin Hood, which (even though I'm not TOO interested in RH, it's still cheaper to buy the box set than to buy them individually.

Then ther'es the Bogart Collection which looks great, has the re-issue of Treasure and Casablanca...and packages other Bogarts I don't have BUT I think I remember one or two of them being planned for an SE...which pretty much makes the box set useless now.

Are there any other box sets that may help me? Like the Cagney box set or something? I'm not sure if I'm forgetting one.
Or if there's some "Warner Legends Vol 2" planned.

If I were you, I would join Columbia House to get the other titles you want. The cost will average around $7.50 each, and they carry almost all of the 2-Disc titles.

I think the $5 off Amazon.ca and box set prices may turn out to be cheaper... just not sure which box set to invest in.

got volume 1. Robin hood is awesome. I don't know anyone who is disappointed with that movie. The features on those 2-disks are great. The warner night at the movies is one of the best dvd features out there.

Don't forget to get Unforgiven and Singin' in the Rain. :)

Oh yeah Singin' In The Rain... I have that too! It's actually one of my FAVOURITE dvds in my collection.

Never seen Unforgiven though.

Unforgiven is a really great movie and the features aren't bad. It's a good one to have, the transfer looks really good from what I remember.

I have The Adventures of Robin Hood, Yankee Doodle Dandy, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The Lon Chaney Collection, Citizen Kane, Casablanca: SE, Singin' in the Rain: SE, My Fair Lady: SE, Around the World in 80 Days, Amadeus: Director's Cut, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: SE, and Doctor Zhivago...

I recommend all of them, but especially Casablanca: SE, The Adventures of Robin Hood, and Doctor Zhivago. They're extremely popular films (even to those who aren't big fans of the classics), have excellent video and audio, and enough extras to make your head spin.

The rest are fantastic, too, but Cuckoo's Nest and Amadeus aren't as extras-rich as the three I mentioned. Excellent video and audio, though. Yankee Doodle Dandy, Sierra Madre, My Fair Lady, and Citizen Kane are MUST HAVES for your collection... although, I know My Fair Lady may not be everyone's cup of tea.

The Lon Chaney Collection is worth a buy if just for the documentary and The Unknown. Laugh Clown Laugh and The Ace of Hearts are good Chaney films, but "Ace" is often said to be lesser (not to mention is has a very scratchy, yet beautiful-in-image-quality transfer).

Around the World in 80 Days is a fun movie that's worth a try. It's a LOT better than the recent "remake" and has the best 5.1 mix I've heard for a pre-1970's film. The video is amazing, given the film elements were not in very good condition.

Adventures of Robin Hood is must have. It's amazing the way that 65+ year old film looks after restoration. It's also amazing that as a movie, it hold up extremely well. It's like Star Wars in the Woods, seriously. If you like Star Wars. If you don't like Star Wars, then it's just a good fun action/adventure movie, and we'll leave it at that. :)

Feel free to skip the Robin Hood: Prince of Theives 2-Discer though.

I second that. The added scenes in the extended cut hurt the pacing of the picture, and are not in the least bit worthwhile or memorable.

I have a good deal of them, they're some of the best DVDs out there so I definitely know why you want to collect more. Sometimes online retailers will do a sale like 20% off discs from a particular studio- and when they do WB maybe you can pick something up. I've gotten a few from Columbia House as well, though I have no idea how it works for Canada.

One Flew Over A Cuckoo's Nest is a great one too.

I just got Unforgiven and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves through CH. I may have to take into consideration some of the advice posted in this thread and pick up Casablanca, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Doctor Zhivago, and Amadeus. I hope Prince of Thieves does not disappoint me as it did for evitagen and Joe Molotov. In my opinion 7.50 to 8.00 @ CH is the way to go for these 2disc versions. I hope they carry the ones I mentioned early, if so I will get them on next membership.

My favorites are Treasure of Sierra Madre, Citizen Kane, My Fair Lady, Casablanca and Unforgiven. In fact I like all of them a lot.

The weakest entries for me are Once Upon A Time, The Right Stuff and The Mission although I still think they are very good films.

I still need to pick up the Color Purple too.

I just watched One Flew over the Cuckoo's nest this week and was astounded on how good the audio and video quality are. The 5.1 track is pretty subdued with most of the sound coming out of the center channel.

I'm pretty close to having them all but I don't think I'll pick up Robin Hood unless I find it really cheap. I don't think the movie is very good and there is a lot of other stuff to buy.

You didn't look hard enough. Nothing wrong with the CH Canada selection. Checked the first three disks (Casablanca, Treasure of Sierra Madre, Yankee Doodle Dandy), and they're available. The others most likely are as well.

The only problem with CH Canada is you can't sign up online to get the full choice. You need to call them, get them to send you an order kit, then fill in the form and mail it in. A bit slower, but the full selection is available. You get a better deal as well, my commitment was 2 titles. Final cost per disk is $10.58 CDN, after all taxes and shipping.

The Casablanca SE was quite good, IMHO.

So far with the treatment that Warners has been giving alot of their catalog titles for this particular "series", there has been a couple of misfires.
