Good horror anthologies?
I really like these but I haven't seen much available on DVD. I currently own Creepshow (pretty decent), Creepshow 2 (not so great), and the three Tales from the Crypt episodes currently available. I know there is stuff like the old Tales from the Crypt movie, but that one isn't out yet. So what else is there?

I love horror anthologies! Here are my favorites:
Asylum (1972 British horror anthology) Trilogy of Terror (1975 classic starring Karen Black in four roles) Twice Told Tales (Vincent Price stars in all three segments) |
Cat's Eye (1985)! :D
|
I collect horror anthologies also. Some good ones not already mentioned:
Tales from the Hood Tales from the Darkside Nightmares The Hammer House of Horror boxset |
Two Evil Eyes- Not great (but still good) and only 2 stories, but it just came out on DVD so it was one of the first I thought of.
edited- You already mentioned "Tales..." |
Black Sabbath is a killer trilogy from my fav director, Mario Bava. original title is The Three Faces of Fear, and it's the Widescreen Euro Version from Image. original, un-cut Italian versions. Boris Karloff hosts and stars in the trilogy, and looks his spookiest in The Wurdulak story, about a vamp who needs to suck the blood of his family. the other standout story is the creepiest....The Drop of Water. I love this dvd!!
update: dont forget the dvd Kwaidan, from Criterion. a selection of japaneese stories...very nice. |

aside from those listed in my first post...which I believe are superior to those american titles, I have to also suggest the Guinea Pig series from japan. you'll need an open mind and a strong stomach...it's not for everyone. some seem like border-line snuff shorts....it's all fun though.
also from japan, I suggest the All Night Long series of 3 titles. one story is about a boy with such a big crush on his girl neighbor, that he collects her trash and eats some....and posts her "cycle" on his wall....and you know where I'm going with this.... also, Men Behind the Sun has a nice series out..also from japan. disgusting. I still need this on dvd....soon it will arrive. I have seen them however....my cup-o-tea. |
An early one and still one of the best: DEAD OF NIGHT (1945). It should be coming out from Anchor Bay within the next couple of weeks as a double feature with the rare QUEEN OF SPADES.
SPIRITS OF THE DEAD is also a great Poe anthology from Fellini, Truffaut and Vadim. And not to be a jerk, but it should probably be pointed out that only two of danol's long list of suggestions above are anthology films. Also Gutwrencher's suggestions, GUINEA PIG, MEN BEHIND THE SUN and ALL NIGHT LONG, aren't anthology films either. An anthology film is a single movie that features multiple self-contained stories. |

The best horror anthologies of 'em all (imho) are DEAD OF NIGHT (coming soon from Anchor Bay) and Mario Bava's BLACK SABBATH.
Some of the Amicus films, especially TALES FROM THE CRYPT and FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE are very good, but those aren't available on DVD (at least, not in region 1). Oh, and a SE DVD of Amicus' THE HOUSE THAT DRIPPED BLOOD is in the works, btw. A friend of mine is writing the liner notes. |

Thanks for bringing up the topic and reminding me of Tales Of Terror. Seeing Vincent Price preparing for the wine tasting competition is great.

Although not on DVD yet, I like Tales From the Crypt and Vault of Horror.
Terror Tract is a fun anthology. You can't go wrong with Hal from "Malcolm in the Middle" vs. a killer monkey. |

Hey all, don't worry, I'm SURE that Tales from the Crypt will be coming soon on DVD, because I just bought a brand new VHS copy.
(That's the way these things usually work... someone has to make the sacrifice! :D ) Oh, good news on House That Dripped Blood, too. |
Tales from the Hood, and I liked the troma release Hellblock 13. It dumb, but cool.
