Sealab 2021 - MASSIVE Adult Swim News: Sealab, Brak, Space Ghost, Aqua Teen, Birdman, Venture Bros.!
Posted by David Lambert
6/15/2004

We've gotten e-mails from several of our readers - such as Whitney Gunter and Jason O'Malley; thanks! - that the Adult Swim programming block on Cartoon Network had shown a card this past Sunday night, just before The Brak Show aired. It had a rundown of the upcoming DVD release schedule for the Adult Swim shows. Thanks to a link supplied by "The Drizzle" at ToonZone.net, we were able to get the actual layout of the card, as reproduced by a person who calls themselves "Goz" at the Adult Swim Message Boards. Everybody say "Thanks, Goz!":
The good news for Sealab 2021 fans is that you get a Volume 2 release this winter, and Volume 3 next Summer! This will please a lot of our readers, who just a few months ago were quite upset that Sealab wasn't even on the RADAR (or should it be SONAR?) scope!

Fans of The Brak Show will also jump for joy, knowing that he's on-the-way for the Winter '04 timeframe as well. Harvey Birdman, Attorney-At-Law makes his case next Spring. And The Venture Bros. make their heroic DVD entrance in the Fall 2005 era. Long-range plans indeed, and possibly open to change while we wait. Oh, and speaking of changed plans...

What's extremely interesting about this is the change in plans it represents when compared to an April report from IGN FilmForce. Then, the plans for November were that Aqua Teen Hunger Force - Volume 3 and Space Ghost Coast To Coast - Volume 2 would show up in time for holiday gift-giving. Now it looks like the plans have clearly changed for ATHF - V3, as it gets put on the back burner until a year from now!

Even more confusing is that SGC2C - V2 isn't even mentioned on this list, but the 3rd Volume is planned to hit in time for the Spring thaw, and Volume 4 is in-the-pipe as well. So, where did Volume 2 go? Why isn't it on that card? Hmmm...well, let's think for a minute: technically "November 2004" is part of the "Fall '04" timeframe, and "Winter '04" is from Dec. 21, 2004 to March 20, 2005. So perhaps Brak and Sealab V2 will actually hit after the first of the year, maybe as late as February. We don't know; we're just speculating. We'll try to dig into this with Warner Home Video, who distributes the Adult Swim line-up on DVD. Another question we'll ask about SGC2C - V2 is: "will a second 'Swim' title still accompany it?" We don't know...yet. We'll certainly be looking into this whole business, though!

I recently discovered Harvey Birdman - I will definitely pick up this DVD - judging by the episode descriptions of the 1st season, they sound hilarious.

Any word on Mission Hill, which sometimes airs on the Sunday Adult Swim? It's owned by Castle Rock, a division of Warner Brothers so Cartoon Network should have the rights to it.

Looks like they're going the multi-volume route for Brak instead of releasing the whole series in one fell swoop. Disappointing, really.

They could have easily fit 3 seasons of Sealab 2021 on 2 discs... I won't buy any of them b/c it's ridiculous to put only like 13 11min episodes on 2 dvd's and charge 30 bucks for it.

I think your math is a bit off. 13 episodes of 11 minutes is 143 minutes, or well over two hours. Thirty dollars is the going MSRP for new movies. Since many movies are under 143 minutes, you're getting the same amount of entertainment (or more) at the same price.

Besides, Aqua Teen's first volume had 16 episodes, not 13. Not sure if that will change things in future volumes. But I don't know what price you are expecting.

Every source I've seen (including TVShowsOnDVD) is listing 13 episodes for the Sealab set. Strictly speaking it shouldn't even be that many since the Sealab set is being billed as "Season One" (which comprised seven episodes altogether, ten if you include the three pilots); 13 episodes takes us three episodes into the second season. I wish they'd come up with some sort of semi-consistent release scheme for these sets.

Exactly what I was wondering!

And I would like to see Baby Blues on DVD as well, along with Mission Hill and Oblongs and Home Movies. I am glad to see the AS originals hitting DVD, but in the interim time of waiting, how about some series sets on these other shows?

But where is Cartoon Planet?

Can't wait for Sealab. I honestly think they're creating some of the greatest surrealist theater we'll ever see.

I kind of agree, but the price point is usually not much more than a single disc would have been.

However, the transfers on these discs are pristine. The bitrate must be through the roof.

I was under the impression that they were not going to release the rest of the SG:C2C volumes. What great great great news! I hope they have commentaries on all the episodes.

Yes! Thanks for the info!
