I wonder whether it would suggest that maybe a new Fantasia Anthology Boxset may appear sometime in the future although i do accept the current release is a very impressive package..but hey! who thought that a 9 disc 'Alien Quadrilogy' boxset would ever appear!

This would be the only reason I'd double dip on Fantasia. The anothology box is all ready pretty great, censorship issues notwithstanding.

This is all great news. I've been going through a big Disney watching period the last couple of months, and was lamenting the idea of having to wait until 2010 to have all of the titles. Great news

Where are you guys getting your information? I was always told that the Disney DVD titles that were on moratorium or not yet released were going to get platinum treatment. Sleeping Beauty and Peter Pan just got SE treatment, and as already mentioned Fantasia is in the anthology.

Here's what I always thought were going to comprise the platinum series:

1. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
2. Beauty and the Beast
3. The Lion King
4. Aladdin
5. Bambi
6. The Jungle Book
7. Cinderella
8. The Little Mermaid
9. Lady and The Tramp
10. 101 Dalmatians

PixyJunket 05-02-03 08:11 AM

Er.. so.. does this mean the upcoming Sleeping Beauty is a Platinum release?

Brain Stew 05-02-03 08:19 AM

There isn't going to be a platinum Sleeping Beauty, it is a special edition coming out September 9.

Not sure. I suppose it's a possibility, but it might be that it's just being added to the Collection and that when the next cycle begins (HD-DVD), it will be among the 14 titles in the rotation.

PixyJunket 05-02-03 08:28 AM

Hmm.. interesting.. it's good news though. Glad to have more of the Disney classics, and I'll buy Peter Pan as many times as they want me to!!

Of course, this probably does not accelerate Little Mermaid at all, seeing as it's going to IMAX Christmas 2004, the DVD is still 2005 bound.. :(

That isn't one of the new titles. They're Sleeping Beauty, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, and Fantasia. I assume they'll mostly be repackaging the upcoming Sleeping Beauty and the Fantasia content from the currently available Fantasia Anthology.
I don’t get it. Does that mean there will be the SE sleeping beauty AND the Platinum?

As for Fantasia platinum 110% uncensored, I’ll believe that when I see it!

Johnny Zhivago 05-02-03 09:47 AM

Fantasia? :hscratch:

Other than that curiosity, this is all about the cha-ching.

Alec Eiffel 05-02-03 09:49 AM

Thanks for the news LBPound!!!

I'm glad that Cinderella and Bambi will be released to dvd sooner because I'm not sure how many people who worked on them are still with us. Bambi in particular.

Muir Hewitt

Which laser disc from Disney contained the complete cartoon "The Three Little Pigs"?

Please give pic or a brief discription of the cover and the LD number, if possible.

Thanks in advance for this info! :D

pagansoul 05-02-03 11:42 AM

All I want is 'BAMBI' please.

sn9ke_eyes 05-02-03 12:04 PM

good news, let's get them ramped up and out to the stores now !

Erica 05-02-03 12:04 PM

This is wonderful news!

Pants 05-02-03 12:14 PM

Where are you guy's getting the idea that there will be a Fantasia re-release?

JoeyOhhhh 05-02-03 12:15 PM

Cool.

Obviously a move because they appear to be coming out with more lackluster releases.

If Fantasia is the same exact disc as the current, except uncut, I'd pick it up.

But it does beg the question will Sleeping Beauty be a 1 disc platinum release?

Pants 05-02-03 01:39 PM

And here's the reason!

From IMDb:

"Disney's second-quarter results were such that it might have considered replacing Mickey Mouse with Grumpy as its standard bearer. The company said that its net income fell by 12 percent, largely due to a 45-percent plunge in earnings at its theme parks. The ABC broadcasting business showed a 13 percent rise in gross revenue but profits fell 25 percent largely due to increased programming costs and the expenses incurred in covering the war in Iraq. The one bright spot on the company's ledgers was home video, which showed a 24-percent rise in earnings. Results from theatrical ticket sales were flat with last year, the company said."

Here's Disney's official SEC filing, check Iger's comments, two paragraphs up from Eisner's comments, about 3/4 of the way through the document. That's where this comes from...

Rather than ten-year release cycles for each Platinum title, we now expect to release two Platinum titles per year, in March and October, which will effectively condense the cycle to seven years. This will enable us to distribute all Platinum titles on DVD by 2007 rather than 2010, allowing for a two-year selling window and a five-year period where the title is off the market. In addition, we plan to expand the Platinum portfolio in 2004 -- after the release of our next Platinum title "The Lion King" -- to include "Sleeping Beauty," "Pinocchio," "Peter Pan" and "Fantasia."

Thank GOD Ill be able to get The Jungle Book quicker than expected. Thats the only cartoon I cared about. Its one of my most favorite (alont with The Sword In The Stone)

Quick question, Im a big Fantasia fan, but I didnt know it was censored! I have the original VHS but have been saving for the Anthology, but can anyone tell me what they edited or censored? Is there maybe a site that shows all the editing that Disney does to their damn movies?

I never had the laserdisc, but from what I know, they did restore the film around 1990. They then did a new transfer of the restored film for the DVD.

What I was talking about was a digital clean-up like they did for Snow White, and has been also done for live-action films like Citizen Kane and Singin' in the Rain. What I would like them to do is what they did for the segment "The Sorceror's Apprentice" for Fantasia 2000, but for the rest of the movie.

The biggest one is this:

http://widescreen.org/multimedia/fantasia1.mov
http://widescreen.org/multimedia/fantasia2.mov
http://widescreen.org/multimedia/fantasia3.mov

Also, the scene that has baby centaurs carrying a Greek God originally had both black and white centaurs; they removed the black ones and kept the white ones.

And a couple of other things.

Grizzly 05-02-03 09:05 PM

i hope this means Bambi in 2004!!

Ravenous 05-04-03 12:51 AM

Whew, those edits I dont mind. But PLEASE tell me they didnt edit the final song with the demons with breasts (what are they called; harpies?)!!

No, the Harpies are still in there thank goodness.

I'm with you, I'm glad those scenes were taken out. Damn that's creepy. Sure, while watching this film I enjoy being suddenly reminded that when this was made, black people stuck to shining shoes, using the back entrance to buildings, and swinging from trees by their neck if they stared at a white woman too long.

Damn character shouldn't have been in there in the first place.

Whether or not they SHOULD have filmed those scenes in the first place is moot; they did.

However, who decides what should be censored and what shouldn't? If the sensibilities of our society were different slightly, the harpies would be gone and the black centaurette would stay.

Disney has the right to self-censor. But I don't have to agree with what they censor. Again, if they had done the reverse, it would be their right, and I wouldn't agree with that either.
