20th Anniversary of Revenge Of The Nerds and Karate Kid DVDs?
 

With The 20th Anniversary of the theatrical release of Revenge Of The Nerds and Karate Kid soon approaching, are there any plans to release these two classic 80's movies with the treatment they deserve. I mean give me a break with the Karate Kid dvd being bare bones and non-OAR (standard). Revenge of the Nerds being a flipper disc with no extras really sucks as well. I just saw that the mens magazine FHM is doing a whole spread of the cast of Revenge of the Nerds for there 20th Anniversary (they're all on the cover of the August FHM cover). So I figure if they are hyping the Anniversary in mainstream magazines then maybe there is hope for a 20th Anniversary Edition. I think its pathetic that during the 20th Anniversary of Karate Kid the movie isn't even available because its OOP. Its definitely time for some re-releases.

I would defenity upgrade Revenge of the Nerds if they get a special treatment.

I know what its like to see a subject of a thread and think that the subject is a fact not a question. Its really annoying, so I try not to do that.

If they did give this a SE rerelease. Would it be uncut this time? Even if the phone number visible in one scene has to be blurred out. It is a better option than cutting the portion it is visible out completely.

i really want Karate Kid, at least ROTN is available right now.....and in OAR...

I think a new 5.1 soundtrack would be a great improvement, and perhaps a cast commentary track, trivia track, music videos, etc would be great.

Revenge of the Nerds is an 80's classic. However, considering the transfer is good for its age and given "Nerds 2" is on the flipside, I doubt anything will happen as far as SE. I do agree that the phone number scene shoudl have been handled differently.

I'm sure eventually something with Karate Kid will be done because of the current disc's travesty.

Sorority houses of the world, beware! On Tuesday, July 20, 2004, Revenge of the Nerds celebrates the 20th anniversary of its theatrical release. To commem- orate this momentous occasion, FHM reunited the film's legendary characters and got an oral history of its creation. Here, in this FHMUS.com exclusive, are 10 things you didn't know about the greatest film ever made.
1. Curtis Armstrong (Booger) originally auditioned for the role of Gilbert. "I told my friend Bronson Pinchot that if they offer me Booger, I'll turn it down," Armstrong said. "I said, 'I'll be damned if I'm going to be Booger.' But I took it. I needed the money."
2. Executive producer and current Variety editor Peter Bart said the idea for Revenge of the Nerds came from a story his 11-year-old daughter Dilys wrote about bright college students. When he sold the story to Interscope Communications, he put the money into her college fund. She eventually went to Stanford and is now an eye surgeon.
3. Orson Welles narrates the movie's trailer, Marshall Field’s heir and Interscope Records creator Ted Field produced and financed the film and Oscar-nominated actor Michael Lerner (Barton Fink) plays Gilbert's racist uncle in scenes that ended up on the cutting-room floor. "I don't even know if I saw it," Lerner says. "I don't remember a damn thing about it. John Goodman was in it? Holy mackerel!"
4. Before filming began in Tucson, Robert Carradine (Lewis) and Anthony Edwards (Gilbert) went down a week early and pledged fraternities in full costume." The head guy at one was literally wearing one of those hats with two beer cans and tubes coming down," Carradine says. "Our escort says, 'Biff, these guys want to pledge.' Biff looks at us and says, 'No way!' We had nailed it."
5. When Lewis and Gilbert arrive at Adams College and are called nerds for the first time, Ogre drops a student off of the Alpha Beta house. That student was Corey Eubanks, Bob Eubanks's son.
6. Matt Salinger (Danny Burke) is the son of Catcher in the Rye author/famed recluse J.D. Salinger. "We didn't discuss Revenge of the Nerds," Matt says. "He was just happy I was working."
7. In scenes that were eventually cut, Stan Gable has a nerdy brother who blackmails him by threatening to reveal that they are related. During the speech at the end of the film, Stan actually joins the nerds and gets in touch with his nerd roots.
8. David Obst was the literary agent for Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein (All the President's Men) and hired Cameron Crowe to write Fast Times at Ridgemont High. In addition to being the executive producer for Revenge of the Nerds, he played The Moper: one who exposes himself to blind people.
9. The infamous belches were created by mixing a human belch with camel noises. “They had everyone burp to find the best one,” Salinger says. “Booger would be upset at this, but I suspect his burp was partly mine.”
10. The original writers of the script based the story on technological-based pranks that students were pulling at Pasadena's Cal Tech campus. The cast went back to Pasadena 20 years later for this photo shoot.

That's the FHM article that I was referring to. I would think that something should be in the works if they are spending the time and money to promote the anniversary of the film. Most covers on magazines are to tie in different marketing gimmicks and promote a specific product. I don't know if she's right but my girlfriend seems to think that FHM would not have gone through the trouble of putting these Revenge Of The Nerds Alumni's on the cover unless Fox was planning something significant for the Anniversary. That something might not be a re-release but it may be. My girlfriend is in the publishing business and works with FHM and many other magazines on a regular basis.

I'd gladly buy either (an I have the current version of ROTN). I could definitely see an Animal House type disc for ROTN.

Who's the guy in the back row with the football? That isn't Ted McGinley, is it? I guess Edwards and Goodman are too big now, but they definitely missed by not getting Tim Busfield in there.

No, that's not Stan Gable. I'm not sure who it is, though.

Count me in for the Karate Kid. We should see a box set of some kind. As for ROTN I'm happy with the 2 movie treatment by Fox. I'd consider double dipping for an SE depending on the supplements.

I'd have to suppose it's Matt Salinger, who, you may or may not know, also played Captain America in the rarely-seen 1990's movie of the comic book character.

And maybe they couldn't get Gilbert, but what about his Omega Mu girlfriend? Where's she at?

I'd definitely upgrade my ROTN copy if there's a better video transfer and better soundtrack. Won't do it just for the extras though.

Hopefully the new version will exclude the awful sequel that they forced on us with the existing release.

Yeah, whatever did happen to Michelle Meyrink? She was in all sorts of teen flicks in the '80s. Then she just dropped off the map.

There is a box set of the Karate Kid but it's in PAL. Columbia/Sony/whoever needs to release all 3 films in a deluxe set.

ESPN Classic has shown the first film a few times, and the cast is seen commenting every few minutes.

Like it shows Ralph talking about how cold the water was when he fell off the boat, and that the climactic scene was changed when he had hurt himself in a previous scene...

I spoke to someone at Columbia Tristar Customer Service. I told them that my Karate Kid DVD was defective, and needed it to be replaced. I was put on hold and then was told that it was out of print (which I already knew). She then said that I could recieve a voucher towards any other Columbia Tristar release, I said that I wanted the movie that I originally bought and asked to speak to a supervisor. I was put on hold and when she came back she said that it would most likely be available in mid fall. I asked if it was an exact re-issue or different dvd with different content and format and she said she didn't know. I hope that she was talking about a completely new dvd with proper ratio and some decent extras.

Knowing Columbia will probably get a completely new transfer and have it released in foolscreen again.

I told one my friends to call Columbia Tristar Customer Service and try to find out from another customer service rep that the info I was told was true. My friend called them up and told them the same thing I told them. He said to the guy that he had a defective Karate Kid Dvd and needed it replaced. The guy told him the dvd was currently out of production but it should be available again in October. So now we have at least have two people giving similar information. We also have a month to expect it. Obviously I take all of this info with a grain of salt because I wouldn't be surprised if both service reps were wrong. I think that the average dvdtalk.com forum member know more than the average movie studio customer rep. Just wanted to fill everyone in on the info I got.
