^Isn't that the Australian movie about the retarded couple that has a baby?

I haven't seen the X version yet but from what I understand, the majority if not all the extra footage is hardcore pornography(ie penetration) shot by a different director with different actors.

Could this G-RATED Australian drama set in the early 1900's be the straw that finally breaks the back of those Blue underground completists who swear they'll buy every BU release?

I just can't see this one sitting next to EMANUELLE IN AMERICA in most gorehound collections. Still, it will probably be one of BU's better selling titles, but for a whole different audience rather than the usual fans. Not that gorehounds can't enjoy a slow-moving women's flick period drama from down-under, but I have a feeling the percentage that would is quite low. Maybe BU could have started a sub-label called DOWN UNDERGROUND for their specialty Aussie titles.

then how is it relavant to the story and is it at all purposeful?

When is hardcore porn ever really relevant to any story?

And as far as 'purposeful' goes, I guess that just depends on how much titillation you want out of your exploitation movies. I doubt any of the hardcore moments have any message or symbolism or even character development. It's there for one 'purpose' - to get you off. Take it or leave it.

Sorry, that straw is too weak to even scratch my back. Consider this title just another one of many that form my complete BU collection...or will soon anyway. But again...it's not just because I support BU. I happen to be a huge Judy Davis whore so it's a no-brainer. I can't help it, I'm easy.

That would be the wrong section/genre...so no, it will not be next to it. Not even on the same freakin' shelf.:p

BU is not a gorehound magnet. Bu does not = gore. Lower in sales....maybe, sure. I love this road, you know, the one less traveled.:D

I am fully aware BU is not strictly for gorehounds. I guess that was the wrong choice of words. However, any fan of the label will have to admit that MY BRILLIANT CAREER is a pretty huge step away from anything else they have ever released and is a pretty big step away from the image they created of themselves as seeking out obscure and underground cult flicks to release. All the power to them for trying to branch out to make more money, but titles like this will definitely not do that well with their usually devoted audience. Just look at the lackluster response on the various genre forums to the ALAN CLARKE box set - there was hardly any discussion of it at all. And the ALAN CLARKE box at least had some sort of tenuous appeal to the regular BU audience because of the gritty nature of the films. Yes, MY BRILLIANT CAREER is a new avenue down a road less traveled and that's all good. But will you still buy their titles when they start releasing Britney Spears cartoons and Tommy the Train programs? I already know you'll say yes, gut! :-D

And just so you don't think I imagined BU's original motto, here is a link to it right off their site:

Sorry if this had been posted but I just noticed a little more info on Fire and Ice. Holy shit! Both the movie and the documentary!

"FIRE AND ICE / FRAZETTA: PAINTING WITH FIRE
(2-Disc - 20,000 Limited Edition)
This 2 Disc Limited Edition includes the 2003 feature length documentary “Frazetta: Painting With Fire” directed by Lance Laspina. The documentary features Frank Frazetta, Ralph Bakshi, Neal Adams, Bernie Wrightson, and many more

so are a few more of their titles. It's no huge shock for me. I'm not expecting a slit throat or sliced off nipples or even racial violence every damn time a BU dvd gets released. I for one am content with seeing a mixed bag-o-treats....and with that it's all just a personal taste thing. I think about what they are releasing next/now for 10 seconds and then I'm over it. Next step...add the title to my library.

Then you would be wrong brother....you obviously don't know my taste or my library building habits. No worries....neither does anyone else:lol:. I'll tell you what. When BU starts hitting foulballs and striking out....I'll give a shout out. Until then, I'll be buying BU titles as needed.:D

Me neither, friend. I have quite an eclectic taste in films myself. Just that there are no sliced off nipples in a movie doesn't mean that I won't buy such a movie. I actually like quite a lot of movies without sliced off nipples, believe it or not. I currently have about 2,200 DVD's and I can only think of maybe one or two of them that feature sliced off nipples. I have those categorized in the sliced off nipples section. I keep waiting to add more, but it's a misunderstood genre and doesn't get the respect it deserves. BU definitely needs to release more sliced off nipple movies.

You can say practically every DVD company releases a "mixed bag-o-treats" every month. Anchor Bay, Media Blasters, Criterion ("Armageddon" anyone?), plus all the major studios are releasing a mixed bag-o-treats every month. So what? I surely don't buy every Fox title that comes out just because it's a mixed bag-o-treats. You would end up buying every DVD ever released. Obviously, Blue Underground isn't as generic as most labels, but if you look at their site intro, you will see they did tout themselves as a label devoted to grindhouse type films (movies shown at "decrepit movie theaters in an unsavory part of town that you may not get out of alive" - movies featuring "psychopaths, cops, robbers, zombies, cannibals, madmen, strange women and more, with an audience often comprised of the same.") I don't think MY BRILLIANT CAREER ever showed in a 'decrepit movie theater in an unsavory part of town" that you may get killed at, but maybe I was seeing something else at the time. Don't get me wrong, I've said all along that it's OK that BU is widening its horizons with stuff like MBC. If they can make money on such titles to finance other cool films, that's all good. But they will need to re-vamp their website if they continue down that path. And as soon as they release Tommy The Train, I'm jumping ship.

prince_of_saturn 03-19-05 01:49 AM

I tried to buy every Anchor Bay, but after getting stucked with movies that I dozed off on, TENDER MERCIES, FRANCES, NOT QUITE PARADISE, STAR CRYSTAL, ACCIDENTS, TILL DEATH DO US APART, and now with recent announcements of workout videos, WITHOUT A TRACE, STONE BOY, SILK STALKINGS, RENEGADES, MAX DUGAN RETURNS, BYE BYE LOVE and MR ROGERS, I decided to STOP buying every Anchor Bay DVD and use that money now on MONDO MACABRO , Synapse, Shriek Show, Blue Underground , etc. I wasn't too excitied about ALAN CLARKE BOX SET, only watched halfway through it, and so far, been disappointed on my purchase of LOVELESS, I will give Blue Underground release of this a chance however, so I do hope it DOES have cult potential or something to satisfy my cult appetite.

Nor me either!...now on the other hand..once Fire & Ice,Bird With A Crystal Plummage SE and The Blind Dead Boxset are released, i won't be able to get my money out my pocket quick enough!! :)

Darryl 03-19-05 06:45 AM

I'm not a fan of MY BRILLIANT CAREER, nor do I need every BU title produced (although I have a fair share of BU DVDs). As an indie label, they will sell more copies of this disc than many of their lesser known films. In my opinion, it's a smart move since the money generated on a more mainstream title will allow the company to take chances on films that will be geared to dedicated BU buyers.

It's not, it's considered the inferior version of the film, but there are some people who'd scream bloody murder if BU didn't present the longest, goriest, most exploitative cut of a movie available.

Then the people at BU need to get started on The Killer is Still Amongst Us, Delirium (1972), and Giallo a Venezia.

Is One Dark Night no longer coming from Blue Underground? It's no longer on their Future list...

Nope, not unless you want the porn footage.

Giles 04-26-05 09:41 AM

so who's actually seen the XXX version of 9 Women - I've finally rented the Director's cut of the film from Netflix, and gathering from Jess Franco interview, the insert footage must stand out like a sore thumb (no pun intended).

TomOpus 07-14-05 12:07 AM

Check out information regarding Fire and Ice in this thread.

prince_of_saturn 07-14-05 03:21 AM

Is any of their Ausssie films STARSTRUCK and NEWSFRONT worth a blind but. I was really bored to death with MY BRILLIANT CAREER!

Sunday Morning 07-14-05 09:58 PM

One Dark Night is no longer coming out via Blue Underground but I believe Media Blasters might.
