Coffin Joe Trilogy
Okay, I saw this at Best Buy. The box is shaped like an old coffin, which immediately brought it to my attention :) The main things I gathered from reading the back of the coffin is that these are from Brazil, made during the 60's and it's a numbered set (10,000 total).
I know a few of you must have this.... you maniac collectors you. What can ya tell me about this boxset? |
I bought all three films individually when they first came out. Pretty stupid, huh? They are interesting, but kind of slow moving. They are VERY low budget, much like a student-film, although the transfer quality is good. Ironically, the cheap look adds a kind of realism. Coffin Joe is more of a "victorian" villain, like "Jack the Ripper" or "Mr Hyde" rather than a Jason or Freddy Krueger. I suspect they created the boxset to unload the unsold individual copies. How much was it? I ended up paying around $17 each for them individually.

Here's a pretty decent summation of Jose Mojica Marins'(Coffin Joe)
films in that box set. thedigitalbits.com/doogansviews/102401.html#thisnight If you ever have questions regarding these sorts of things, I recommend using DVD-Basen. |
That digitalbits review of Awakening of the Beast is a little misleading. It's not at all an anti-drug film (in fact, I wonder if the reviewer watched the entire thing... or maybe they misunderstood it). I'll say no more in hopes of not spoiling it, but it's a much more thoughtful film than what the reviewer describes. It's the only one of the three I have (the others don't look as interesting to me) and I like it quite a lot.

Thanks for the info, peeps. Quartermass, I think it was $50. Also, it looked like it was packaged with mini-posters of each movie.
|
I think $50 is a little steep, unless you collect numbered limited editions or esoteric horror movies.
|
My Best Buy has it for $36.99
|
I saw this also for $36.99, and read the back of the coffin but still was not sure what it was?
|
You guys are probably right about the price. I had looked at so many discs that day, for some reason $50 just kinda stuck in my head :)
|
bump from 3 years back....anyone tell me what 3 are in the box, and if anything else is available in R1?
|
The three films included are: AT MIDNIGHT I'll TAKE YOUR SOUL (1964), THIS NIGHT I WILL POSSESS YOUR CORPSE (1967) and AWAKENING OF THE BEAST (1970). Off the top of my head, I would say that no other Coffin Joe films are available in R1 DVD, but I'm not 100% sure about that.

But man,
that South American set is the SHEZZNIT! It's the three movies in the U.S. set, plus three more. It has trailers for all of Marlins' films, reversible covers with famous Brazilian artists work on one side and original poster art on the other. Oh, and even more extras(screen tests, early short films, radio shows, TV shows, documentaries, intros to each film, photo galleries, etc), it's a shame most are not in English. Though the main documentary (World of Coffin Joe) does have English subtitles. It may be the most complete collection of a filmmaker's work I've EVER seen. It makes the U.S. set look like a child's toy.

thanks...was looking at this for a family member. Good to have some options
|
I forgot...
just to be clear, all the films in the set I talked about are subtitled. And the prints look just as good as the U.S. release.
