King of New York

Anyone pick up this new release today?

http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=10052

Remarkably, I've never seen this film. How bad was the original dvd release?

good grief - what to buy after work today:

Master and Commander
Step into Liquid

and now this.... I need another job.

The DVD review states that the film was given an X-rating and trimmed, this wasn't the case, the filmmakers appealed this rating and won, resulting in no footage trimmed or lost.

I have them both, though I haven't opened the new one yet. The original disc was non-anamorphic, but from what I remember it was OK as far as those transfers go. Dolby Pro Logic only on that as well. I think I paid less than $10 for it a while ago, but of course you can get this new 2-disc SE for almost the same price. I'm hoping to see/hear a nice upgrade when I get to the new disc.

I just picked this up as a blind buy as part of the Circuit City $9.99 sale.

... am I the only one disappointed (and somewhat surprised) that this was re-released just 2 months ago and is NOT Anamorphic?

Many of the early DVDs were non-anamorphic, but I have seen very few releases recently that have not been anamorphic. I have replaced many of my non-anamorphic DVDs with re-releases. I am torn as to whether I should keep this one or return it.

The 2-disc SE with the slipcover that was released on 4/20 is most certainly anamorphic.

Okay, I'll take your word for it. I swear I have read every word on the cover, and I could not find anywhere where it said Anamorphic or Enhanced.

I think dvdtalk's review of it mentioned it was anamorphic as well.

Yep I hear you. I don't think all the studios put those notes on the packaging. A lot of the smaller companies just put "letterbox" or "widescreen" on the packaging and you gotta take your chances on anamorphic, unless you can find a knowledgable review online somewhere.

The commentary on this is great. None of that hollywood kissup stuff from Abel Ferrara. He's going off on everyone, including himself. When something is great, he says so, and when something is crap, he doesn't hesitate for a second to call it out.

if not mistaken i believe BB will have this one on sale for 2 for $20 next week--I may pick this up.

Great movie and as someone else pointed out it has a very entertaining audio commentry.

I love how Aristan puts out special editions for cheap.

It was on sale at Target for $10 a couple of weeks ago. I am still waiting for my "Pending" one from DDD's summer sale 3 months ago, which would end up costing 8.99 or something or I would have bought it there. I own the previous release and it was pretty good, but I really like the movie, so I'm prejudiced. One odd thing I noticed was that some of them had the plastic outer sleeve and were marked as "Limited Edition 2-Disc", the others had no sleeve and were marked as "Special Edition 2-disc." I don't think there were any other differences. There were about half of each kind and they were both on sale for $10. I will probably pick one up for $10 if they are on sale and cancel my DDD order.

It is in the 2 for $20 sale @ Best Buy this week, and the only difference between the 2 mentioned above is the slip sleeve. The one with it was the original "Limited" release and the lesser attractive Red cover is the one we'll be seeing from now on. No actual content was changed though.

I just picked it today along with hoffa.

Am I the only one who thought this movie was a piece of trash? I usually like gangster films but this seemed to go nowhere, misused it's cast, and had the worst cocaine scenes I've ever seen. Watch them shovel stuff into their nose and it all falls out. God.
