Worst English Translation in Subtitles

I was watching Shaolin Soccer Last night and the subtitle translations were so bad! It gave me a headache having to compensate for the misspellings and horribly incorrect grammar. Who exactly do they get to translate these movies? I would think you would need somewhat of a grasp of the English Language. Thank God my wife speaks Cantonese.

The funniest translation, which really doesnt fall under bad grammar or misspelling, just something that is difficult to convey in English I guess was Lead Vest (I think that was his name) My wife told me that it translates more into, Someone who is now to heavy to fly or defy gravity, something like that.

What is the worst English Translated Subtitles you have ever had to struggle through?

The English subtitles in Brotherhood of the Wolf 1-disc U.S. version is pretty bad. "And you knew nothing of him!"

Kill Bill Vol. 2. But then again, the real translation would've been too offensive to all the increasingly sensitive people.

I have to agree on that Shaolin Soccer one. Saw it last year on DVD and the English is beyond bad.

I recently learned who translated the DVD...

Absolutely horrid English dub track. I was raving about the movie to a good friend of mine. What did he do? He ended up renting the DVD and it defaults to the english dub track. Totally ruined the film for him. Fronsac's voice in the dub makes him sound like he's 70 years old.

Not so much a bad grammatical translation - but I find it funny when some Hong Kong movies clear have someone saying F*** in english and they replace it with "damn" in the subtitles.

One specific example is in 2000 A.D. - one guy's saying "I'll f***ing kill you" in English and the subtitles right below say "I'll damn well kill you".

Years of watching subtitled HK films have almost made me immune to bad subtitles. But still, here are a few classics:

"The reproductive organ was bursted by bullet" (Naked Killer)

"He is executed to death just now" (Last Hero in China)

"I'm not Jesus Christ, I'm Bunny" (Double Trouble)

"God! I've got bruise. Insert! (Saviour of the Soul)

"The wolves will burst your tits this time!" (Naked Killer)

"Don't tell any that I have high anxiety or I'll beat you up!" (Prison on Fire)

"Miss, a couple of basters are following me" (Tiger on Beat)

"Check if there is a hole in my underpant" " No I saw a vomiting crab" (Full Contact)

(these are based on original English translations seen in burned in subs on original theatrical prints that may have been changed in recent DVD releases)

Bad subs are sometimes half the fun of watching movies.

Yes, the subs on those HK movies are amazing. Usually you get the drift, bu sometimes you just stare and wonder what it was supposed to be.

The strange thing is, watch enough of them, and you understand more and more , and notice the strangeness less and less - which is fine as long as I don't suddenly start talking like HK subtitles!

Very similar, but mine has the DTS symbol on the lower left hand corner. The clamshell has the DVD video on the lower right just like your pic, but the slipcase does not.

You think the subtitles are bad, try listening to the dub. It's from the same awful translation. It's bad enough reading something like that in text, but even worse listening to someone speak it aloud.

I liked how the Shaolin Soccer DVD's subs consistently used "blad" instead of "bald".

Oh, and:

Never ever pick up the edited version of "Y Tu Mama Tambien." I did by accident and hated it! I have an extremely limited Spanish vocabulary and could tell that what they where saying and the story line itself did not match up with the subtitles.
