I got one at my Blockbuster today!! I didn't have enough cash on me to buy it right away (says own it for $16.50 more), but I'll ask when I have to return it.

I'll be keeping mine. A pretty good keepsake that wasn't hard to find or expensive to buy.

Correction, it may not that hard find on your end, but other states/cities dont carry it.

And Congratulations! Im happy to know others who were able to maximize their visit at Blockbuster and obtaining hidden rare DVD like the Evil Dead "Rental Edition"

LeeVing 07-12-06 02:18 AM

just checked another BB here and it has one too...so I'll try to get 2 of them this weekend...I got netflix, so i don't even know if my BB info is up to date, and haven't rented from them in a while. I saw that they have little "placards" behind the dvds now...may have to snag one of those too. the Evil Dead is the same art as the rental only version.

wewantflair 07-12-06 03:50 AM

This BB OOP hunt is unbelievable...turns out they have tons of OOP stuff that is just ripe for the picking.

Cinemaddiction 07-13-06 01:21 AM

I mentioned that to my girlfriend. I considered going through the store just to see whatelse I could "rent".

wewantflair 07-13-06 07:31 AM

No joke - got Rutger Hauer's Split Second and The Last Emperor from a local BB. This is a potential gold mine.

greetings my excellent friends!

i was curious if the book of the dead gift pack (the one with the evil dead book and the evil dead 2 book) comes with the cool book of the dead booklet? (the brown one that has the four little skulls in each corner and in gold writing says "the evil dead")

thanks in advance!

I Love looking back at your collection xage, I was wondering why you said that there were only 4 covers of the Jewel Cased Evil Dead Anchorbay ? Were there really 5covers ? if so what is the 5th cover?

footnotes:

* Contrary to early information that there were "5" variations of the 1999 Anchorbay Released, it seems that there were only four "4" (enough to spell E-V-I-L at its spine# ). The set stir a lot of confusion at ebay as the stock photo made available was not even the same cover/art.

** The two released lunchboxes were always been mistaken as the same, but its NOT (One has a DVD in it, the other has a Thermos).

*** Please be aware that the sought after OOP release/version of the "Boomstick Edition" is the one with the "Limited Collectible 8 page Booklet" entitled Join the Army

**** Please take note that there were four #d Limited Edition releases of Army of Darknes. The Hard ones to obtain or the so called "rarer" versions are the ones released in Canada.

- Gold keepcase / Director's Cut limited to (US) #out of 40,000 and (Canada) #out of 5,000
- 2 disc Alpha Case limited to (US) #out of 30,000 and (Canada) #out of 4,000

**** This is an exclusive Blockbuster "Rental Only" Edition and "Not For Sale". Released back in 2002. And what made it so rare was it's limited release of availability to "Corporate" Blockbuster Stores only

Abe. 09-25-06 10:59 PM

After looking at your collection, I realized that I actually own about 80% of those DVDs. I bought the Blockbuster rental exclusive from my store, so I didn't have to search hard for that one. It was actually in very, very mint condition, but I didn't pay $19.99 for it, I bought it with the 4 for $20 promo they had going on previously used DVDs.

The Boomstick version I have, has the booklet, is that the rare version? Why did they not include this in future releases?

The included booklet was the factor why the boomstick edition is high in value

The Boomstick version was the last DVD release of Army of Darkness, so there haven't been any future releases that the booklet could be included in.

I picked the rental thingy today at Blockbuster. My receipt says the additional charge for this disc in $19.99. Any advice about talking the store down a little, I've noticed several of you have gotten it for $9.99

Abe. 09-26-06 08:15 PM

I'm an employee, so I actually transfered it to previously used, which would bring the price down to $9.99. You can ask one of the managers to do the transfer, but the chances of them doing it, are very low, espeically with the new "keep it" policy that was put in place last month.

What is the "keep it" policy?

Abe. 09-26-06 08:24 PM

Blockbuster no longer deducts the actual paid rental charge if you decide to keep a rental. Now, you have to pay the rental charge, plus the actual full retail value of the product, depending on it's availability in the store as used or new.

king slug 09-27-06 05:04 PM

I got curious on this and went to the old BB today and I found one. I paid $3.99 for the rental, says pay $19.99 to own. Seems worth it for a rare dvd, the disc is in decent shape (just some minor scratches, nothing major) except there's a Blockbuster "disc shield" on the actual dvd. Is that a good or bad thing? And if it's bad, how do I remove it? :|

Abe. 09-27-06 05:08 PM

You can remove the shield by peeling it starting by the center hub. To be honest, the chances are higher that you'll damage the disc in the process. If the shield doesn't have any bubbles, I say just keep it on.

We had two copies at my store, and one had the shield... I bought the other one :)

king slug 09-27-06 05:55 PM

But it has a bubble. :(

Abe. 09-27-06 06:03 PM

Oh man, that's a tough call. If I were you, I'd probably just continue the search.

king slug 09-27-06 07:54 PM

It's actually not that big of a thing for me.... I'll probably just end up selling it anyways. Plus, it's not like it's a big surprise that it was a former rental. :)

True_Story1011 09-28-06 10:33 AM

Any word on a Army of Darkness Book of the Dead coming soon?

GuruTwo 09-28-06 01:36 PM

Anchor Bay lost the rights to "Army of Darkness" so no, it won't ever happen.
