Gettysburg was a great DVD , Gods and Generals was ok but not as good as Gettysburg I thought, but I will get the 6 hour Gods and Generals and hope it has a few documentaries on it also.

Well the current DVD hit the 2/$10 sale at Circuit City last week, which sometimes indicates a dumping of current stock before a better release.

... or it was just a Father's Day promotion.

Or, I suppose, maybe both.

kingtopher 06-21-06 11:23 PM

Or the dumping of a title that just hasn't sold well at all.

I'd still love to see an extended release, and this thread being bumped after two years got me excited for a second, but I really doubt this is ever going to happen. Unfortunately I don't see the planned third movie ever being made either. It's too bad.

It is too bad that the third film won't happen, since the end credits actually did make mention to the third film.

and I've always wanted to see the John Wilkes Booth deleted scenes.

still no word on the 6 hour cut of 'G&G'

but...

Gettysburg / Gods and Generals

The operative word in this thread: "tedious". Frickin' spot-on.

Let me suggest a few others that also work: bloated, ponderous, starchy, stultified, inert.

I remember this flick as 3-1/2 solid hours of sanctimonious horseshit, shameless revisionism, and largely a paen to slave holders and slave traders. As one reviewer said: "ballooning, jingoistic goat spoor". And now fucking six hours long? I take solace in the notion that no sane person would ever sit through this kitchified drivel in anything approaching a non-dormant state, even at it's original "lean" 3-1/2 hours.

tell us how you 'really' feel about the film... ;)

Richard Malloy 12-19-06 02:50 PM

I really hate that film.

jonjj7 12-19-06 03:23 PM

Yeah, it was really bad. I really liked Gettysburg though. They should have stuck to the book for Gods and Generals....

ernestrp 12-19-06 03:34 PM

I got the first release but have never gotten around to watching it.

Panda Phil 12-19-06 05:27 PM

Didn't think it was THAT bad and certainly don't think it glorified slavery any more than the first film did. Of course that doesn't mean I don't FF past a couple of scenes. But it's well worth it for the well done battle scenes, and I thought Stephen Lang did a bang up job. If the added footage were more battlefield re-enactments, they'd have my dime.

Well thats certainly good news. I'm always up for extended cuts. Its just a shame the extras are just the ones from the original release.

Besides, I need a new copy of Gettysburg. I had two different copies of the original flipper go bad on me and ended up just downloading a copy.

I wouldn't complain if it happens, but I haven't seen any official word of a DVD release. This is being put out by Warner and they're not shy about trying to extort you into converting to Blu.

$55.99 pre-order on Amazon.com. July 4th release date for the limited edition set. I have been waiting for Gettysburg extended for years!!!! It is about time.....

Re: 6 hour gods and generals coming in dec. according to msnbc!

Looks like I stand corrected on that SD release. Amazon has it also listed for the 4th for 66 bucks. Good news, although there's no way I'm going to pay that price.

Re: 6 hour gods and generals coming in dec. according to msnbc!

Anyone know the differences besides packaging between the individual blu dvds which Amazon describes as coming in book packaging and the limited edition set? The individual blu-ray sets can be had for a cheaper overall price so I am wondering what I am missing if I cancel my limited edition order and order the individual movies. Amazon does not list too much on the limited edition. An above post lists the specs but I really do not see much difference between them outside of packaging....and the limited edition is numbered.

Yeah....no. MSRP is $69.98. Now it's all the way down to about 63 bucks so only about three more years to go before I think about touching it.
