I'd definitely pick up a Poltergeist special edition if they ever did one... I've been holding off on the original release for a while now... although, with no rumblings at all on an SE ever happening, maybe I'll have to cave and pick it up... if they ever did an SE it'd be great if they could get the rights to the E True Hollywood Story on the Poltergeist Curse.

Count me in as well . . . I'd snap up a well done SE in a heartbeat! But, with all the political correctness in supplemental material these days, I doubt we'd get to hear about any of the good stuff (Hooper vs. Spielberg, the Curse, etc.).

I'd like to add to the potential extras: How about a Joe Bob Briggs commentary?

Husker 08-03-04 04:02 PM

It needs an SE version. For it's time it was a groundbreaking movie. Mom and dad smokin pot in bed, a young daughter in peril, and an attempt at depicting the study of ghosts as a serious science.

For those of you so inclined, tracking down the POLTERGEIST Deluxe Widescreen Edition LaserDisc may be a worthwhile stop-gap measure. It contains the U.S. trailer; a bizarre and somewhat lethargic, but still fascinating, International Trailer; a "Making Of" documentary with no Spielberg/Hooper dirt, but plenty of insight into the production itself; and a behind-the-scenes still gallery. Not comprehensive by any means, but a damn sight more than the DVD offers (save the DVD's anamorphic transfer, but really, from what I've heard, that isn't up to snuff really anyway). Until MGM or Warner does right by this title, the LaserDisc'll do right by me. Of course, I'm always curious what people think when they read my DVDTracker list and see the double feature DVD for POLTERGEIST II & III, but the original film's DVD isn't even on my want list, he he...

Speaking of the bad editing... I thought the disc had skipped, or that my player is on the fritz... only afterwards I found the pertinent info on the 'net...

I actually say Poltergeist 3 last night, and enjoyed it :)

I was thinking the same thing. The E! True Hollywood Story is repeated often for those of you interested. I'd love to see a SE of this film, I'd definately double dip for it. :)

Reviving this thread from the other side to ask if anyone's heard anything about a new Poltergeist disc coming any time soon. I've been a huge fan of the film ever since I was a kid, but have never picked up the current DVD, 'cause I always thought that a better version would be on the way.

Next year is the 25th (gulp!) anniversary--and a perfect time for Warner to release a two-disc special edition for it.

Anyone heard anything?

According to last year's HTF chat with Warner, a 25th anniversary edition is indeed planned.

For 2007. :(

(at least that's what the few sites that mention it as being)

yeldarb367 02-18-06 04:41 PM

I still have my snapper. Still hoping an SE will show up.

maingon 02-18-06 05:12 PM

I would love a commentary for this flick, used to be a favorite growing up

deadpool24 02-18-06 05:36 PM

I thought poltergeist 2 was more entertaining and scary. kane was a great character.

cactusoly 02-18-06 06:09 PM

I too have been waiting for a better edition. Its one of my fav movies that I don't own on DVD. I'm afraid that the day I buy it they will announce a SE (which has happened to me in the past)

Admiral7 02-19-06 12:52 PM

cactusoly, would you hurry up and buy it then, so Warner can expedite their Special Edition. I think they're waiting on you.

Gizmo 02-19-06 07:37 PM

They should do a Cast commentary...too bad only a few people are still alive. The older daughter was killed, the little girl died during the filing of Poltergeist 3, the old lady is gone....The house is STILL around. I drive by it every now and then, still freaks me out.

I could be wrong, but I think Zelda Rubinstein (the old lady/psychic) is still around, unless you were referring to Beatrice Straight, who died a few years ago. I don't think it would be too hard to get the remaining cast together to do a commentary as I've seen them before giving interviews in documentaries on A&E, E!, etc. regarding "The Poltergeist Curse".

Sunday Morning 02-19-06 11:04 PM

I think a commentary for this film would be sort of depressing... Everyone talking about all the dead cast members. Actually, that would be kinda interesting, in a morbid sort of way. Does Craig T. Nelson have a pact with the devil by the way? He's still around.

Doubtful spielberg will ever lend his thoughts about it on a documentary or anything.

Gizmo 02-19-06 11:51 PM

Critter and I could go and film something at the 'Poltergeist' house since its in our town. We will submit it to Warner Brothers in hopes of a SE release....Yeah...

lamphorn 02-20-06 02:02 PM

I also have not bought this DVD in hopes of a SE. Cast commentary would be a great idea. Wouldn't mind some director/screenwriter (oops, Spielberg wrote it, guess we won't hear from him) commentary. Maybe a doc about the "who directed it?" controversy, if they have the balls.

I don't know...if mailing a pig mask takes five months, I'm sure this Polter-project will see a release date of June 14th, 2057.

Matt 02-21-06 09:20 PM

From tonight's Warner chat at the HTF:

"Poltergeist SE still set for next year . . . 2-disc set with lots of goodies."

Mountain Biker 02-21-06 11:40 PM

2-disc set with lots of goodies
:hump:

xage 02-22-06 12:58 AM

at $3 buck.. satisfactory enough for this great horror film.

dsa_shea 02-23-06 04:48 PM

Bloodydisgusting has also mentioned the 2 disc set of this movie. Let's hope that we see it sooner than later.
