Schindler's List Single Disc?

I was just looking over the press sheet for Schindler's List and it says it's a single disc.

I'm a little worried about the quality, now considering the DTS track, the fact that the film is 3 hours and 16 minutes long and that the extras bring all of the video material up to 4 hours and 45 minutes.

That's a lot of stuff for a single disc.

So what's the bitrate going to be on this bad boy?

Just disappointing. There was talk for awhile about it being two discs, then a DVD-18 (two sided), but now it's just a DVD-9.

I haven't seen any reviews yet, but we'll have to see.

This thread says it's a DVD-18, so it's not that bad.

Did you source explicitly mention it's a DVD-9?

It doesn't say one way or the other, but it shows the disc and it has disc art.

So that pretty much means that it won't be dual-sided.

I can't imagine them putting ALL of that material on one side of a disc - but this is Universal we're talking about.

For what it's worth, Columbia House has it listed as a 2-disc set. They're not exactly a bastion of reliability, but it's something to hope for. I don't care if there are any extras, just pleeease don't make it a DVD-18.

btw dvdfile reports the disc will include a new 77-minute documentary "Voices From the List" - so the documentary looks like it will be pretty comprehensive.

There have been rumors that it would be a DVD-18, but since it's announcement, I've also heard it'll be a two-disc set. So there's a bit of confusion.

I was under the assumption that that doc only came with the deluxe edition set.

Edit: Nevermind, I was wrong.

Kicking off today's news is the announcement long expected, the last of Steven Spielberg's major works not yet released on DVD, the Oscar-winning epic Schindler's List. The news is good for fans of the film but maybe not so good for those expecting a lavish, feature-packed set brimming with extras. Three versions will be released on March 9th - 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and 4:3 open matte versions, plus a collector's gift set that includes the widescreen edition of the film. Both the widescreen and full screen versions are two-disc sets that include the 196-minute theatrical cut of the film, with Dolby Digital and DTS tracks, plus the featurettes "Voices From the List" and "Behind the Shoah Foundation With Steven Spielberg," production notes and trailers. As of now, no other extras have been announced. The gift set also includes the book Schindler’s List: Images of the Steven Spielberg Film the CD Soundtrack, a Senitype and Certificate of Authenticity. Retail is only $19.95 for the two-disc versions, and $79.95 for the box.
There is also this being released at the same time:

A companion piece to the March 3rd DVD release of Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List, Universal Studios Home Video will also release the Spielberg and Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation series Broken Silence, five historical films about human courage, heroism and triumph among the deepest of adversity during World War II. The films are: Some Who Lived, Hell On Earth, Eyes Of The Holocaust, I Remember and Children From the Abyss, all produced by Academy Award winner James Moll (director of The Last Days) and directed by distinguished filmmakers from Argentina, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Russia. each is presented in an aspect ratio of 4:3 with their native soundtracks in Dolby 2.0 stereo. There are no additional extras aside from historical notes included. Retail is set at $26.95.

Retail is $26.98 for the 2-disc set(s), not $19.95.

I think this retailer press sheet has gotten confused, then.

Obviously this has to be on more than a single DVD-9 platter. Perhaps they were leaning towards a DVD-18 and then decided on two DVD-9s.

Today I received an order sheet and there are actually five different versions:

1) Two-Disc Widescreen
2) Two-Disc Full Frame
3) Single-Disc Widescreen
4) Single-Disc Full Frame
5) Collector's Boxed Set (Two Discs, one of which is the soundtrack).

Can Universal *not* screw a major release from a major director up? They messed up Jaws by cutting the doc, then E.T. was horribly packaged, then they messed up the framing with the Back to the Future WS box... it just never ends.

I hope their new ownership shakes things up a little over in the HV division.

The Universal web site only lists the single disc, but retailers should have either version up for pre-order soon. They have different UPCs, so there shouldn't be a mix-up.

I thought this was going to be stocked with extras? Supposedly that was what was taking so long. This is what the wait was for...two documentaries?

I no longer buy that excuse any longer. We heard the same for Indiana Jones. I bet Star Wars will be the same.

I haven't seen any reviews yet - pre-books for retailers were due in two weeks ago, and they listed both single and double disc sets (in addition to the Collector's box).
