I cannot stand any digipaks and I particularly despise the fact that they are not replaceable.

Loose discs, without a doubt bothers me the most, especially when you buy online. The sound of a loose disc rattling around when you get the mail sucks.

I've had a bad streak with floaters recently, DDD (of course), Best Buy and my recent purchase from Walmart.com.

Which is why I purchase most of my tv shows from the USA. Not only is it quicker, they also tend to have more better packaging

Same problem in South Africa; in the past six months or so, most TV seasons and movie boxsets have been released in those oversized plastic cases. Previously they were packaged the same way as the UK releases. Plus, it tends to be inconsistent, for example, Angel season 1-4 was released here in digipacks, and then season 5 turned up in one of those plastic cases.

When there is no name on the Spine.

Speaking of which, it annoys me when artwork gets changed from the original logo text to some generic font (the new Batman SEs, etc.) -- the one that sticks out for me is "Independence Day", because they went from the official font (thick black lettering) to a generic one in gold that was almost unreadable against the silver background.

I don't like the cardboard cases.
I DO like the slipsleeve packaging. I think it looks more professional. I'm a treehugger, but I can't help it. I like the slipsleeve!

joliom 01-16-07 09:19 PM

Another one: When they change around the packaging from one season to the next so they don't match and/or feature completely different types of cases. Separate seasons should all match or at least feature a matching style. Same for movie franchises (especially when it's all under the banner of the same parent studio). The Star Trek 2-disc SE's are a perfect example. Why the Hell is the first one yellow and all the rest silver? Would it have killed them to make them all silver?

What's the difference between cardboard cases and slipsleeve packaging?

The cardboard cases I'm talking about are the ones like - Spies Like Us, A Time to Kill, The Matrix, Bloodwork, Mystic River, etc. The slipsleeves are the ones that slide over the regular style cases like - Assault on Precinct 13, Devil Wears Prada, The Forgotten, Sideways, etc.

The shrinkwrap that sticks to the spine of the dvd. Have a few sealed dvds that looks like they have shrinkwrap stuck to the spine, is there any way I can open them to mimize the sticking? Maybe a razor blade opening along the spine? Or I am just stuck to just opening and then using the goo gone or wd40 after?

Any help appreciated.

canaryfarmer 02-07-07 12:22 PM

I just swap those cases out with blank ones I've bought. I hate that spine-wrap. It's impossible to get it all off.

bgmat58 02-25-07 11:35 AM

im really anal. the stickers on the slipcovers. the top sticker that always happens to get stuck on the plastic of the case and tears the plastic when pulling the sticker. but above all i hate flippers. disc w/o and sort of design. i put my discs in binders so it bothers the hell out of me. the original goodfellas was a 'flipper' and i hated it, thank god for the two disc se.

BobSchlapowitz 03-11-07 06:36 PM

I understand the need to do it, but I hate when they drastically change the cover images when they re-issue a movie. case in point, the Superman films 2001 DVD releases had great cover art of their original theatrical posters, but the recent SE's of them have covers that are really...bad.

I'll never understand that one. It's so bizarre.

Yeah, I guess I'm going too far, but I can't be the only one who thinks that way. If I am, so be it.

You are NOT alone. Even worse is when they take off features to make room for a french audio track. A perfect example is Sin City recut where they took of the DTS track to make room for a DD French track. WTF?!?!?!?!

I agree that since they are making another version just make it all French and sell it in Quebec and give the rest of Canada the American version!

DoubleDownAgain 03-12-07 06:16 PM

Despite the issues with digipaks I actually prefer them, I think they look better than the standard keepcase. I also like the size of them, but I can understand those with larger collections wanting the space a thinner case would give. I might change my mind if I run out room.

I really hate the low-quality double-disc slim-pack cases used for the James Bond Ultimate sets. I ordered all 4 from Amazon, and I ended up requesting replacements for all 4 since there was at least one disc (in most cases, 3 or 4 discs) with noticeable scratches because of the stupid packaging. I slightly twisted one of the discs when I was pulling it off the hub, and that was enough to create a collection of circular scratches along the bottom of the disc. And since it's the actual cases causing the scratches, I'm not in the clear even once I finally got a full set without scratches - now I need to be super careful everytime I use them so as not to create new scratches myself! Great packaging!

If you're going to use slimlines, they need to be high-quality enough for the bottoms of the discs to not have contact with the case over their entire surface area. The hub is supposed to keep the disc elevated, and a small ring around where the edge of the disc is is supposed to keep the disc from bending one way or another.

That is my number one issue with DVDs! I love TV on DVD, and I think it is the best way to get into a show, but in my collection I have sooo many different packages! The O.C. for example, my Season 1 is this huge case (Which I like, It looks a lot better on the inside and such!), Season 2 is much skinnier, but still in the nice book style, then comes season 3 with that new (I assume cheaper) unrolling thin style! Why change it so many times!!! Season 4 I know will be thinner to their being less episodes, so not one will match! Gilmore Girls is also an issue! Season 1 and 2 are thick, season 3 through 5 are books style thin, and season 6 is unrolling and thinner! Why cant their be the same theme throughout?

My other complaint is like the first, but with my Roseanne sets, Season 1 and two look great, and the way they sit their is a film strip that continues between the two when they are side by side. Then you have seasons 3 to 6 that have the film strip moved down, and right on top of the strip is the DVD emblem! U cant even see the pic behind! Why do that???

Shows like Friends, Buffy, Angel, Dawson's Creek, Roswell, and others got it right and packaging is mostly the same throughout! Except I think my Friends season 4 has an error because others I see dont have this, but the "Season 4" emblem that is on every other season above their heads is missing... When side by side it bothers me... Yes I am anal but I am paying good money for these!

Lastly, The packaging that most shows have turned to is the unrolling ones... And when it comes time for disc six, its time to lay it on the floor or bed and unroll the entire thing to get to the discs! Too long! But atleast it looks good!
