Danger: Diabolik dvd--Canceled?

My pre-order for Danger: Diabolik has been removed at DDD and replaced simply with "backordered". Has this release been canceled by Paramount?

I was really looking forward to this release with it being OOP for so long.

Man, I hope not.

I got a message from DVD Empire over a month ago that is was taken off the schedule.

In this post:

The poster indicates that he spoke with Paramount and they are going to add more to the release and make it an SE, but no word yet on when it will be released. So apparently good and bad news (good for the SE, bad for the wait).

The Exister 05-18-04 03:18 PM

I can wait if that's the case.

I always thought this film deserved a deluxe treatment.

Great!

I want a DVD Savant commentary! Hey, it's already happening with Gun Crazy...

Add the MST3K version on a second disc, and I'm sold.

I'm sold either way, but that would be one of the best extras ever. :eyebrow:

I wonder how hard would it be to acquire the MST3K commentary? Is it Universal who owns that show?

Even if tehy didn't get the MST3K thing, they could get Mike Nelson and the Actors to make fun of it on a NEW commentay...

You couldn't do it as a commentary, as 'MST3K' always edited the movies down to fit their slots (it also helped make the movies that much worse); the MST discs that have "uncut" movies as well always do them as flippers, so you could do that or just have a seperate disc.

The shame is, if the movie gets a real release, that means the MST version will probably never get an official release, and that's too bad, since it's the final episode and all...

Universal owns the movie; I believe that Best Brains International still holds the rights to the show and, either way, Rhino owns the rights to distribute the DVDs.

They did just that on the recent release of REEFER MADNESS and it was hilarious!

I'm realy glad this is not cancelled after all, I've been looking forward to this one for a long time.

That's good as far as I'm concerned.

Recent update:

http://www.mhvf.net/forum/euro/posts/49774.html

Tim Lucas of Video Watchdog wrote:

... it was delayed by the folks at American Zoetrope (particularly Roman Coppola and Kim Aubry) who saw the value of the movie and recommended that Paramount stop their plans for a no-frills release and beef it up properly.
Lucas (an authority on the life and work of Mario Bava) also notes that he recorded an unrehearsed commentary with Diabolik star John Phillip Law. Nothing in the post about a definitive release date, though, unless I missed it.

wow! sounds like it will be worth the wait! thanks for the news, obscurelabel!

Glenn Erikson's (DVD Savant) article on Danger: Diabolik is here:

http://www.dvdtalk.com/dvdsavant/s71diabolik.html

and discusses a revised (and inferior) soundtrack with some redubbed voices and different volume levels for the score. This is the track that was used on the Paramount laserdisk.

Tim Lucas confirms that the upcoming DVD will have the original soundtrack (with the character's name pronounced DYE-abolik, not DEE-abolik as in the redone track).

More information here:

There had been concerns expressed that the original soundtrack did not exist or couldn't be used for legal reasons. Looks as if we will be getting the superior version.

whew! glad to see that this is an old thread that has been bumped up. when i first saw the thread title i thought this title had been delayed yet again.

Seashellz 06-03-05 01:28 PM

I seem to recall reading somewhere that this film is actually shot in 'scope-though even though the laserdisc was in 1:85.

I started watching it last night. The film was shot in 35 mm spherical (non-anamorphic) for exhibition in anywhere from 1.66:1 (preferred European AR) to 1.85:1 (preferred American AR) ratios. As a lot of the picture is shot through a fish-eye lens (which is itself a form of anamorphics), the end result is a picture that actually looks wider than it is (and also makes you feel slightly stoned, which is soooooooooooo sixties). The use of Technicolor is simply brilliant. Please read what DVD Savant has to say about the extras: They are beyond imagining.

So I didn't need to roll this blunt before watching afterall? Oh well, might as well spark it up , now.

Happy to finally be adding this to my Bava section of the library.
