Any word on "Donnie Darko: Director's Cut" DVD?

Just want to see if there is any word whatsoever on the new director's cut that is/was just released in theaters being release hopefully soon on DVD?

neatMCsammer 07-12-04 02:53 PM

No word. No word at all. -smile- Actually, I believe there are plans to release the Director's Cut on DVD, but nothing's been officially announced yet. In the meantime, it is being released in New York and L.A. on the 23rd. Hopefully it'll come to Dallas quite soon, for I am pumped for it. That's right, pumped.

On the 22nd Richard Kelly (and a possible surprise guest) will be discussing the movie at San Diego Comic Con. There will be an audience Q&A, so I'm sure the subject of a DVD release will be asked.

Mark_vdH 07-12-04 03:59 PM

It's been announced in the UK as a 2 disc set with the following features (TBC):

Disc 2:

Director's Cut of the film (2 hours and 13 minutes)
All-new Director's Cut specific audio commentary
'Anatomy Of A Scene' documentary from the Sundance Channel
'Donnie Darko Production Diary' documentary
'The Cultural Impact Of Donnie Darko In The UK' featurette
'Mad World' music video
Director's Cut trailer

Disc 2:

Theatrical cut of the film
Audio commentary from writer/director Richard Kelly and star Jake Gyllenhaal
Audio commentary from members of the cast and crew including Richard Kelly, Drew Barrymore, Katherine Ross and Jean Malone
Deleted and extended scenes with optional audio commentary from Richard Kelly
'B-Roll Footage': interviews with principal members of the cast and crew
'The Philosophy Of Time Travel' featurette
Website gallery
Artwork gallery
UK art exhibition
'They Made Me Do It': the making of the art gallery
'Cunning Visions' gallery
TV spots
Filmographies of cast and crew

Note that disc 2 is basically the previous (UK) release of the theatrical cut.

i never bought the old release because i heard about the new release. so if the old release is on the new release, well, that's just peachy!

ToddJamesPierce 07-13-04 01:06 PM

That's 20 minutes of additional footage in the new cut. I heard that he cut a lot of religous alegory from the film.

Kelly said in an interview lately that while the director's cut would be in theatres in the fall, there are NO PLANS to release it on DVD.

It was in either Video Business or Video Store Magazine. I'm sure someone can provide a link.

that simply cannot be accurate. i don't doubt your info. but this is a dvd world and it is inevitable considering this movie is alive and kicking simply because of the following from the original DVD release!!!

I sat in on the Donnie Darko Director's Cut panel today.

Richard Kelly was joined by James Duval, Stuart Stone, Beth Grant and producer Sean McKittrick.

Richard said the movie will have a 2-disc release. He said there will be new extras that won't duplicate what is contained on the current release. He also said there will be a new commentary track.

So, good news for DVD fans of the movie.

jough 07-22-04 09:28 PM

Awesome. Glad Kelly relented into working on a new DVD release.

I figured he would've if they paid him. ;)

Great news.

This is absolutely fantastic news and as expected. Any projected date per chance??

Hmmm I don't think he mentioned a street date. The movie is opening in LA/NY and will expand to more cities as time goes by.

This is pure speculation but maybe it'll be out before the end of the year? Since the studio wanted the re-release in the first place (it was Richard's idea to do a DC) they will probably want the DVD out soon also.

Jackskeleton 07-23-04 12:26 AM

yeah, 2 disc is in the cards. dopeness indeed.

FuzzyBallz 07-23-04 02:26 AM

Gimme, gimme, gimme. So glad I didn't buy the 1st one even though it so cheap. I'm cutting down on double dipping.

asianxcore 07-23-04 03:23 AM

I just bought the 1 disc recently since it was only 10 bucks. definately will douple dip on this one.

QuiGonJosh 07-23-04 04:46 AM

i may just get the current release...has I think the DC is probably gonna try and make everything to known in the movie...I like a movie to be ambiguous...

You should pick up the one-disc version now. Kelly said the commentary and extras will not be ported over to the 2-disc set.

TomOpus 07-23-04 08:49 AM

[Howard Johnson] ChrisKnight is right![/Howard Johnson]

It's cheap and you could probably find a used copy for a song.

jough 07-23-04 03:38 PM

I just got the 1-disc a few months ago - I don't regret it. I liked the movie enough to check out the DC in theatres, and then I'll have to decide if I like the new cut enough to buy the DVD.

There's nothing at all wrong with the current disc.

cfloyd3 07-23-04 07:30 PM

I paid $24.99 at Best Buy for this when it was first out there.. I didn't expect this bigtime cult hype that it got on the internet (I am assuming the dropped DVD price also helped). A little disheartening to see your little engine that could be loved by everyone but it is good that it made it a pretty big success as it deserves. Over time I have lost my first thoughts of greatness I felt for it (mainly because of the ambitious originality), as it has its flaws. I will surely buy the director's cut though since the first DVD had so many worthwhile deleted scenes that added to the story. I told everyone it needs a new cut with most of that footage helping the story and it appears we are getting it.

Rubix 07-24-04 01:44 AM

here is a negative review of the director's cut. one thing i don't like is that they removed the killing moon song, which ruled. the new inxs song is not nearly as good, but who knows.

i'm still seeing this movie on the big screen.
