Weird Science Reunion Edition missing audio??

Hi, this is totally bizarre. But the scene where Gary and Wyatt are deciding to give Lisa big honkers or not is missing audio (Gary is supposed to say "bigger tits" or something like that). You can see Gary's lips move but nothing is heard. Also when Gary is saying "Anything bigger then a handful, your risking a sprained thumb", I remember there being more lines spoken from Gary before he said this. Can someone who has both versions of this DVD confirm this?? Chapter 3:35

If this is confirmed then this sucks big time.

Thanks.

The Maniac 09-05-03 02:03 AM

wasnt this discussed in a earlier thread?

BuddyRevell 09-05-03 11:51 AM

If this was discussed i'm very sorry. Did a search under "Weird Science" and nothing came up. Please link the thread if any. Anyone have any info on this??

pdjennings 09-05-03 12:56 PM

The "bigger tits" line is later in the movie when the same scene is being played out with Robert Downey Jr & that other guy.

BuddyRevell 09-05-03 01:02 PM

That is true, but not the scene I'm talking about. It's Gary that says something like that.

harpo787 09-05-03 01:22 PM

Having just watched this last night, I didn't recognize any audio problems...I'll double check to be sure.

I do remember watching ALL THOSE EXTRA FEATURES (ie: the trailer), and there was a line about breasts in the trailer that was not used in the film. I wonder if that's the removed dialogue, but they forgot to remove the visual part as well as the audio?

Again, I'll do a double check.

BuddyRevell 09-05-03 01:45 PM

Ok here's how one of the missing dialogues is supposed to be....

'If there's one thing I know, it's female stats. Anything bigger than a handful, your risking a sprained thumb'.

In this Reunion Edition Gary ONLY says..."Anything bigger than a handful, your risking a sprained thumb".

Universal totally goofed.

canonelan2 09-05-03 02:49 PM

It's not "Anything bigger than a handful, you're risking a sprained thumb."

it's...

"Anything bigger than a handful, you're risking a sprained tongue."

BuddyRevell 09-05-03 03:16 PM

Thanks for the correction. I always didn't quite know exactly what he said.

BuddyRevell 09-05-03 10:37 PM

Anybody else confirm this? Does anyone care that this DVD is missing dialogue??

DVDude! 09-05-03 11:16 PM

Yes, I care. I've been monitoring this thread since it began. I don't yet own the new one (Columbia House for me in December), but I traded in my old Weird Science last week.

It's a trade off, I guess. Correct soundtrack vs. missing line. Sucks.

prp2 09-05-03 11:23 PM

I confirmed it too, but having not seen the film in quite a while I can't recall what the original line was supposed to be. But I, like harpo, didn't notice any missing audio cues and the editing was timed up with the line as spoken, so...unless they partially cut that scene I don't see anything wrong.

DarthVong 09-05-03 11:39 PM

I thought Anthony Michael Hall said something (about bigger boobs) before the line also.....but I could be wrong.

This is like the Ferris Beuller thread all over again...

Oh good, I was getting worried that no one was going to correct that.

it was my pleasure.

jdugger2 09-07-03 01:38 PM

It is missing audio.

Gary says, "Very nice." when they are looking at the breasts on the computer. Then when Wyatt makes them bigger, Gary eithers moans or says no (he voices some displeasure) and says,
"Wyatt, if there's anything I know it's female stats. Anything bigger than a handful, you're risking a sprang tounge."

You can clearly see Gary's mouth saying "Very nice."

Also the package claims original theatrical music including Roy Orbison. But it's Van Halen's cover of "Pretty Woman" that's been added in, not Roy Orbison.

Universal really ****ed up this time. No documentaries or deleted scenes (even the TV scenes would have been nice.), missing audio. Are they really that stupid?

BuddyRevell 09-07-03 01:59 PM

Thanks Jdugger2!

Finally a solid answer. What the hellio was Universal thinking? Wish I would've hung on to my original DVD. Damn them!

MJKTool 09-07-03 02:46 PM

To each their own, I am perfectly happy with this new anamorphic DVD.

DavidH 09-07-03 05:07 PM

Universal Studios = no quality control. Proven over and over again.

Jah-Wren Ryel 09-07-03 05:34 PM

Do the subs have the missing dialog?

Brain Stew 09-07-03 05:50 PM

But does it have an insert?

Mickey 09-07-03 06:30 PM

nope no insert. Now how about the TV series on DVD!!

I thought that the Van Halen cover was the version used in the theatrical release.

I don't really care for the film but I love the series. I would pick it up the day it's released.

TheKing 09-07-03 10:28 PM

The missing lines are in the English Captions. Although the captions are missing a few lines that are said on screen, which is odd.

malapane 09-08-03 09:35 AM

I too confirm the missing dialog. As already said. You can see his mouth move when we should be hearing him say "very nice" Although You cannot visually tell the female stats part is missing, the section does sound odd.

Has anyone watched Sixteen Candles yet? I wonder if I spotted a potential problem on that one too. The part where Jake is looking over his house after the partygoers have destroyed it. As he stands there looking around you can see his mouth move, but nothing is heard. I did not check the subtitles, but I will later today. The dialog is pretty well drowned out by the music at that point, so maybe it is there, but very quiet. Did anyone else notice this?

Edit:
Scratch that. Subtitles say something like "mouthing words" so apparently it is supposed to be silent. Sixteen candles is OK.

malkmuz 09-08-03 10:34 AM

I just watched it the other night, and the transfer is awesome. The alleged missing audio doesn't bother me much at all, it would have been nice if they had gotten everything right, and I understand the frustration for people who have every single line memorized, but... for me it isn't a big deal. It cost $11 and is certianly better than the older release that I sold for $45 a few months ago on eBay.

SvenL 09-08-03 01:03 PM

Does anybody remember hearing this line when watching the movie at the cinema back in 1985 ?
I've read that John Hughes has removed/added lines for the TV/Home Video versions of other movies too - so it could be that the line was added later and when they went back to the original soundtrack it wasn't there.

The missing lines are in the English Captions. Although the captions are missing a few lines that are said on screen, which is odd.
Maybe the subtitles have been recycled from the earlier DVD - that would explain any missing/additional lines in them - we may have gotten the original soundtrack (the way the movie was screened in 1985) and the subtitles of the Home Video version.

I remember watching the movie in a cinema - but it was the German dubbed version (and my memory wouldn't be that good anyway).

Huh? I missed that one. What was wrong with Ferris Beuller?

SvenL 09-09-03 07:44 AM

Some people swear that when they saw the movie in the theater they saw Mia Sara's character change into a bathing suit in front of Alan Ruck's character.
On the DVD (and any other version I've ever seen) they only talk about her changing in front of him.

Squirrel God 09-09-03 08:28 PM

I can't see how this is anything other than yet another cock up from Universal.

You see Gary's lips move, he appears to mouth "Very nice" but all you can hear is the soundtrack music. The soundtrack music continues, subs have Gary saying "I tell you what Wyatt, if there's one thing I know it's female stats ..." but you don't hear him say anything - just the soundtrack music. Then the dialogue comes back with Gary saying "Anything bigger than a handful, you're risking a sprained tongue" (i.e. halfway through the sentence).

Disregarding the rest of the faults, simply having Gary's lips moving with nothing coming out looks entirely stupid and ruins the 'feel' of the entire scene.

It's like the guy who did the sound mix hit the mute button on the dialogue channel accidentally!

Anyone have a contact e-mail for Universal? They should be told about this.

BuddyRevell 09-10-03 06:25 PM

Couldn't find a "Problem with DVD'S" section on the Universal site. But you can try this......

Weak.

Yeah, it's a flub. F***ing universal.

Are the lines missing from both the DD and DTS tracks?

And on a semi-related note, are the boobs still in the film (from the piano-playing girl at the party?)

I am trying to figure out if I should sell my original version to Blockbuster for $8+, E-bay it, or keep it.

Yes, littlefuzzy, there is a Booby Scene.

Yup. Both English DD and English DTS are affected.

The Spanish DD dubtrack appears to be just fine though.

These people are smokin' some good stuff. I saw the film on its original run, on video, and at a revival theatrical showing, and never, NEVER has Sloane been shown changing in front of Cameron. They only talk about it after the fact.
