Beyond the 2.5, a deluxe release should probably come out with a movie ticket just before Spiderman 3 goes on screen. Just speculating :p

Director Raimi To Film New Scenes for 'Spider-Man 2.5'

Not only does Sony plan to release the Spider-Man 2 DVD in November, but it also plans to release Spider-Man 2.5, with additional action and effects scenes next year, director Sam Raimi has told the website IGN.com. It is really not a matter of his wanting to release a director's extended cut of the film, Raimi indicated. "Sony said to me, 'We want to release a 2.5,' because they want to make more money. It's not really that I had some scenes to put in. The movie really was the best I could make it. It's not like I think I could make it better." Asked why the studio is waiting until next year to release the extended version, Raimi responded: "It's just a financial decision by the studio. They know that people who liked the second movie would want to own it as it is on DVD, and then it's just a gamble. 'Oh, if we spend another four million dollars, can we make another ten million dollars?' I think that's how it works."

Wannabe 11-30-04 01:48 PM

I wonder if all of the new scenes are just CGI?

Fok 11-30-04 03:03 PM

Now I'm not quite sure what to do. Buy now or wait for 2.5 next year......I really hate double dipping :/

Simpson Purist 11-30-04 03:25 PM

I'll probably skip Spidey 2.5 since it looks like the new footage is going to be minimal at best.

I wouldn't say ego, exactly; it sounds like the company was gonna do the cash grab anyway, and Raimi balked at participating until they gave him money to film stuff he wanted to do initially but didn't have the budget to do. I wish more studios did business that way (but, then again, I wish more blockbusters were directed by folks like Raimi or Jackson).

Any updates?

It was reported as coming out the second half of 2005. We're starting to get October release dates, so I'm wondering if this 2.5 release is still targeted for this year.

I would say no, but could be wrong. Nothing has been mentioned so far.

Mike Lowrey 07-21-05 04:25 PM

I was thinking about this release the other day. So yeah, like you said, we're getting late into the year with late year release date announces and still no word on this release. Wasn't it due to be released earlier this year already? Quite frankly, I don't care if it never happens. There's really no need for it.

Uhm. Its still 2005. Why would you already be expecting a 2006 release date?

If thats just a typo, the new movie isnt coming out until 2007, so a release this far in advance doesnt make sense to me. While a release at the end of next year will get people excited about the new movie.

Isnt this the timetable the Spiderman Deluxe Edition took - released a couple months before the second movie?... as did the Xmen 1.5 DVD?

bboisvert 07-21-05 05:17 PM

I wouldn't expect this much before the third film hits the theaters. It'll probably be released around the same time for the "synergy" effect. Releasing it now doesn't make much sense, from a marketing perspective.

If thats just a typo…

Yeah, it was a typo on my part. News of 2.5 was announced right around the June 30, 2004 theatrical release. I was led to believe Raimi would work (i.e., supervise) on this in February 2005 and it was to be released by the end of this year. I really don't see Raimi making an announcement of this kind if the intent was to release it just prior to Spider-man 3 in 2007. That's a three-year announcement for a DVD. No studio, especially Sony, would announce a future double-dip that's three years down the road. As it is, should 2.5 come out by Christmas 2005, that will have been a year between releases. That seems pretty normal.

I imagine there'll be a Spider-man 1/Spider-man 2.5/bonus disc bundle that will come out in May 2007 with a Spider-man 3 movie ticket inside. That's what Sony did just prior to the Spider-man 2 theatrical release.

Skoobooz 07-21-05 05:38 PM

Back in March or April, I was backstage for a show taping at the network for which I work, and the show was having John Dykstra as a guest. As he chatted with one of the producers before the show, he mentioned that he was working on this 2.5 release, and that there would be a few new shots. So it will happen...but it also seems more likely to be prepared now and released closer to Spider-Man 3 (that's my conjecture, at least).

This was my understanding as well. That Raimi would have Spider-Man 2.5 ready to go sometime this year. I was expecting it perhaps by mid year. Actual timetable appears to be much farther off. But no big deal. Definitely be getting it whenever it's released. A tie-in with Spider-Man 3 makes the most sense.

sman113 07-21-05 08:57 PM

or even a tie in with X3 or Ghost Rider next summer. Maybe include a movie ticket to one of those.

Cornelius1047 07-21-05 11:22 PM

You couldn't very well include a ticket to X3, since it's being released by Fox and the Spider-Man movies are released by Sony. I have no idea what studio Ghost Rider is at.

Yeah, I see it on Ebay for less than 10 usually. I'm just going to get it as soon as possible.

steebo777 12-09-05 09:21 AM

Hopefully Spidey 2.5 won't see the light of day. What a waste.

Mr. Cinema 12-09-05 09:29 AM

The Superbit versions can still be had for $9.99 at Best Buy.

John*D 12-09-05 09:50 AM

It'll come either in '07 with part 3 or to tie in or mooch off another MARVEL MOVIE (ie X-men 3 or Ghost Rider in '06)...

Before the SE/SUPERBIT editons were released they said they would ultimately do a 2.5 which is why I only purchased the superbit, knowing any extras from the 2-disc SE would probably be in the 2.5 (either an entire new set or the same crap where they added another disc to the SE of part 1).

The Valeyard 12-09-05 10:20 AM

X-Men 3 is Fox. Spidey 3 is Sony. So no free ticket in that regard. The free X3 ticket will probably be in the FF 2-Discer (also Fox) or the rumored X2.5 DVD.

More than likely, Spidey 2.5 will pop up a few months before Spidey 3 opens (with a free ticket for THAT movie).

Fok 12-09-05 01:45 PM

Don't think I'll upgrade, the version I have now is pretty decent

Davy Mack 12-09-05 03:04 PM

Get the superbit. MUCH better PQ. As a matter of fact, I feel that the standard DVD's PQ is Below average. The conspiracy rumors abounded that they doinked the transfer a bit to clearly show how much better the SUPERBIT version looks.

John*D 12-09-05 05:32 PM

I just looked it up, GHOST RIDER is coming next Spring and its a SONY film. So I would bet that we may get a Spider-Man 2.5 + a free movie ticket to see the show. Otherwise we probably will have to wait for the 3rd Spider-Man.

---------

side note:

I remember a GhostRider cartoon from the '90s that aired along with the HULK cartoon. The movie would be a good time to release that cartoon on dvd. As well all the other MARVEL 'toons with their respective films (X-MEN TAS and SPIDER-MAN TAS, my personal favs, alone w/ HULK and IRON MAN).

Count de Monet 12-09-05 10:52 PM

The A/V quality on the SPIDER-MAN 2 SE, while not as good as the Superbit, isn't as bad as some rather hysterical people have made it out to be. And unlike the first SPIDER-MAN disc, this one actually has some great extras. But if you don't care about extras, you've got the superior Superbit, which has to dump all extras anyway in order to fully earn its marketed brand name (which it hasn't always done.)

And I agree with others, 2.5 will probably come out just in time to hype SPIDER-MAN 3.

I am done waiting. I bought it during this years DDDVD sale. I won't even waste my time with 2.5 when it comes out. They certainly lost a sale on that one! I guess they felt it ready to have a Spider Man 3 teaser ready to put on there as a bonus feature.

Davy Mack 12-09-05 11:44 PM

Hi Count! Honestly the reg. version transfer looked pretty bad to me for a modern big budget film. but what do I know...?

:)

Count de Monet 12-10-05 01:53 AM

Oh, so you actually watched something this time before trashing it? Fair enough. As I said, I agree with you that the A/V quality on the SE is nowhere near as good as the Superbit but I don't think it's unwatchable either. It seems to me that each of the SPIDER-MAN 2 releases serve its intended purpose.

(Insert cynical $ony-cash-grab comment here.) :)

I think it's funny (and appropriate) that they called this Spider-Man 2.1 instead of 2.5 like they did with X-Men. It might even be more like Spider-Man 2.0001, but if it's 2 discs, hopefully there'll be enough new bonus material to make it worth buying.

Fincher Fan 01-25-07 10:33 PM

2.1 actually makes more sense than 2.5. That aside, I held off buying the current Spider-Man 2 DVD in anticipation of this, although it is a bit DOA. Instead I'll pick up the inevitable boxset that will be released when 3 hits DVD.
