Impressive collection Djtoell, especially the Wet Hot American Summer-where'd you get that, all at one place?

I have a question for those that get DVD's signed. I have a chance to meet C. Thomas Howell in a couple of weeks. I intend to have him sign the most recent release of Francis Ford Coppola's "The Outsiders." My question is this: given the choice on a release like this, would you have him sign the coverart or the slipcover?

I'm leaning toward the coverart. One of the reasons for this is that it'll keep it consistant with my other signed DVD's. Another: the slipcase has one of those holes cut out where the UPC is. I doubt it'll ever happen, but if that ever gets caught on something and tears, I'll be quite sad to have damaged the part of the DVD that I had him sign. A signature just seems more protected inside of the plastic on the keepcase...as opposed to on a slipcover on the outside of the disc.

However, if I do get the coverart signed, does that mean I should toss the slipcase? I'm a completist collector who freaks out over things like missing slipcovers (even if they are, as is the case here, identical to the coverart). It's just something I'm anal about. However, if I keep the slipcover, it'll cover up the signature.

Which would you have signed, coverart or slipcover?

I'd probably get him to sign the coverart. Like you said, being underneath the plastic, it'll be more protected and not as easily damaged. You can still cover it up with the slipcover, unless you have all your autographed stuff displayed somewhere special, in which case, you can just store the slipcover elsewhere.

There's an event coming up here in January and Robert Englund's going to be one of the guests. I'm probably going to get my Nightmare Collection box, but not sure if I should get one of the sides (with the embossed Freddy), or the top. I'm leaning towards the top since it'll never slide against anything, and a signature on the embossed side might not be as 'clean.'

My thoughts exactly. When Bruce Campbell signed Bubba Ho-tep I had him sign the coverart. I still use the slipcover so if anyone wants to see it, I'll just slide it out.

Edit: I just remembered I had to have one slipcover signed because there was no other real option. This was when Richard Donner and Laura Shuler Donner signed Xmen 2.5. I just have to be extra careful nothing rubs against the cover.

Thanks. I got the Wet Hot DVDs over time. Chris Meloni was the first, as he was filming an episode of "Law & Order: SVU" around the corner from my law school. I ran over to a Virgin Megastore to buy the disc (it had come out recently and I was waiting for a good price on it - I had already seen the film theatrically), then ran back to the set to wait to meet Meloni. He was very cool. He seemed surprised that someone would have that film, of all things, for him to sign; he wasn't even aware that it was on DVD yet. After that, I got signatures in two groups. I'm not sure I can remember who was at each one, but one was a midnight screening of the film at the AMC Empire in Times Square (one of the rappers from the credits song was there, and Wain did the other rap part - "My name is David Wain/And I have a big black cock."). The other was a Soundtracks Live presentation of Pretty in Pink at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater.

Most people (outside of the "The State" circle) seemed excited that someone gave them Wet Hot to sign.

I proposed to Amy Poehler as she was signing the DVD. Given that she's still married to that other dude, it obviously didn't work out. Oh well.

I'd lost track of this thread somehow. I was just searching for it to have it bumped, hoping somebody would answer my question. Little did I know, a couple people already had. Thanks a lot...you've convinced the anal side of me to keep quiet, while the logical side has the coverart signed and allows the disc to go without it's slipcover. This becomes exponentially harder for me this weekend, when I get a chance to meet Brad Bird. That "Incredibles" slipcover is just so damn shiny and beautiful. Ah well, that's the price I pay for spawning a hobby within a hobby.

Last night I went to the Sin City 2 disc release party. I got it signed by Frank Miller, Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino, and Carla Gugino. On the back Kevin Smith signed it: " I wish I had something to do with this flick ", also on the back James Duval wrote, " Do you believe in time travel, Frank the bunny ". They were all really nice people.

I wanted to go to that, dammit.

There was quite a crowd...more people than I expected. When I got there, I pretty much wrote off any hopes of getting an autograph. I just happened to be in the area where he walked in and out from, so after asking one of the staff volunteers which direction he'd be going when he left, I posted up. He was walking out with four police escorts when a guy directly to my right held up a huge movie poster and asked him to sign it. He stopped for him and I was next in line. I left right after getting the signature, so I'm not sure how long he stayed to meet people and sign autographs.

The lecture itself was pretty nifty. It wasn't as political as I'd expected it to be. He just talked about how he got his start in the movie business (one thing that I didn't know; Ang Lee was in his class at NYU), his past films, what it was like working with Denzel on Malcolm X, his upcoming projects and so forth.

Kind of a late update, but I did get an autograph on the AoD LE tin...after waiting in line for an hour and a half. It stretched 2 blocks.

The most annoying thing was he was also screening Man with the Screaming Brain. At the time I didn't know anything about the movie and didn't know Ted Raimi was in it. So here I was next in line and he comes cruising by. By the time my brain processed who he was it was my turn. What luck.
