Sonatine buena vista DVD

Cduniverse has Takeshi Kitano's Sonatine DVD listed as coming out on January 13th
http://www.cduniverse.com/productinf...cart=170476375

It lists the film as being full fram 1.33:1. Has anyone seen any other information or a review for this DVD that might have it listed otherwise? Thanks!

It's listed at other etailers as full frame as well. Looks like the letterboxed R0 Panorama Entertainment version is still the best available for non-Japanese speakers.

How does Sonatine compare with Fireworks? I heard Fireworks was much better.

i enjoy sonatine alot more than fireworks. i think fireworks has some beautiful moments in it, but overall it'd be my 3rd or 4th fav. beat movie. sonatine being my fav. it was just more interesting story and character wise for me. but unfortunately the hk dvd and the reg2 uk dvd use different subs than the vhs copy i'm used to, and the subs aren't as good on either of those dvd's. so hopefully this guy will have the subs im used too. i don't remeber who put out the vhs tape, but it was before the rolling thunder release. it may have been a boot. not sure. but the subs were great.

Sonatine is my favorite as well. Hana bi is great too but Sonatine was the first move of Kitano's that I saw and I've always liked it the most. Actually Kikujiro might be my 2nd fave. I really wish I could find an early review or more info on this DVD though.

If the DVD really is pan and scanned I would pass on it.

At some point there WILL be a decent release of Sonatine here.

What's up with this?

Will Sonatine still be sold seperately?

I was wondering about that too. I hope they will be available separately, because I really want to get SONATINE and I already have the R2 ZATOICHI DVD. Then again, if the price is reasonable, I guess I can double dip on ZATOICHI (especially if it has extras, because the ones on the R2 disc don't have English subs)

BTW, from the looks of the right side background, it seems that they will be trying to market this to KILL BILL fans.

The retail is the regular $29.99 that Buena Vista charges, so around $20 for 2 films sounds good to me. Now all we have to do is pray that they don't screw it up

But what gets me is the "Also, First time on DVD".

Is this the "New and Improved" version of Sonatine?

Sonatine has never been released on DVD in the USA by Miramax (I assume there are R0 imports) so it's the "First Time On DVD" for that perticular release. They could have worded it better I guess

Yeah, it's been delayed once or twice, but this will be the first R1 DVD release of SONATINE (it was previously available in the US on VHS and laserdisc though).

Who knows if it will really be 1.33 full frame. The CD Universe listing that started this post would have been for the Jan. 2004 release that had been postponed-- probably to ride Zatoichi's coat tails. But, we shall see if Miramax will treat this release right... I have not found a site that is selling Kitano's Zatoichi and the NEW Sonatine release for pre-order.
