2004 Olympics coverage... would you buy it on DVD if it were released?
 

I doubt this would happen, but if NBC decided to package the highlights of their Olympics coverage into something like a massive 30 hour 10 disc set, filled to the brim, would you be interested?

The last time the Olympics rolled around, 4 years ago, DVD's were just getting started. When crappy shows with one season runs get DVD releases, what's the chance of NBC selling the Olympics, assuming it were legal/authorized by IOC regulations?

Yes I would. But more importantly, I would buy the Bud Greenspan series 16 Days of Glory whcih initially was on the 84 Olympics and subsequently became an Olympic Documentary each time the Games were played. The cinematography/documentary style, tension of the events are shown in an amazing sense and get you truly interest in people and games that you may not have before.
I care more about the Field events than the Track events. I could never understand why they would show 2 hours of the Marathon.. cutting in and out.. or the three mile run and only 2 throws in the Shot Put, Discus .. or Pole Vault and High Jump.. etc... There is little time between attempts, yet time after time we see 3 hours of Baseball in the quarter finals of Jamaica vs. Netherlands.

I'd buy them if they would put out solid amounts of events in much of their entirity and not just highlights.

Nope, football is the only sport I would ever buy on dvd.

Perhaps it would make sense if it were split across events. For instance they could create a multi-disc compilation focused solely on Gymnastics and another compilation focused on Track & Field, etc. They could set these up as Limited Editions available for a few months. NBC is going to collect so much footage and it's just going to sit in a vault collecting dust. Another missed opportunity.

Not unless it was given a spine # and named Athens Olympiad or possibly called One Day In August :D

And as for a DVD or two of some of the events - how can I tell if it would be interesting and/or memorable since <i>it hasn't happened yet</i>?

If NBC did it... no way. I hate the way they've been treating the Olympics.

I'd like some sort of retrospective DVD of the 1996 Centennial games in Atlanta because I was heavily involved in them as a volunteer. Not sure I'd buy any other Olympic DVD (through Greenspan's work is teriffic, as is Criterion's release of "Tokyo Olympiad"). "One Day in September" was good as well, but not really the kind of thing I think we're all talking about. ;)

Winter Olympics - now that is where it's at! Of course, I still wouldn't buy a DVD of highlights.

There were 3 different DVDs for the 2002 Winter Olympics produced by NBC

You can bet there will be more than that for the 2004 games.

According to IMDB he is still goin (78yo).I've seen Greenspan's Doc on the 96 Olympics but nothing on the 2000 Games. He's done some stuff on the Winter Olympics since. I hope he continues with his work because his skills are one of the truly greats.

I've really enjoyed watching the Olympics. I would definitely be interested in adding it to my collection.

Everyone says no, but if someone had a misprice they'd be all over it. Maybe they should artificially raise the msrp, then let stores sell for about 20%. They'd sell tons.

Considering I'm not even watching it now in glorious HDTV, there's no chance I'd be interested in a DVD.

I got an email from Shop NBC with a 2004 Gymnastics compilation offer today:

It says the running time is only 65 minutes, that seems a bit short to be calling "comprehensive".
