Showgirls VIP DVD Problems
 

I've tried this disc on three players:

Panny DVD-A130
Panny DVD-LV60
Apex AD-1130W

It won't load on any of them.

Anyone else having problems with this disc?

Really? I planned to pick it up tomorrow, but I want to see what others who have it say. From the various reviews that I read, I have not heard any trouble with playing it. Maybe you got a bum disk...

I am using a Toshiba SD-3900 and it works fine on that. I just tried it out on my DVD-ROM drive in my Dell and it works on there as well. Sounds like you might have a bad disc.

I will check mine as soon as it comes in, but since this is the first reported, it may, as pointed out, just be a bum disc.

Hmmmm. DDD just emailed me a return label, so hopefully I can determine within the next 10 days if it's a bad disc or an authoring error.

Most likely it is a player compatability issue. It might be a badly pressed disc, but an "authoring error" is very unlikely.

How old are your Panasonics? Their early models were very glitch prone, and if my memory serves me right, the A130 was either a first or second generation player that had all sorts of compatability problems. (I could be wrong about the model number though...)

No, you're right about the model number, I had the same one, and started getting all kinds of errors with newer discs. I recently upgraded to a Panasonic F65 and haven't had any problems since.

Actually, it's a Panny DVD-A120. I mistyped.

I have never had a single problem with the player before. All the discs that a lot of people have had issues with have never been a problem on it.

i had a second gen Panny (A310) years ago. great picture, but horrible with any discs that had special features (branching, R0 imports, etc.) they were well known for being finicky players, and your A120 is probably 3rd gen carrying over those same quirks.

just finished watching mine on my nice new 106" screen. worked flawlessly out of my sony ns725p

maybe u just have a bad disc

I just tried mine with no luck, the disc just spins up and spins and spins. My player is a Sony DVP-S330, which I know is old, but it has never failed to play a disc before. I also tried it in two DVD-ROM drives with even worse success, it completely froze both computers.

When you got 3 different players having the same problem on the same disc, it's a bad disc. Damn, I hate it when that happens. However, this can happen to old or dirty players too.

Doubtful. My ~110" wide (not diagonal) screen has pixels that are less than one tenth of an inch wide -- more precisely, 110/1360 = 0.08 inches per pixel. I'm sure that THORN's are in a similar range.

Although DVDs have about 720 discrete horizontal pixels, any projector system will scale that up and produce interpolated pixels. The interpolation is able to make visible more information than you can see with only 720 display pixels - it is similar to the way oversampling works on digital audio. Good (as in very expensive, or free software for your PC) scalers can even make use of information in time-adjacent frames to fill in additional real detail.

Projector systems, even low-end ones for under $1.5K are one of, if not the, best bang-for-the-buck values in home theater today. The problem is that the general public is unfamiliar with them -- very few people have systems at home for their neighbors to see and get comfortable with the idea of, so the general public continues to spend double and triple the amount of money required to get the same or sometimes even better picture quality with traditional tv sets.

Just tried it on two of my DVD players, and none of them picked it up.

nope i have a HD res panny PT-L500U native res 1280x720p pixels VERY small

the screen and PJ were the best investment i ever made

Sounds like there's some majorly bad discs in this pressing.

Hmmm. Haven't opened mine yet.


Still waiting to hear back from DDD about a price credit since it dropped from $25 to $20 right after I bought it from them.

Anyone have luck with that?

I tried it on my Pioneer Elite DV-38A and on my two computer drives and it didn't work on any....

I got mine at DDD as well, it's already on it's way back to them.

Mine plays fine on all my players, but I didn't get it from DeepDiscountDVD. I have a friend who got hers from then and hers won't play either and is being returned right now. Maybe there is a bad batch out there.

no wonder they dropped the price.....

This must be the legacy of Showgirls. If your DVD players won't play it, it's a subtle hint from the DVD Gods. :lol:

Got my DDD replacement yesterday. Works fine, and I got another T-shirt.
