When did studios first start using slipcases?

Does anyone know when studios first started using slipcases? From my own collection, it seems like 2003 was the first time DVDs started appearing in a slipcase. Can anyone state what the first studio and DVD to use a slipcase was, and possibly why slipcases were introduced? Thanks to anyone that replies.

Once Upon a Time in Mexico was one of the first ones I can remember, and that must have been late 2003.

Thanks, MrSmearkase. Late 2003 does seem like the first time that slipcases were used. I just wonder why studios started using them. And by the way, I like slipcases.
