Yes, but they have it in seclusion, so that it doesn't infect any other movies.
Hmmm....I take it you don't like the film? &nbsp I guess I'm in the minority here.

Nope, you're not! :)

Beautifully shot film with an equally beautiful score...I'd love a nice anamorphic DVD with that music re-mixed into 5.1!

Yea, some scenes were filmed at the beautiful Trunk Bay on the island of St. John.

 &nbsp Hearing a 5.1 remix of Vangelis's score would be awesome.

Go to this link: http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/222281

It's an Australian site, so if you've got a multi-region player you can buy their Region 4 version, which is both Anamorphic and Dolby Digital 5.1. I have a copy and the transfer is pretty good.

Enjoy...

the theatrical 70mm prints with 6-track sound were awesome, can't wait to hear this again as such when the DVD eventually gets released. It's also too early to see what version Paramount Home video will release since Ridley Scott's films seem to exist in multiple alternate cuts: (i.e, Alien, Legend, Blade Runner). The Japanese laserdisc of 1492 I own is a longer cut of the film, with a little more character exposition, and R-rated violence that was cut for the US 'PG-13' rated version.

There is an ntsc R3 Korean dvd too. Anamorphic.

Interestingly enough, the audio on that version is listed as DD 2.0. Has anyone made a comparison between this and the Australion (DD 5.1) version (both on the audio and the anamorphic video quality)?

Timemeddler, how good is "pretty good?"

Timemeddler 10-21-03 05:27 PM

I hadn't watched it in a while, so that was just my way of saying that it's worth buying. However, as you have asked for a specific evaluation of the disc, I have just popped it into my machine and I can tell you that it really is a very good transfer. Picture quality is crisp and vibrant (anamorphic too) and the DD 5.1 soundtrack is also very good. BUY IT!!!!!!!!

Has Paramount made any inkling of an announcement of a R1 release? I know it wasn't the biggest hit and I'm not expecting any special features other than maybe the trailer (which was cool) but come on already!

Wow, never knew this. I really hope that this version is on the R1 DVD when released. Do any of the other region DVDs have this cut?

dvd_luver 06-03-05 11:53 AM

Will it ever be released on region 1 in any kind of way? That's the real question, hopefully Ridley Scott is creating a Directors Cut of the film for release someday, that would at least make the long wait for this dvd seem less criminal. Either way, it's completely a mystery as to why Paramount Pictures hasn't released 1492: Conquest Of Paradise on dvd yet stateside. Alot of people would want to buy this, and definitly fans of Ridley Scott. This is a long, long overdue dvd release.

E Unit 06-03-05 07:21 PM

thedigitalbits had an interview I'd say about a year ago with people at Paramount that listed 1492 as tentative for 4th quarter 2005 or in 2006. Since Ridley is re-releasing SE's of just about all his stuff, I'd say he'd do it for this one as well. I have the Korean dvd which unfortunately is only in 2.0, but it does have the cd of the soundtrack. I guess it's the international version of the film which seems to have about 5 short extra scenes, but does anyone know if this is the extent of the addtional scenes that were cut so it could be PG-13 here in the states? I have the laserdisc and there is a picture on the back the shows Sigourney Weaver in a garden. I don't recall anything like that in either version of the movie.

dvd_luver 06-04-05 11:23 AM

I went crazy once on e-bay and bought tons of other editions of 1492: Conquest Of Paradise on dvd, I have the Korean version you are referring to. The general artwork aside (reads 1492: Christophe Colomb on both disc and dvd cover, Korea isn't France you know, :)) having Vangelis soundtrack with the film is surely nice. That soundtrack is just about as incredible as the film itself, so it makes it an ok deal. To my knowledge there was tons of footage cut from both the International cut and the US theatrical cut, which would make a Director's cut from Ridely Scott sound very intruiging and a worthy purchase on dvd for any film fanatic. So if this is to ever be released on dvd by Paramount, I am sure people would like to have a Directors Cut like Ridley Scott did with Legend.

As iI recall, and since I haven't seen the US theatical cut in quite some time, one deleted scene (from the US cut) is
Spoiler:
the burial of one Columbus' men, who is bitten by a snake. The final shot of the deceased, is a haunting image of his ghostly white face as the dirt covers it.

violence that was cut includes
- the public burnings are more explicit and prolonged
- the gun shot blast to the head/helmet is more graphic and bloody
- a vicious stabbing near the end of the film features more blood.

dvd_luver 06-04-05 03:12 PM

Right, also there are more scenes that were deleted from the US theatrical cut of the movie, and are featured on the international cut of the film.

Some scenes that were cut, include -

There is a scene where Christopher Columbus sits down to talk to his wife and tells her it could be years before he comes back to see her again, Columbus is about to embark on his second expedition back to the New World.

Christopher Columbus and his workers are looking for gold on the islands and are now leaving in the rain, when one of his men (Alonso) are bit by a deadly snake, exposing the harsh dangers the New World brings.

There is another scene when Chistopher Columbus and his men settle into the New World, where they talk and joke around about the harvest of food in the New World, while they eat dinner.

Then there are a few more scenes extended like you said with more violence, and Indians walking around with Vangelis excellent music in the backround.

dvd_luver 06-04-05 05:39 PM

Unlikely, but has this film been mentioned for a Criterion Collection release? This is a highly artistic film, and it's the kind of movie that Criterion Collection likes. Maybe they could buy the rights from Paramount and release it on dvd.
