Im not one of those who got mesmerized with steelbook in the 2006ish to 2007ish DVD collection era...

I started the very first I laid my eyes on 2005 Los Angeles E3's Geneon Booth...

I heard about it at European DVD discussion sites Ive been at but never saw one in actual...

After hearing the release date, I grab the opportunity in obtaining the perfect packaged numbered limited edition (back then it was a major hassle since most stores carry an imperfect package and given there were only 8,000 limited edition released).

From a DVDTalk post I made about 3yrs ago, its one of my top 5:

Top DVDs of 2005 Thread

6.) Contanstantine: Deluxe Edition
7.) Lemony Snicket's: A Series of Unfortunate Events CE with book
8.) The Incredibles
9.) Cinderella
10.) Office Space Special Edition
And from what I stand about this breaktrough in North American Soil...

Back then, its a 50/50 chance one gets a mint condition casing because most release has the action figure loose from its blister pack. And whats weird despite the reported problem, most retail stores went sold out within its release date.

For me, this is probably the rarest steelbook release in Region 1

My 3 Main Reasons!

1. It is the first Steelbook released in R1

2. The Giftset itself is Limited and #d out of 8000

3. GENEON (The manufacturer) is DEAD!

overall.. my very 1st steelbook happens to be the very start of the Media Packaging revolution - steelbook

Appleseed was my first, though I think because that's all that was available when I bought it. I wasn't really into them until I Am Legend had the unique biohazard/epidemic poster case, and Cloverfield had a somewhat in-universe battered case.

Appleseed was my first steelbook. I later upgraded it to get the figurine.

My first one was The Departed. I wasn't a member of any forums yet, but I would pick up le's, special packaging stuff when I could. I remember going to Best Buy to pick up The Departed. I heard great things about the movie, so I wanted to see it when it first came out. I saw the steelbook, and I actually contemplated buying it over the standard 2 disc set; I had both in my hand and I couldn't decide. The metal won me over, and when I opened it up, saw the Steelbook(TM) stamp, I did an internet search and learned all about them.

I do remember seeing Boondock Saints on the shelves, but I passed on it 'cos I had the single disk, and I figured I would just pick it up when the price dropped. It took me a long time to finally get a copy of that one.

I also have Steelbooks to thank for joining dvdtalk. I started searching for more information on other steelies and stumbled on in here, and now I check here first.

As far as my list, I just joined dvdspot to create a separate list for them. I've got two R2's I just submitted for their databases (Pan's Labyrinth and 300 from Spain). Check my sig. for the list. Sorry for the long read.

I didn't hop on the Steelbook train until recently when I picked up the Cloverfield Steelbook the day it was released. Which I followed up with buying Boondock Saints a matter of days afterward

I know it's not a movie, but believe it or not the first steelook I ever owned was the special edition of Halo 2. I put it on reserve months prior and had no idea what the cover would look like, and then thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen. After that was, like many others, Dune.

Departed.

it was the first time i'd ever even heard of steelbook and i just thought the cover looked SO MUCH BETTER than the standard 2-disc with slipcover.

The departed for me, although I had seen and really wanted the Boondock Saints before that but when I went back to get one they were all gone.

I remember when Future Shop gave out cheap steel sleeves before steelbooks caught-on. I think I still have one for Van Helsing. My first real steelbook is either 300 or Dune.

my first steelbook was casshern (r2). it was early 2005, i was in hmv and the cover artwork caught my eye. Never had heard of the film before but the cover made it look 'important.' I had to buy it. The film turned out to be quite good.

The next steelbook i got after that was total recall. had a job getting it, it was sold out everywhere and i kicked myself for not buying it when i saw it for a fiver. But i eventually (luckily) found a copy in a secondhand record shop.

Now i know to buy it when its actually in the shop, because there is nothing worse that searching everywhere for something that was highly available only a couple of months ago.

The latest steelbook i bought was pans labyrinth (spanish r2.)

I just received my first steelbook today. It's Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Season 1. Very nice packaging but I doubt I'll go out of my way to acquire many more.

Boondock Saints. I didn't know what it was, but I thought the case was cool and I wanted the 2 disc Unrated. Shortly after I got The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Pride FC 2000GP. Dunno after that, because then I realized how many there were and started ordering past releases and such. Up to 38 now.

Haven't gotten into the steelbooks, but just ordered The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Ultimate Edition cheap from Columbia House. Surprised to see when I received it that it was a steelbook (shows you how much I know, eh?). So there's my first...and likely my only for a while I suppose.

Since Dune doesn't count, as it is a Viva Metalpak, my DVDSpot tells me it was Boondock Saints.
